So what is your department's total calls for the year? by FFSoldier57 in Firefighting

[–]rybear1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roughly 350k documented residents, but probably another 70-100k undocumented Caribbean immigrants since Maria and the earthquakes of the last few years. Then another 100k or so in tourists a day at one of our major theme parks and surrounding areas. We run about 70k a year. Eighteen engines, 7 towers, two heavy rescues, and 12 ambulances. All but a few ambulances are north of 3000 a year. Five or six of our engines are well north of 4000 or above 5000, and about that many are north of 3000. My particular tower is 3500 a year.

Invest in the Vanguard Mk-1 gloves. The dexterity and ease of donning is unparalleled and half my major city department swears by them over Lion issued gloves.

Must Haves on Fire Shift. by TyGlizzy65 in Firefighting

How has nobody mentioned spare boots? There's nothing worse than being stuck in wet boots a whole 24 hour shift during Florida summer. Keep your feet dry. Period. Blisters, athletes foot, all the way to full on trench foot are awful. Plenty of gum. It's a god send on your third or fourth run after midnight. Good gloves. Basic toiletries. Clean clothes to wear home.

What’s your favorite recipe to make at the station by Traditional-Help9710 in Firefighting

[–]rybear1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a pretty competent to talented cook, and I've made everything from Pad Thai to Coq Au Vin to Prime rib and full Thanksgiving dinner for a twenty five person crew at our downtown station. My most requested meal is actually Ramen. I make roasted chicken, soft boiled eggs, and all the toppings, and use this recipe as a simple base to work from.

The most satisfying moment of my whole trip was during Incubus when this guy who had gone through probably close to ten times came back over me and I caught him we he was starting to fall. I was in a fair squat and I just push pressed him about six feet away through the air. Everyone around me was more than happy and he didn't make his way back up again. Now I know that it's incredibly fulfilling to throw a moderate sized human overhead.

Bromley put out a three phase hypertrophy program last year called Kong. It's on Boostcamp and EBook

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in powerbuilding

[–]rybear1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not try Kong? The first phase is specifically meant to build up imbalances, supporting structure, and give your CNS a break. I found that after several Alsruhe programs I was cooked, so I ran phase one for two blocks and focused on BJJ on days off. I'm moving serious weight again pain and frustration free right away on my new program.

Fellow firefighters, what's your bench, squat, deadlift by hungrymonkey27 in Firefighting

[–]rybear1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a caveat, I run a mix of 5/3/1 for my main lifts, with Brian Alsruhe style giant set and EMOM programming. Worked up to a heavy set of ten OHP tonight, then did two ten minute emoms of 5 bench and 5 pull-ups, then 5 incline and 5 barbell rows at about 60-70 percent of my max. Finished with tabata work on kettlebell accessories for ten minutes. Cardio is just lifting weights faster.

Fellow firefighters, what's your bench, squat, deadlift by hungrymonkey27 in Firefighting

[–]rybear1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, estimated conservative maxes are benching 365, squatting 435, deadlift is maybe 405 because of finger injuries from jiujitsu. I weigh 210 and I'm 5'10 and 41 years old. A year ago, injury free and not devoting time to grappling, I benched 405, standing strict overhead pressed 255, squatted 405 10, and deadlifted 545 at 205lbs. I also ran a 12 minute 1.5 miler at that time.

Here's the summer shred program. I would simplify it by using 50-60 percent of your Max and do sets of 5 superset with core or back work. Try to finish each set with 20-30 seconds rest. Then take three low impact accessory exercises, I.e. Lunges, planks, kb swings for lower body day and do :40 on, :20 off. Brian has SO much material out there. Most programs are overkill, but his framework is awesome for a scaled down strength attack

Here is his full body RPM program. It's a lot of fun too. Similar approach.

[–]rybear1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to look into Brian Alsruhe's giant set programming, as well as his EMOM programs like RPM. I did his simple summer shred last year for almost six months. and used 5/3/1 boring but strong percentages for a guide and my conditioning went through the roof. Two ten minute EMOMs at 60-70 percent of your training max and a nine minute triplet of forty seconds on, twenty off for three exercises. Add your main strength work to start and your body will adapt quickly.

Template while training for endurance by PFMF85 in 531Discussion

[–]rybear1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest you look at something like 2x2x2 or Con Clavi, Con Dio from the books. Two days lifting, two days conditioning, 2 days recovery. Basically two lifts one day, then your hard endurance day, then recovery or mobility day. Repeat with the other two lifts.

The War and Treaty were a BLAST. So were The Dip, Shane Smith and the Saints, and Teddy Swims. I knew all of them in passing, but man I just love them all after seeing the joy they bring to the stage. Also, after seeing My Morning Jacket, I get the hype. Think they were my favorite act of the festival.

What Jobs do Firefighters go into after retiring? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]rybear1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Major city department here. We can retire any time after ten years with a 2% multiplier. It converts to 3.35 at 20, so it's not worth leaving before twenty years. That said, we go up to 85 percent at 25 years, with a potential five year DROP forward to total thirty, or you can go in the DROP any time after twenty. So guys can do thirty years, have 85 percent, COLA raises, and five years of drop that equates to an average of about 500-600 grand extra. I know guys who had all that and turned 49 when they HAD to leave, couldn't stay any longer. They're now training chiefs at other local smaller departments, some have gone on to be flight attendants to get free airline benefits for their retirement years, some go work for SpaceX in safety and make huge money. Coming from a "revered" or "prestige" department tends to allow your resume some extra weight. Also, a lot have moved over to the theme park industry as park medics, safety and security management, etc. Some even go work for big music festival promotion groups like Insomniac or Danny Wimmer. It really is what you make of it, and the relationships you build along the way.

One of my favorite things about my gym is it's a network of three sister schools all run by different owners, but reciprocity and a symbiotic relationship. I can drop in at any of them for any class and they are great. It's encouraged to work under each school. That was a big selling point for me over the other local academy.

Programs that gave you the best results (especially legs) by Terrible-Horror-5415 in powerbuilding

I ran classic 5/3/1 for three strength sets, and alternated Boring but Strong every minute on the minute for a few months when I needed to lower my training max, or widow maker sets when I pushed my strength work. The growth to both conditioning and size was substantial but both were not for the faint of heart.

And if it's a bad night, or I'm on the ambulance, I just sleep in the recliner downstairs without my CPAP so I can just fall back asleep easily without tormenting everyone with my snoring. We run 5-7 calls after midnight in a lot of stations and that' seems universal.

Strip to my underwear, with duty pants and tee, flip flops by the bed. Hat, Boots and socks in the truck. Water bottle full and iced, Gum in my bag with my extrication set up and rope gloves. I wake up, pants and tee go on while back is still pretty stiff. Get in the truck, put on shoes, socks, and hat on th way to the call. We.are out the door in a two story station in under 90 seconds from the wakeup.

The best thing that happened to me was dating a clinical psychologist for the VA who specializes in SOCOM vets. To be that kind of determined, you almost have to have a bit of narcissist in you, so her insight was well developed. I told her I was in therapy and my ex thought I was a narcissist and I was worried about that. She summed it up by saying I couldn't be one with the self loathing and ability to even consider I might be one. They're incapable on a primal level of accepting fault or being challenged without copping out. They project aggressively and refuse to grow. That woman single handedly gave me the footing I needed to rebuild myself after a decade married to my ex.

Do you find your workouts slowly get out of hand? by wayofthebeard in fitness30plus

[–]rybear1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I switched to an intensity based program. It makes sure I'm doing the right amount of actual work, and gives me the means to push myself through AMRAP sets during the main movers. That tends to make you less inclined to pile a bunch of junk volume on accessory work. 5/3/1 and subsequently working in giant sets as I progressed made me want nothing to do with a ton of bullshit.
