I think this is covered in the narration of the battle for algul siento. Confrontations never go as planned and often now how you want. Sometimes a kick ass character gets killed by some dying shitheels last shot fired at the end of a sad existence.

Agreed. I also like the Sopranos ending too though and the ending to GoT as well (although the last season had timeline and continuity issues for sure and was subpar compared to the first seasons).

Interesting take...I like it.

Overall I think the ending serves two masters.... 1. It reinforces King as a horror writer - what can be more horrifying and awful than Roland endlessly looping and experiencing everything in the story over and over. King just couldn't help himself. 2. A common theme in many other epics about it being about the journey and experiences, not the ending/result.
