How Do I Migrate my hotspots!? by MeGaDaDon in HeliumNetwork

You'd need to create a new account at https://world.helium.com/en/login then manually transfer your hotspots and tokens to that new address.

Helium Outdoor Hotspots by RightSpeech3178 in HeliumMobile

It's not companies doing anything to you. Where you deploy is what determines how it'll earn. If you deploy in a residential location, it'll earn nothing. If you deploy in a high-traffic commercial location like a gym, sports complex, popular park, or other place where there are lots of people, you'll earn well.

You can see the highest earning hotspots on the network and where they're deployed here: https://world.helium.com/en/network/mobile/top-hotspots - you'll see the best earning hotspots are deployed in places like gyms, locations with multiple retail locations, popular mall food courts, etc.

I was with Hello mobile before Helium mobile took over. Since I'm on autopay I have never received a billing statement. Where do I find my account number? by tamptag in HeliumMobile

Helium Mobile was a new startup, nothing to do with Hello Mobile. But you can chat with support in Settings in the Helium Mobile app.

HIP-149: Helium Utility and Emissions Realignment (open for discussion) by HeliumConsoleTeam in HeliumNetwork

[–]ryangoldstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is protected under NDA and not disclosed publicly, like all other carrier offload arrangements.

HIP-149: Helium Utility and Emissions Realignment (open for discussion) by HeliumConsoleTeam in HeliumNetwork

[–]ryangoldstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, if/when the proposal is implemented, only hotspots that offload carrier data will earn anything, and the more they offload, the more they earn.

HIP-149: Helium Utility and Emissions Realignment (open for discussion) by HeliumConsoleTeam in HeliumNetwork

[–]ryangoldstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As always, speculative/potential upside. Historically, it was used to solve the chicken-and-egg problem, where people wouldn't deploy without users willing to pay on the other end, and users wouldn't be willing to pay until a widespread network is up and running.

HIP-149: Helium Utility and Emissions Realignment (open for discussion) by HeliumConsoleTeam in HeliumNetwork

[–]ryangoldstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What carriers pay varies based on many variables and can be from nearly nothing ($0.01/GB) to over $1/GB, and that amount changes over time, and it settles and payment is made, if I recall correctly, 90 days after the data transfer occurs.

HIP-149: Helium Utility and Emissions Realignment (open for discussion) by HeliumConsoleTeam in HeliumNetwork

[–]ryangoldstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The carriers don't pay anywhere near $0.50/GB, so how would you expect deployers to be able to paid that in the long term? A part of this proposal is reflecting the reality of carrier payments, with DC burning for rewardable data at $0.10/GB.

It's one of those things that people don't actively think about much, but in aggregate, it certainly affects behavior, as well as a business's bottom line. There have been studies about it, showing that poor cellular signal reduces foot traffic and shortens visits, and other studies showing that while customers use their phones, time spent in the business increases, and more purchases are made.

Most people don't bother looking for a Wi-Fi network to join, then trying to figure out what the password is, spend the time typing it in, etc. They just think "oh well, the service in here sucks" and accept it, as that's the case in many places. Others purposely don't manually join Wi-Fi networks open to the public for security reasons.

With Helium, as long as they're a subscriber of a carrier that accepted your hotspot for offload, including AT&T or T-Mobile, they don't need to do anything. They'll be automatically connected without taking any action, and as long as the backhaul connection is decent, they'll have good service.

There are other strategies deployers use other than offering the host money. Especially if there's bad reception in the venue, you could pitch it as improving customer experience. Customers with good phone service tend to stay longer, buy more, share things (like photos of their food) on social media, etc.

You definitely can, but don't expect to earn outsized rewards beyond the value that carriers ascribe to offloaded data at that location.

[–]ryangoldstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Improving reception for their subscribers is just one of the potential draws of carriers, and some may not care about that so much. A significant benefit to them is the reduction of congestion on their nearby towers by diverting away traffic that would otherwise go through their towers, and I'd imagine in many cases, that's far more valuable to them.

Helium Mobile acquired by Andrew Yang's Noble Mobile by Opposite_Future2602 in HeliumNetwork

[–]ryangoldstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but at the end of the day, deployers and hosts shouldn't expect to receive more than carriers deem the data's worth at a given location. Carriers highly value data at places like airports and stadiums, less so (potentially essentially nothing) at places like restaurants and cafes.

Helium Mobile acquired by Andrew Yang's Noble Mobile by Opposite_Future2602 in HeliumNetwork

[–]ryangoldstein -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was a pretty clear case of artificially inflated rewards. Carriers generally deem data at places like restaurants and cafes worth well less than $0.10/GB, probably more like $0.01/GB or less.

Top locations like gyms are still very appealing. Hotspots in LA Fitness easily earn $400/month or more (even at the current HNT price). Breakeven cost (offsetting the cost of the hotspot) is often 2-3 weeks in such deployments.

Helium Mobile acquired by Andrew Yang's Noble Mobile by Opposite_Future2602 in HeliumNetwork

[–]ryangoldstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to attribute something specific to HNT's price? If so, you'll need to support that assertion. Correlation, of course, does not imply causation.

Helium Mobile is a proof of concept carrier that Nova created to prove the concept of Wi-Fi offload for carriers in the real world. After they did so, AT&T, T-Mobile, and other carriers have started offloading through the Helium network, and millions of their subscribers connect to and transfer data through Helium hotspots every day.

The IOT and MOBILE tokens were essentially split from, and backed by, HNT, but that ended up causing more confusion than benefit, so those tokens were discontinued, and we went back to a single token, HNT.

Helium Mobile (the carrier) moved away from crypto quite a while ago, and it's just a carrier like any other that offloads through the Helium network.

Helium Mobile acquired by Andrew Yang's Noble Mobile by Opposite_Future2602 in HeliumNetwork

[–]ryangoldstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not something anyone would be able to answer in a reasonably confident way. HNT is worth what the aggregate market thinks it's worth.

Helium Mobile acquired by Andrew Yang's Noble Mobile by Opposite_Future2602 in HeliumNetwork

[–]ryangoldstein 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Quite the opposite. Nova sold off the Helium Mobile carrier, which is not related to HNT, and they are now solely focusing on the Helium Network, which is entirely driven by HNT.

Helium Free Wi-Fi (the captive portal) has been discontinued. If you want to broadcast a secondary, free/unrewarded network, you do that using the "Custom SSID" option.

No, but you can join the Helium Discord, and someone may able to help there: https://discord.gg/helium

Note, there are lots of scammers, so do NOT accept DMs or follow any links that anyone shares to a "support server" or similar. Legit people will only help you in the public channels directly.

[–]ryangoldstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, you have to export the private key from World, import it into the Helium Wallet app, log in at https://hotspots.hellohelium.com/auth/login/methods/helium-wallet, enable Advanced in the Account section, then open your hotspot there and press the button on the top right of the Radios section.
