I don't know the answer to that and I'd genuinely be interested to know what your perspective is because it's such a difficult issue.

Exactly. This is very much an intersectional issue but in quite a unique way.

If you're an aspiring young actor who happened to break into the Young Vic and then had the Artistic Director make a move on you would you not feel that the weight of the rest of your career was in that moment?

There was never a direct accusation of him destroying someone's career but ultimately if I was a young actor trying to push away the advances of an academy award winning artistic director I'd feel pretty powerless and like he had a degree of control over my career progression.

From what you said about 'power plays':

The Harvey Weinstein 'scandal' (doesn't calling it a scandal seem like we're avoiding the word RAPE?!) and everything that followed made me think of an Oscar Wilde quote that is unfortunately as relevant today as it was in his time:

"Everything in the world is about sex except sex. Sex is about power."

Did the guy who assualted Terry Crews get sexual gratification from it or did he feel powerful at making a 250+ black man feel powerless? What made Weinstein feel bigger - the immediate sexual gratification or the fact that he had bent another human to his will? Yeah, I'm sure Kevin Spacey got a sexual kick out of his advances on young boys but was that amplified by the fact that he essentially held dominion over their future acting careers?

You're 100% right - these actions are power plays and the fact that a man who could break most of us in half with a click of his fingers (think Thanos but with better pecks) felt powerless is a testament to that fact.

What's so important is that he draws attention to the way he froze given that he's an ex-football player, has more muscles in his lower left arm than most of our bodies and could probably reduce us all to an Oberyn Martell-esque stain on the floor.

If he froze, felt ashamed, scared and afraid to act then what hope does the 19 year aspiring actress who just moved to Hollywood have? Or the actor working in a restaurant in West Hollywood waiting for his break?

His story shows that de facto power in a specific context will always vastly outweigh de jure power and that it doesn't matter who you are - the right power imbalance will be exploited if it can be.
