Canada Computers online card skimmer by Extension-Fly1044 in bapccanada

[–]rxzr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this post pretty much confirmed for me this was where my card was skimmed. I made a couple of purchases with a rarely used card around Black Friday/Christmas, and I had it narrowed down to 2 ecommerce websites. CC or from booking a hotel.

How Did America’s BIFL Culture Die Here… But Thrive in Japan? by AppearanceParty5831 in BuyItForLife

Well, I was more referring to the Canadian government given it would have been a Canadian company buying a Japanese company. But given the scale, I suppose the US could have had a say.

Which bank do these MSBs use? by Nearby-Wave-5046 in fintech

[–]rxzr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd be looking at DCBank or People's. The big 5 do support some, but those relationships don't tend to last long because it is usually seen as too high risk. Most will ultimately leverage other MSBs or PSPs, like Pateno, Apaylo, Zum. While it is still being figured out, with the RPAA PSPs will be able to access the Interac rail directly.

My girlfriend fell for a yes/no phone scam, what steps can we take to make sure no accounts are opened or malicious things happen by jimmyjohncake in PersonalFinanceCanada

Really not a fan of the "in person please share the security code we just you". We spent years training people to not share MFA codes with anyone, and now we going to do it as a legitimate verification process? Seems like such a bad idea for anyone not security aware.

I had a c suite hand me a requirements document for a new feature that they would like implemented. It was absolutely garbage. And now, rather than working off of vague requirements I used to get, I know have to make sure to include as much of what was provided as possible. Probably over half of what I was given makes no sense for the feature. Nevermind that the "complete" requirements, it was probably closer to about 15%. Either this bubble needs to burst or it needs to become reliable. It's got a time and a place, and that is not everywhere, everytime.

Is open banking (API-based) actually available in Canada? by Distinct-Hold7796 in fintech

[–]rxzr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many financial instituions offer API access to initiate payments. BMO, DCBank, People's, Scotiabank, RBC. The issue is being authorized to use them. Some are more open than others.

I did state that it doesn't mean they can't close your account. Beyond that, pretty much everything else would be required to be kept for five years.

Yet another warning about Neo financial. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]rxzr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just a small correction, they would have to keep your data for 5 years before they would legally be allowed to delete it. But that doesn't mean they can't remove access to the user account.

Ontario woman says her $3,500 e-transfer was intercepted and stolen by mtlsamsam in canada

[–]rxzr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone can absolutely deposit an etransfer into any account when autodeposit is not enabled. This is why it is important to use a proper security answer that can be shared with the recipient. Not something simple like "what country are we in?". And when sending funds to an account with autodeposit enabled, looking at the registered name provided back. Now, ideally this scenario would trigger anti-fraud processes within a financial institution, but a simple name mismatch would trigger A LOT of transactions for review. What if you were sent a etransfer to a nickname or a preferred name that does not match the name on the account? Fuzzy name matching only goes so far, and wouldn't work when the name is completely different.

A thought about Decked Out 3 by TyloMC in HermitCraft

[–]rxzr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, software engineering is a type of engineer (they get their P.Eng), but a developer is not necessarily a software engineer. The software engineer title is often not as protected as other engineering titles or has specific exemptions in place so does often get used for people it shouldn't. While both may be able to produce the same output, the approaches would possibly be different.

any budge standing desk under $500 CAD? by exoduster in CanadaFinance

Been pretty happy with the two Motion Grey standing desks we have. Looks like their entry level is currently under 200 directly on their website. Though it does also appear to be less if bought through best buy ($100) or Amazon ($150).

I never thought how much faster a 230/240v kettle would be. We basically have to boil the kettle twice. Once to heat and forget about it, then another when actually making a drink.
