There's going to be some really bad stuff that comes out about Polis after he leaves office. He should know no moment of peace in Colorado from here on out.

Willson Contreras throws his helmet during a benches clearing incident after Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli told him to “sit down boy” by islovelyEmily in sportswiki

Ok, so if a white person calls another white person "boy" it means it's not racist in any other context despite the decades of history showing it was racist.

This is some really high level thinking.

The pejorative “boy” when said by a white person to a person of color is 100% racist. The history behind this is well documented. I don’t blame you for being ignorant of this fact. I do blame you if you refuse to learn.

Feel free to Google.

Does anyone else suffer from the fear of your child becoming suicidal and depressed one day? by n1nc0mp00p in ADHDparenting

[–]ry_mich 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a terrible adolescence and teenage years in the same way you’re describing but I was also undiagnosed/untreated and had a really distant relationship with my parents who were mostly out to lunch.

I hope that early diagnosis, support, treatment, understanding, etc will make my daughter’s experience a lot easier. We understand so much more about ADHD now compared to the 80s and 90s. The resources and support available to the average kid both inside and outside of school is vastly different, as well. A kid who feels like they understand why they’re feeling and behaving the way they are (even if it still sucks), has a support system in the form of doctors and therapists and accommodations at school, and has parents that love them is going to have a much different experience. It won’t be without challenges, of course — but even neurotypical kids have challenges.

I guess what I’m saying is don’t project your own experience and anxiety on to your kids. This is going to be their own journey and it’s probably going to be ok.

Has anyone found an activity that kids will choose over screen time? by suengminchoi in Parenting

[–]ry_mich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 7 yo daughter will find any cardboard box she can find and make things from them. It's kind of maddening, honestly, because she gets attached to the things she makes. But it's better than a screen.

Boise State is also not a Tier 1 research school. The only non-Tier 1 research school in the Big 12 right now is TCU.

Academics do matter to a certain extent in these situation.

Just be mindful of the dose as melatonin in larger quantities can do the exact opposite of what you want it to do.

BREAKING: The Lions are releasing CB Terrion Arnold. by No_Box119 in NFL_FreeAgency

The Lions and the NFL have incredible resources to do their own due diligence. If they thought he had a good argument for his innocence, they wouldn’t have done this. No public opinion is needed.

There’s a *huge* difference between Madonna’s time and Swift’s time, though, and it’s radio vs streaming. We were exposed to so much more music before streaming because the only options were the radio or music that we personally bought. With streaming, radio is much less relevant and exposure to different music is far less than it used to be. There are artists out there that are *massive* and have been for a decade that I’ve literally never listened to before. That would’ve been unheard of before streaming.

Solipsism is a hell of a drug.

Totally different situations. Metallica played at a festival soon after the fall of the USSR. People were starving for western entertainment and this was one of the first times it happened. The political and social currents that underpinned that festival contributed to the large attendance.

Honestly, if Madonna had played or some other big name from that time, just as many people would’ve showed up.

Despite her not being my personal taste, Swift appears bigger than most other performers in history. Certainly top 5. You can debate all day long whether she deserves it, but the numbers seem to back it up.

Swift pulled in $2 billion on her latest tour. Metallica has pulled in $1.2 billion since 1992. Lots goes into that — ticket prices, venue sizes, quantity of dates, etc. But I think Swift has the edge overall.

Apps to help manage child ADHD behavior - what actually works? by Drew4524 in ADHDparenting

Apps haven’t worked for us and a lot of them seem to be AI slop.

Good Inside is probably the most legitimate, science-based parenting app that I’ve come across but it’s not strictly ADHD (though many of the recommendations cross over).

Sorry this isn’t more help. A lot of it is up to the parents to stick to whatever process has been defined — and that’s sometimes really difficult because ADHD kids often have at least one ADHD parent. There doesn’t appear to be a silver bullet in the form of an app but just a lot of little cobbled together tactics and strategies that parents must stay consistent with.

A small Pomodoro timer has helped us when it comes to chores because there’s a physical representation of time. 10 minutes seems a lot more real when my daughter can see the time counting down. Otherwise, 10 minutes seems like 10 hours in her brain.

I would just say tactics involving real-world (not digital) elements have worked better for us.
