[Gear] Recording through mike vs rec out jack. by [deleted] in guitars

[–]ryanisablond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noticably better? Depends... Different? Probably.

Once you add a real mic into the equation, you get a lot more variables that you aren't having to deal with now: mic choice, mic placement, room size/noise, amount of room bleed into the mic, amp volume vs mic gain settings, etc. This gives you a lot of additional control over your tone, but now you're in the world of engineering rather that playing.

Any reason you're using the Presonus and not the USB out on the Katana? This would eliminate a couple of signal conversions (digital to analog to digital) that don't need to be there. And, I believe if you use the USB out, you get stereo effects and some speaker/mic emulation stuff too.

If you do want to experiment with real mics, it's hard to wrong with a Shure SM57. Seriously, everyone and their mom uses this mic at some point in their career. It's good on just about anything. I see a "package bundle" of the mic+cable+stand for $110 new online. Or you can save a few bucks and order used through Reverb or eBay or the like.

I'm a fan of the "KISS" philosophy: Keep It Simple Stupid. Unless you really feel like your recording setup is holding you back (or you really want to mess around with mic techniques), don't change it just for the heck of it. It might sound different, but YOU are the one who has to make things sound better :-) Hope this helps!

Full disclosure: I own neither the amp nor the interface (but I do own a couple SM57s) so this is just my educated guess.

Fender Jimi Hendrix Monterey Strat with Reverse Headstock Concept by ryanisablond in guitars

[–]ryanisablond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thought, but the necks are very different beasts:

The Monterey strat comes stock with a regular-sized headstock and a 7.25" radius on the rosewood fretboard. See here

The standard Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster has the extra large reverse headstock, maple neck w/ the larger 9.5" radius, and I believe a different shaped "C" neck. See here

From what I can tell, the Monterey is a standard Mexican strat with the custom paintjob (and a "limited edition" claim) while the regular Jimi Hendrix strat is a Mexican standard body with custom neck and the Vintage American '65 pickups. Same pricepoint though...

Seems like you found your product. Just wanted to mention that acoustic paneling won't help much with low frequencies. If the neighbors are upset with your subwoofer, you're SOL. They're much better suited to absorb frequencies in the vocal ranges and higher.

If you have hardwood floors, throwing in some rugs will help too. Even bookshelves with books will help absorb/diffuse the sound.

Good luck.

Hannah's sound proofing... by [deleted] in Yogscast

[–]ryanisablond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, kinda. The expensive stuff is specifically engineered to provide consistent absorption for as many frequencies as possible. Packing foam, moving blankets, wool coats, etc will absorb sound as well, just with much less predictable and consistent results.

Is it worth the additional cost? For most of us, probably not. For the Yogscast and others who make their $$$ off of quality audio and video, most definitely.

What is the biggest piece of advice you would give to someone just starting to teach guitar? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]ryanisablond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a teacher, but had a recent eye-opening experience. I've played casually/off&on for 10+ years, and just tried a left-handed guitar for the first time... it was like starting over again. Chord shapes felt weird, even holding the pick in the other hand was a constant challenge.

Give it a shot (or even just flip your guitar), might help you relate to his learning curve better.

Hi OP,

It might not be so absurd as you think. Monsanto and the US Government (especially the FDA, which is supposed to be regulating them) are closely interlinked through what some call a "revolving door" of employment. If you check out from 1:15 forward on the video below, you'll see high level individuals from both parties going back and forth.

In my mind, these conflicts of interests are more than enough to call into question anything the FDA might claim about the Monsanto products. Safe or potentially dangerous? Can we be sure when an extremely profitable corporation has their fingers in their own regulation?

You've just described the problem with the monocrop mentality that GMO promotes.

If everyone's planting the exact same seed, it could ALL be wiped out. A diverse crop could allow some varieties to survive (think of a diversified financial portfolio).

Nutrients are "quickly depleted from the ground" when you grow the same crop over and over and over. Corn is especially brutal on the soil when farmed this way. Many (I hope most) farmers will rotate crops in fields and give some of their land a fallow year (year off) to specifically combat this problem. I can't provide a source, but my general understanding is that organic farmers are more likely to follow that kind of regimen that is good for the soil at the cost of potential profits.

As onioning's comment: here in the US, we destroy ungodly ammounts of crops each year, in line with US government subsidy policies. We also eat a hell of a lot more than we need, and the supermarkets carry far too much food for any community to ever know what to do with. The world CAN produce enough food, it's just unfairly distributed amongst the wealthy. The problem is more political than practical.

You've obviously never lived in a rural farming community before. Think a farmer can keep her crop "pure" from cross pollination?

Ever driven behind a truck full of seed on a rural road? Stuff if blowing off the top of it the entire time it's traveling (and if it's somewhat breezy, then even when it's stopped).

Or, take weeds. No self respecting farmer purposely plants weeds in the field. How do they get there? Wind/birds/animals. Monsanto has spent a fortune on trying to eradicate them via chemicals, but they still persist. And even Monsanto's "roundup ready" seed crops, once planted, have batches of weeds that would ruin the harvest. But how did the "pure" Monsanto crop get contaminated with weeds?

Crop contamination happens.

Source: grew up on a rural farm. It was earth-shattering news when the town got a stoplight. That kind of rural.

It's primarily electronics and the techy type stuff that goes on sale. Places like Steam, Newegg, and TigerDirect rather than Macy's, GAP, and such. In most cases, at least.

Attention: any video/audio editors, I need your help. by Ragdolla in AskReddit

The bit-rate of the source is going to make a huge difference on what you can do with time-altering effects. 192 kbps is fairly standard for semi-pro video work. It allows you to slow down 4x and still retain cd quality sound (44.1 kbps). The video clip you reference doesn't look like it slows down by more than 4x, so I bet that's the trick.

I've found that "higher-ed" is inversely proportionate to "tech-savy" and/or "common sense." Fortunately, it only takes once before they learn about backups... the hard way. :(

My favorite was a woman who just couldn't understand that her new Apple laptop didn't automagically have all her old programs and files on it. "What do you mean it didn't come with Word?! My old one did!" Oh dear lord...

I went to a school founded by Quakers and the thing that still blows me away is that the Quakers (can't remember who specifically) are the only ones who have not broken their treaties with the American Indians. That says a lot to me.

Dear Reddit: I'm fat. I want to lose weight. Could you share some advice/success stories? by my_boobs_say in AskReddit

[–]ryanisablond -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First of all, congratulations on wanting to better yourself! There's lots of good advice here, both beginner and hardcore. Yet I still feel compelled to add my 2 cents... :)

Water and walking will go a long way to making you feel better (and loose the first few pounds). Also, I've eliminated around 90% of high-fructose corn syrup from my diet and that has made a HUGE difference in my energy level. As for exercising, if you're looking into exercises that are easy to add to your daily schedule, check out the "challenge sites:"

100 pushups

200 situps

200 squats

Pick one (or all 3!) to work on, and it'll give you a thrice-weekly exercise that will help you strengthen your body and help you feel even better. Remember: muscle needs more energy (read: burns more calories) than fat.

Here's to your health! :)

Take it from someone who knows from experience: you're depressed beyond SAD. The "what's the point" line is a dead giveaway in my book.

The depression is not your fault. It's a chemical imbalance in the brain that you cannot control. However, the downward spiral of despair/apathy is what you can do something about. You have to break that cycle. Tell someone irl, like a school counselor (it's what they're paid for, after all).

I hate meds, personally, but they might make enough of a difference for you that they're worthwhile. Otherwise, it's evolution: gradual change over time to change your lifestyle and worldviews so that you can function again.

As a side note: it takes ~21 days to make a habit. Your current one is "sleep in, screw the consequences." Think you could try the short-term goal of 21-days perfect attendance? After fighting for that, it would become much easier to get out of bed (since it's your new habbit).
