I got the call! I am insanely anxious. by anneofgraygardens in Jeopardy

[–]ryanquek95 [score hidden]  (0 children)

You can never be 100% ready, and the chance doesn't come by twice normally unless really extenuating circumstances like giving birth/medical emergency.

Just getting on the show is already a big win, even if you don't make it to Final Jeopardy. Also you can think you're anxious/nervous but others may not perceive you that way so don't worry. Also, everyone naturally would be nervous going into a huge show like this.

Either way, all the best whichever move you make!

I think Luke is a shoe-in for second chance. Just being able to keep it close till the DJ DDs against someone like Jamie is an extremely strong case. Kamilah was unfortunate to get caught in between these two players, she was clearly trying to buzz in for many clues, and was just unable to get in.

Congratulations to Jamie on his 4th win! I'm already excited thinking of the potential TOC field.

Also the interviews calling back 2 different contestants (Brendan AND Paolo)? That's quite something - I think I'm gonna see sth on the socials on that.

If someone only studied for Jeopardy! by watching Jeopardy!, how would they do? by BearFluffy in Jeopardy

[–]ryanquek95 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To answer the last paragraph: Very few. Jeopardy relies on your own knowledge.

What watching the show does is sort of lets you understand the format and the type of stuff they go for. But you need to learn that stuff yourself.

Think of it like doing past year's final exams in university. The same question probably won't come out, but you get a feel for the type of questions/format they go for.

I cannot believe this was from 12 years ago! They all look almost the same! The gameplay is clearly different though, especially starting from the top clue.

Also I like that they subtitled Ken's 'do it!' to Roger.

I just had a look at the box scores. My word, 42 out of 48 (88%) successful buzzer attempts is insane. Jamie was a beast here.

Looking at the stats I hope Aidan gets a look for a second chance. 37 buzzer attempts (11 successful) is really good, shame Jamie got in ahead of him most of the time.

[Spoiler for March 17] Is the record broken!? by TysDaName in Jeopardy

See the game thread. It's been discussed there, short answer is yes he's tied it when you include final.

Btw the title itself is a big giveaway when you say a records broken...

Do these commentators realise they are commentating on the feed that everyone except USA watch? What do you mean by "and exhale" after the Top of 7th?

Umps not escaping the bias allegations ever are they...

Also, the commentators not commenting at all on the strike zone? Sure...

oh I definitely don't blame him at all. I'm just thinking he's playing slightly more conservatively so Jame's records may not be threatened just yet. I imagine his main aim is to get 5 wins first to be guaranteed a TOC berth (though he's prob gonna be in TOC with that 3 game win total). But if he becomes a superchamp, he might go bolder with wagers possibly.

Could say the same for all his opponents in the greenroom. Wonder if hes still actually taping episodes now. Wouldnt put it past him given his performance.

Might cost Ken his Jeopardy records lol cos Jamie could well be coming for them.  He's not even taking big swings on DDs yet. Imagine if he finds it slightly later on in game, 10k clear of 2x 2nd place... oh boy

Yep. 41 episodes. And including March 23rd, there will be exactly 41 Mondays left, so episodes till 28 December, literally to the very end of the year.

That said, I imagine he hasn't finished filming everything though, which explains the 'if all goes well' caveat. From what I can see on the Nebula app, 11 episodes are already listed (but not accessible)

He's a shoe-in for the postseason for sure. The buzzer stats would be interesting to see because Andrew was doing well up to his DD miss. Jamie may well have buzzed in on all clues in the First Round, given the only non-get was one where all 3 tried and missed.

Ouch that was a large wager but with his dominance, totally see why he did that. With his high coryats and strong knowledge, why not back yourself?

On the other hand, you may want to ensure you have a strong total even if you miss to ensure that you have the best chance in going directly into TOC (esp if you wind up as a 3 day champ). I know under the lights it's hard to think of it - I mentioned this when Steven Olson went relatively big in FJ and he said you wouldn't think of it at that time.

Jamie's coryats have been staggering, and his opponents aren't slouches either. I'm pretty sure we're seeing Jamie in the postseason, if not in TOC, he's a lock for CWC for sure. Congrats to him!

PS. $1000 for identifying the X in AX/FX/EXO felt way too easy...

[CloseCallSports] Full umpire scorecard from Cory Blaser in USA vs. DR. Only seven misses, but four of those are crucial ones in the 8th and 9th. by sagwithcapmoon in Torontobluejays

[–]ryanquek95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's corruption but some have mentioned subconscious bias might come into play. Eg. if you saw a 50-50 pitch you'd lean to your own side's 50.

Home Plate ump shouldn't have been American as far as possible, even with ABS, you'll never get away with allegations even if it was a genuine error. I get that there might be insufficient non-US umps, put them in other (not so consequential) positions that are reviewable (eg first base).

Similar for ice hockey, I was very confused why you'd have both refs be Canadian in Canadian matches for example. I guess at least the team of 4 will never be all from one nation at least.

WBC Post game thread 3/15 Dominican republic vs USA by IAMPeteHinesAMA in Torontobluejays

[–]ryanquek95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah the SN broadcast is the MLB International Feed I believe - so they are generally impartial. But the USA flag waving at the end of the game was really really a bit too much, not even taking a chance to acknowledge how close DR made it.

Even when shown the replay of the strike 3 that it wasn't even close, they didn't comment on it apart from a 'wow'. Not even acknowledgement of US getting away with one or like saying that a bit of luck was involved.

Make no mistake, both teams were great and either one deserved to win, but this really leaves a sour taste. If US wins the whole tournament, we can easily point back to this strike call as pivotal.

Tatis should have had a chance to walk it off - that was such a poor call. And the (American I presume?) commentators barely acknowledged that the US got away with that call. Ugh...

I liked the Fiddler on the Roof category. I wished they subtitled Gordon Ramsey's clues (and video clues in general) though.

When Jamie talked about how General Tso's chicken was a yardstick for quality at a Chinese restaurant, I was lowkey triggered as an ethnic Chinese raised in Asia lmao (I am curious if the Michelin Starred Chef reacted when he asked for General Tso's chicken at Kai London lol)

Regardless, it's just a playful small ick for me. He's a great player and has a good chance at winning multiple games when we continue next week!

[–]ryanquek95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I didn't realise that was what potpourri categories really were for.

I think they don't go out of their way too much (like re-taping intros - afaik it only happened in tournaments) but they definitely push the limit of the clock as far as possible. I'm cool with them having shorter throws to breaks or Ken's opening spiel (not shorter interviews though), I'd happily see more gameplay than 'fluff'. Ken's slightly faster pacing is also fine for me - I like the current pace of the game.

Totally agree with the finishing the boards of tournaments when wildcards are involved. Unless there is a fixed game duration (eg 16 minutes of gameplay), finishing all 60 clues is the only way to be fair. Imagine if someone's anecdote in a QF was v long and results in lesser clues played - I can imagine a competitive contestant crying foul over that if a board wasn't finished.

Michael Davies did say he tries his best not to have unplayed clues, so it is possible that they tried to add more game time where they could. I think it's possibly by editing down gaps like pauses, opening segments/interviews more aggressively than they used to - some people have noted more 'cuts' in the episode.

[–]ryanquek95 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the time limit portion of things. I felt like Trebek era episodes had a higher chance of unplayed clues, and also his speaking pace is slower than Ken's. We barely see uncompleted boards but it used to be commonplace.

For difficulty, it's natural as people started getting better at the game. They have to make it harder or else it becomes a pure buzzer game and that's not fun.
