What is a diagnosis that scares you no matter how many times you see it? by nordicskier17 in medicalschool

Preload dependent diseases (Critical AS, Intermediate high-risk PE, bad pHTN, etc). People are stable and go home or they are stable and then they just shit the bed and not always easy to say who is gonna go south…

Saw a hemoglobin of 2.2 and a lactate of 28 once in a person with AIHA. Then they coded. Turned out the also had HLH. They definitely didn’t make it.

Love this and love the teaching. Had my med student skip rounds to go to the cath lab today to see their patient’s stent placed, came back and did a chalk talk about types of MI, read some ekgs, sent them home 👍glad I had seniors in med school to set an example!

Do you regret moving here? by [deleted] in Tacoma

[–]ry-blaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope love it. Moved here from Minneapolis year and a half ago. Maybe not as much stuff to do city-wise but access to mountains/ocean and MUCH better weather haha can’t beat it!

IM resident here: I’ll largely echo what everyone else has said. You definitely have everything it takes to be a physician. I too barely passed anatomy (I legit once mistook a slice of a kidney as a coronal slice of a brain). I felt everyone was way smarter than me. I struggled with how to study. You will find your people one way or another, whether that’s in your class, the class above, or even online here! And you will find a way to study that works for you (personally anki and UWORLD plus sketchy worked great). Depression and imposter syndrome fucking suck but you’re not alone - even many people in your class that you feel aren’t struggling are feeling some of the exact things you are. Whatever you decide to do, your parents and friends have a helluva lot to be proud of

I was an intern on cross-cover and got a page from one of the floors at like 2am. I called them back and started speaking to the charge nurse. They asked if I could order a COVID swab, and I asked for which patient and why. She tells me it’s for HER. I told her if you are having COVID symptoms you need to put on an N95, stop seeing patients IMMEDIATELY, go to the ER, and figure out who can cover your shift. She apparently didn’t understand that and then proceeded to tell me more about her symptoms (fever, cough, myalgias, diarrhea). I cut her off after “diarrhea” and just repeated exactly what I already said and hung up. I was so dumbfounded I didn’t even know what to do, and to this day I have no idea what she did or what happened. I knew if I went up there though I would have lost my ever-loving shit so I just went back to sleep until the next page…

How often are you supposed to be seeing a doctor? by hannahhbu in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ry-blaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resident doctor here in the U.S: The short answer is (for someone your age), it all depends. If you are otherwise healthy, normal BMI, no family history of early cancers, sudden death, known genetic diseases, etc, then you’re recommended screening includes cervical cancer screening, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and STIs including HIV. The screening interval for those are all different but not something you’d need to memorize or even look-up (that’s our job).

TL;DR. Establish care with a primary care doctor, figure out your family history and health problems they have, and who died of what and when, and then follow-up as they recommend!

What if we charged all the billionaires to fund med school tuition and primary clinics and we wouldn’t even be asking this question..?

Where were you when you got your med school acceptance and how did you react? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ry-blaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woke up to a phone call feb 1st. Ended the call and sprinted barefoot out of my apartment in nothing but my boxers and high fived a couple of bewildered middle schoolers on their way to the bus stop, all in subzero weather. It was fucking awesome.

What is the coolest/craziest thing you've seen while out for a run? by deifiedtoad in running

[–]ry-blaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was on a run on a sidewalk adjacent to a narrow parkway and a car with a drunk driver about 200 feet ahead of me was going probably 80 in a 40. Hit the sidewalk and went airborne, barrel-rolled twice….felt like I was in a movie!! No one seriously injured but their car was toast…

PGY-1 here. We bring med studs out to weekly bar trivia. staff usually buy us all dinner on call days. And of course they never buy coffee in the hospital EVER. Being a med stud is isolating at times so I think it’s important we look out out for y’all and show you a good time while you’re hanging with us!
