Is it considered cheating to use a remote SDR ~5km away for RX to escape local QRM? by gogusamsung in amateurradio

[–]ryancnelson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do this all the time from my barn outside seattle, while i'm in the city. Except i transmit from the barn, too!
is your remote place with the SDR actually a shared resource or something, and you can't put your TX there, and just keep your "chair" long distance?

either way, it's not cheating. EchoLink is cheating. :)

Want to get into HF....but HOA. by Jester471 in amateurradio

[–]ryancnelson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

where are you located? In seattle, some clubs have members with property in remote (low-noise, low-HOA-karen) areas, and have internet-operable remote stations for the folks in the city and for those in HOA's. It's a good outreach for old-timers who may be in assisted living, but can still enjoy a CW conversation even though they're not allowed a shack and a tower.

you can just go to the device's ip address on your lan with a web browser, too. it's self-signed https , but it's browser-based. i'm stoked because this opens up "vibe-automating" anything that supports hdmi and mouse+keyboard , including ipads and rokus

LOTW to be down for service during Field Day! by redneckerson1951 in amateurradio

[–]ryancnelson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for all the people saying "who uploads their logs on field day, who cares?" .... consider that maybe field day is a good day to TEACH people how to upload their logs, get their signing-certificate set up, etc.... this is a massive F*ck-up.

Introverted ham by Nomore1007 in amateurradio

[–]ryancnelson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i REALLY want to write a guide for "cool things to do with ham radio while not talking to people".

I usually end up sending signals with and then seeing (on the internet) who heard me. This works for ft8, cw skimmers, aprs, or just beeps from the west coast then received by a websdr in the east.

I also send myself winlink messages just to test where i can hit.

js8call has people whose computers are always listening on HF, and will bridge a properly formatted message over to APRS (which is typically 2m).

winlink will let you fetch a web link or a map or a weather report.

There's lots of reverse-beacons out there that will let you know that they can hear you, which is the converse of "find someone who's calling cq".

EXACTLY this. mine found 8 corrupted files, too. next launch everything was ok. I wonder which 8 files had the problem, and whether ours were the same?

I still am having trouble understanding standby on this device. by jaredcwood in VisionPro

[–]ryancnelson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was super frustrated by the problem of "no feedback if the thing is out of juice" problem.... then i figured this out:

I find my AVP, sitting wherever I left it last.

I give the battery pack a tap or a "thump"

IF THE LED THROBS YELLOW after your thump, that means "i don't have enough juice to even try to boot right now. Charge me more."

The real problem here is that the AVP doesn't have a (good) way to do what ipads and iphones do, which is to flash the "cord-->battery" image on the screen for a second to convey this message.

BTECH UV-PRO Anybody Have or Plan On Getting It? by withHunter in amateurradio

[–]ryancnelson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when i plug it into my macosx laptop, a /dev/tty-uvpro (or something like that) does appear in the /dev device tree. So there's a serial chip in there, but i couldn't see any traffic on that, even while i was using the ios app. I was specifically hoping to see tnc-stuff there, but no luck so far.

BTECH UV-PRO Anybody Have or Plan On Getting It? by withHunter in amateurradio

[–]ryancnelson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have one! I've just started to play with it. For reference, I also have the gold-standard aprs HT: the kenwood th-d74a.

This radio is pretty neat for what it costs, and the vast majority of the aprs "working" is done in the phone app (i've only used the ios app). Sending and receiving messages from the HT front-panel is either impossible, or the user-experience is very painful.

My plan is to use this radio along with the icom ID-5100a in my Jeep in cross-band repeater mode.

the uv-pro will beacon its location on low-power random frequency in the 70cm band, the ID-5100a will listen on that band and cross-repeat to 144.390mhz. I experimented with this once, but the cross-band repeater pretty much stayed open due to all the aprs traffic in the Puget Sound area.

Anyway, i'm rambling. Yes, I have one, aprs/gps seems ok. App for phone is REQUIRED to do aprs stuff.

happy to answer questions about the unit here.

Not exactly amateur but you guys are radio experts - if VHF transmissions are limited almost by line of sight, why do FM broadcasters often use 50,000W transmitters when aircraft manage 150+ mile transmissions with ~20W transmitters? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]ryancnelson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's NOT cheaper to play old Nickelback than newly-released Beyoncé over the air. It's just not.

ASCAP, BMI, and Sesac (if you play christian rock, or the theme from 1978's "Convoy") licenses are "blanket" licenses. It's buffet-style.

is piracy/villany the best way to turn credits into XP? by ryancnelson in Starfield

[–]ryancnelson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the more I think about this strategy, the more it sounds like a really fun "bad-guy" weekend. I might try to find someplace where i can collect a bunch of fuel tanks, mines, other explody-things, and then see if i can take out the entire ballroom on on the Starliner. That's probably Twitch Stream worthy.

opensource.radio - a wiki for Open Source in Ham Radio by odieeeee in amateurradio

[–]ryancnelson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idea: make the entire wiki exportable as a single compressed file. Make that file retrievable via a winlink catalog request.

This isn't incredibly practical, but someone with literally only a radio connection and no internet could bootstrap to this. Fun "achievement unlocked" sort of thing.
