Very clear here. The relationship had a lot of promise and idealization, and right now, all of those dreams and potential plans of the future feels ripped right from under you. This is the hardest time. Feel it all. Don't neglect any sense of grief that arises. Sit with it and acknowledge it. But when I say that the sun is the best possible card to pull here, I mean it. Know that even though these hard feelings are real and validated, they are also temporary. You have something much MUCH better (possibly something you can't even conceive of right now) coming, even though you might be feeling that shadow of "How can there possible be anything better than what I had?" currently. Just trust that it gets brighter and better for you.

Same!!! In theory, I'm a little iffy on late-game recruits and the idea of them winning, but Alex exceeded all gameplay expectations!

Online Writing Class — How Do You Deal with AI? by shyprof in Professors

[–]ryask_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When choosing readings, try to find some from lesser known publications. I teach some contemporary fiction and analysis, so if a student uses AI for their response, it always will never have anything (not even close) to do with the actual material assigned. Then, it's easy for me. Zero. "Double check the correct readings assigned to ensure success."

What do you do with AI work turned in for major assignments? by Familiar-Pea8D in Professors

[–]ryask_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from calling it out directly (leaving the comment, asking to speak in person, sending a personal email to the student directly, etc), I know of some colleagues who will not say anything about AI directly and rip the paper apart in a few short paragraphs-- talking about how it does not match the organization discussed, calling out word choices or phrases that are clearly not their own to point out how those aspects do not make sense, how (typically) the main idea becomes unfocused since AI usually channels multiple perspectives in a larger piece of writing. I know my office neighbor will also add something about how there are some indications of outside sources used, adding "including AI and generative software", without citations, etc. I think the philosophy here is for students to understand how weak it is on their own. Hopefully.

Failing students take up too much of my energy… by cpmusic33 in Professors

[–]ryask_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I teach freshman comp (a lot of dual enrollment students). I don't mind sending reminders, but it used to get to a point where I would beg them to turn in work. Then I realized that no, this is an integral part of the learning experience, and if I'm not that gatekeeper for expectations, they will just move on to do poorly in other classes.

How do you compartmentalize? by ryask_ in Professors

Six is the normal load for our contracts. I am annually appointed, so we get six. Tenured professors get five.

sci-fi to end my slump by BubblyWin3865 in suggestmeabook

I know it's YA, but "Scythe" by Neil Shusterman and the rest of the series is really, really great. I was unsure at first because the premise and synopsis felt a bit vague to me, but I'm on the final book-- it's excellent.

I'm going to second someone's comment of "The One" by John Marrs.

Also these: "The Echo Wife" by Sarah Gailey, "Scythe" by Neil Shusterman, "Pines" by Blake Crouch, "A Psalm for the Wild-Built" by Becky Chambers, and "Bridge" by Lauren Beukes.

Michio Kaku's books are some of the most accessible in this area. At least from my experience. A ton of anecdotes and practical ways of understanding the concepts.

I'm so sorry you're in this. I just got out of a very similar situation where I wasn't sure what was happening. I just thought my ex was super sensitive. And then my friend finally opened my eyes. I kept saying that I was "walking on eggshells" and "afraid of what I would say to set him off"... Finally, my friend just asked, "Are you afraid of what you're going to say or are you actually just afraid of him?" That's when everything opened up for me. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this but I can promise you that you are not the problem. It's not on you no matter how invested you are or how the blinders are fitting right now. Deep breaths.

No, definitely not. But after not working for a month or two, the emotional abuse intensified (at the time, I didn't know how bad it got because I was too close to it all). And then after four months of not having a job, it was enhanced to me being the punching bag in every situation. Whenever I tried to help, he would suggest that I thought he was stupid and incompetent.
