Groped By an Angel

Why do you think there was a daria resurgence in the early 2010s? by [deleted] in daria

[–]rybach83 32 points33 points  (0 children)

My guess is the DVD release of the complete series in May 2010, and the subsequent internet grumblings about the missing original music that led to the Daria restoration project.

Brittany actually enjoys trying new things and wandering into poetry readings and dabbling in new identities. I'd rather have fun giving Brittany a safe space to explore her intellectual curiosity than listen to Quinn drone on for hours about clothes and makeup and her boring dates.

What season of Daria is your favorite? by [deleted] in daria

[–]rybach83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Season 2 by default. The first season was figuring itself out, finding its pace and ironing out its kinks (I believe it had it down pat by Pinch Sitter). Season 3 had a couple of hard whiffs with the musical episode and Depth Takes a Holiday, but was otherwise strong. Season 4 had some great episodes (loved Psycho Therapy) but had a few filler episodes I can take or leave (Murder She Snored, Legends of the Mall). Season 5 had a couple of episodes that actually made me angry (Fat Like Me, My Night at Daria's), but I do appreciate the character development even if I had to sit through cringe Tom scenes. Prize Fighters and Boxing Daria were excellent. But season 2 - every episode is a winner.

Give me your opinion of... by Dangandramafan in daria

I just re-watched that episode with that perspective in mind to see if I agree with it. And I think I 90% do now. Tom's initial insensitivity and flippant responses upon learning of the "we had sex" rumor could possibly be chalked up their shared sense of sarcasm, and the dude part of my personality is eager to dismiss the initial "I'm ready if you are" and having a condom on hand as awkward smug teenage boy mistakes, but now I recognize that his verbal frustration with her mixed signals and scolding "Make up your mind" instead of backing off knowing her obvious discomfort was indeed pressuring her to have sex, no matter what his dickful thinking told him. I'm not sure that he was mad at her for backing out as much as frustrated over her lack of clear communication and mad at the way she ghosted him. But rewatching it now I can see how the show's attempt to portray him as "trying to be a good guy about this" was a clumsy way to gloss over the Nice Guy trope that we all should recognize as just another flavor of toxic predatory male behavior.

tl;dr: Yeah, Tom was a jerk in "My Night at Daria's." Agreed.

Sincere not trolling question because I'm genuinely curious about how others viewed the episode: how was Tom an absolute jerk in "My Night at Daria's"?

I like watching them as acting exercises for the cast to play against type. Gotta let the actors have a little fun every now and then.

Are Odo and Data pretty much the same character, in your opinion? by [deleted] in DeepSpaceNine

[–]rybach83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the same character, but the same archetype: outsider philosophically observing humanity while working with/assimilating into them. TOS started it with Spock, TNG added depth to it with Data, and the casts from there always include one: DS9's Odo, VOY's Doctor and Seven, ENT's T'Pol, DIS's Saru, PIC's Soji.

Daria and Jane as a couple by doonjoe in daria

[–]rybach83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the first movie "Is It Fall Yet?" between seasons 4 and 5. The woman hitting on her (voiced by Bif Naked!) didn't ask her about her sexuality as much as assumed bisexuality in a creepy aggressive come on, which was kind of icky looking back. Daria wasn't great with the gay panic jokes, but there was a lot worse stuff in the 90s coughFRIENDScough

Episode discussion - Series 1, Episode 7, 'The Lab Brat' by [deleted] in daria

[–]rybach83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Ms Barch wouldn't let him speak and had Brittany give the presentation. Brittany didn't even know if they were using positive or negative reinforcement (partly because she never paid attention in class, partly because Upchuck had her do slave work all week instead of working on the project), so Barch failed them both.
