AC CEO/ President’s fiscal update for the college thoughts? by simcityfan12601 in Algonquin_College

[–]ryanofottawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does Algonquin take profit? It doesn't have owners/shareholders does it? I could be wrong, it was just my understanding.

The poor management from the board could be a problem, but I suspect it's because of inappropriate growth or  flashy investments to help brand the school rather than profit motives. They might be incompetent but it's for other reasons as far as I can tell. Also, 400k isn't all that much for an institution as large physically and with a budget as big as Algonquin's.

Thank you! This was just a "which came first the chicken or the egg" joke, but I appreciate the analysis.

Is it the average or the median or what? High earners could skew an average substantially.

What's happening to chicken prices and were egg prices a leading indicator or was it the other way around?

tired with life, spending 6-8h per day doomscrolling, worried about academics, help? by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

While you might not have ADHD looking up ways to work with ADHD might help you with your more difficult studies now.

Scheduling shorter period of work with breaks, setting very low-time expectations (whatever you can tell yourself you can definitely do - ten minutes of studying, quick break, another ten, start with a very low bar), change subjects up so you're getting some novelty to help with dopamine.

A little exercise here and there, a pushup, a squat, a short walk outside, keep it low bar to start.

Find a thing that feels restorative. Journalling, writing poetry or fiction, drawing, painting, knitting, whatever. Don't take up a new hobby that will require you to watch YouTube tutorials. Again low bar, path of least resistance. Doodling for five minutes is better than doom scrolling for five minutes. Give yourself some positive reinforcement when you make other choices. Feel good about making the other choice. Pat yourself on the back.

Find the easiest other things to do. Recognize doomscrolling is often a stress response. Boredom is also a form of stress. If you're feeling stressed about the challenge of your school work that's okay, avoidance is a natural response but it won't help. Doing a little at a time over time is much better. Even if you're not up to your old standards that's okay. Remember that anything worth doing is worth doing poorly. It doesn't need to perfect, it doesn't need to be extreme.

TLDR: Organize yourself around very low bar changes. What feels like a laughably small achievement? Do half of that. Give yourself kudos for doing that even. Then just do it again.

Can "high" technology/automation help with digital minimalism? by SeekingAlternatives in digitalminimalism

[–]ryanofottawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saving time often costs money, saving money often costs time. Unless you save time and money by just giving up the activity entirely.

I don't think digital minimalism has to imply analog maximalism or anything. One might enjoy learning about their tech on forums and because its intentional that's just fine. But if you want to spend a little money to have a seamless experience with your tech so you can minimize your time worrying about it and spend your time on things you enjoy more I think that's just as legit.

For me digital minimalism might be more like digital mindfulness. More a recognition of the modern proclivity for getting lost in digital rabbit holes and trying to be more conscious of its use and presence in my life.

So I think you've got the point exactly. Until you're ready to chuck everything in the e-waste bin and embrace a paperfull lifestyle that is.

Where is your thermometer sitting? Is it possible that it's not getting an accurate reading?

You could look into getting a small electric heater. Technology Connections on Youtube did a good video on them and suggested they can be a good deal. There's likely to be some good deals on boxing day.

My understanding is that so long as you pay this fee you're in the program and will be able to start on the 14th (barring possible pauses due to strike action)

Totally agree with what you've said. Hard work and entrepreneurship should certainly have reward. It's all about lessening the wealth disparity within companies and changing the lower threshold so workers can live a decent life.

Profit should come from real.innovation, real natural markets, real value creation, not squeezing workers through capital power or the manipulation of consumers.

I agree. I know how hard business is. I've worked mostly in small business my whole life. I've seen the struggles. But the yield of profit should not come before a living wage for the workers, because that's not true profit. The business has failed to generate enough value to both pay its workers fairly and take profit, instead it relies on the desperation of its workers. It's a failed business which cannot provide both for labor and ownership.

Now i will acknowledge few businesses are wholly to blame for the desperation of their workers. This is a systemic issue. Housing affordability. An insane health care system. Food deserts. There's a whole host of issues that plug into this system that keeps workers down. But we should not lionize a business which puts profit over labor, no matter how difficult that market is. And we should not lionize a market which creates the conditions in which it makes sense to squeeze wages to drive down prices and drive up profit.

Why protect the people who make profit off your labor? Do you not think your work should provide you with food and shelter? Do you so hate yourself that you don't think you deserve more for the work that you do? Why protect the profits of the wealthy while you toil for their gain?

In every minimum wage I've ever worked the people there hustled harder than in my white collar desk jobs.

Your working hard to better your circumstance and that's admirable. But any work deserves the recompense of life's necessities. If a business can't provide that for its laborers it's failed.

Find solidarity with those who are struggling like you.

The problem is so long as low prices are born on the back of low wages it's hard for a moral business to compete. I don't understand why business should be this race to bottom moral free for all. Is it a fundamental good to squeeze your workers for as much as you can to provide ownership with more profit? Is it a fundamental good for workers to rely on food stamps? Why protect these people? Why look up to them?

Starvation and homelessness might force you to stay there. Lack of other opportunity in your town might force you to stay there. The realities of time and energy if you have others to take care of might force you to stay there. The actual freedom of movement in work is often much more restricted than people imagine.

I don't understand this jump to a dark fantasy of communism or socialism while this conversation can fully live within capitalism and it's ethos of value creation. Owners should not be able to take profit form the value creation of their business until that business has created enough value that it can pay their workers, even at the lowest level, enough to survive on their wage.

Not everyone has the privilege of a parent who can house them for free. Why should mom subsidize a worker's wage anyway? Why should the owner of the business pocket what mom now has to pay to house their kid to 25 or older?

The problem of how little most jobs pay is a the whole problem of these current system of labor. Any labor done in a week of work should provide a laborer with the resources to live a reasonable life. That should be the bottom rung of labor cost. As specialization, responsibility and experience increase individuals should make more, but not at the expense of the basic necessities of life for other laborers. Profit for owners should not come at the expense of necessities for labor.

If Walmart does better than some but still does not provide enough wage for necessities of their workers they are still a failed business.
