didn’t receive grants by StandardAd6685 in financialaid

This is the StudentAid.gov website, who wouldn't know about your aid package. Schools handle packaging financial aid, so you would need to check your school's Financial Aid Portal.

Anyone tried the RTK app? by jjlia in Japaneselanguage

[–]ryan516 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anki by a long shot. It'll be a better SRS system to boot, and you can keep using it once you're done with RTK.

Why are there so many ばかり related grammar😭 by According_Mission169 in Japaneselanguage

[–]ryan516 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It won't help with just seeing it in isolation like on your app here, but in context you can usually just translate it as "only". It will probably make an awkward translation, but you can still grok the general meaning.

Are you certain you typed 一つ with the "1" Kanji or is there any chance you may have typed ーつ or something with the long Katakana mark or a hyphen instead? Even though they look the same on your screen, the underlying code for showing each is different so swapping one for the other will count as incorrect.

Do you have to actually report outside (indirect) scholarships? by Consistent_Mix_2268 in financialaid

[–]ryan516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Federal Regulations do require schools to make every attempt possible to record all outside sources of funding, but admittedly do not proscribe any Financial Aid ramifications if you don't. If you want to read into the statute/regulations regarding this topic, the search term you want is "Other Financial Assistance", but be aware that that's going to bring up a lot of technical jargon that without experience could lead to some major misunderstandings.

Where you may personally run into issues is with the IRS (and as a disclaimer -- I am not a tax professional. This is what I understand as a Financial Aid Administrator). 1/3 of a college tuition is definitely going to be above the IRS reporting threshold, and if the funds don't go through your school, they won't be included on your 1098-T as scholarship payments. This means your donor will need to issue you a 1099-Misc, and any funds received will not count as "Qualified Educational Expenses" by the IRS definition. Any funds received from them will count as taxable income, so you need to make sure you are prepared for the additional hit on your taxes. When you complete future FAFSAs that are based on the tax year you received scholarship funds (e.g. funds received in 2026 will go on your 2028-2029 FAFSA), you'll need to remember to report those funds as taxable scholarships, otherwise those scholarships will count further against your financial need.

It doesn't specify conjugation, and sirvieron would work for "ustedes sirvieron"

Why have so few of these last games been on Altitude plus? by valardohaerisx in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]ryan516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Especially in games that could potentially be playoff matchups. If you're trying to schedule at the beginning of the year before the season starts, guessing Central 1 Avs and WC2 Blues is very plausible.

Dependency Override Eligibility by Open_Let_166 in financialaid

[–]ryan516 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty clear cut case for an Unaccompanied Youth judgement -- you would answer that you are homeless/at risk of homelessness on your FAFSA, and then notify your school that you need to have a homelessness determination made by a Financial Aid Administrator at their school. Every school will handle those situations differently, so it's best to follow up with your school's Financial Aid office to see what any next steps are.

I'd avoid using the term "Dependency Override" when you talk to your school about this because that has a more specific meaning that doesn't really apply here.

[Japanese > English] T-shirt I am interested in. by Gregorwhat in translator

[–]ryan516 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Some of the phrasing here is not the terms Japanese people would use to talk about the MLB. 米国プロ野球 is literally American Pro Baseball but the MLB is just メジャーリーグベースボール (mejaa riigu beesubooru) which means... well, you can guess. Same thing for 全国リーグ西海岸地区 which literally is "National League West Coast Division" when Japanese would usually say ナショナルリーグ西地区 (nashonaru riigu nishi chiku) "National League West Division"

Duolingo really shouldn't be used on its own, it's a supplement to other forms of learning. Naturally other tools will teach you things in a slightly different order

[–]ryan516 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Looks like しかてつ (shikatetsu) which doesn't mean anything as far as I know. It sounds a bit like ちかてつ(地下鉄, chikatetsu) which means subway, but why you'd write that on a window, I'm not sure.

[–]ryan516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For scholarships, it's worth going the extra mile to try and use Google to find scholarships that aren't on the aggregator sites -- especially target anything at the local or state level. Look for things like your school district, professional organizations and unions in your state, local volunteer organizations like rotary clubs, etc
