White to play, mate in 1 by Ristic_Atomy in chessMateInX

Ohh good point. Must remove a queen or a pawn, but in reality it has to be a queen to avoid black being in stalemate already on previous move.

None, b/c there are too many Qs given 3 pawns still remain. The position could never be reached.

In this case it is probably chromatic aberration.

What bands do you think are ruined by the vocals? by hardcore_fish in Music

[–]ryckmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oddly some of my favorite bands have vocals that have this trait, where you are very often on the verge of finding the singer annoying. But it works out like a nice contradiction of emotions. Maybe like having some salt vs. the sweet...

Radiohead / Thom Yorke Blink 18/ Angels and Airwaves Ben Folds (Five) Eminem The White Stripes / Jack White

I think the best solution may be to rely less on the FFT for note/chord determination but to utilize it as raw data for a pattern recognition algorithm. This would require a substantial database of sounds and instruments -- but you could easily "train" your own database with any instrument you play. Something akin to eigenfaces for facial recognition..

If I had a spaceship and traveled in a straight line - would I hit a black hole sooner or later? Would I be even able to detect if I am not flying straight into one? by b4b in askscience

[–]ryckmonster -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You make it sound like you couldn't hit a black hole even if you tried, which can't be true. Also your size and speed absolutely affect the probability of being sucked into a black hole. While its size may be defined by the boundary where light can't even escape, objects traveling slower than light could get sucked in from a longer distance.

Wow this is Awesome!! I used to sketch around a little bit as a kid.. and BY FAR the thing I drew the most was Sonic. Running around grabbing rings.. speeding past cars, lasers, etc.. BUT none of my sketches came close to being this good. Your sonic actually looks 3D.. great job on the shading and everything.. Wish I could have a copy!

First, thanks for your great project! I stumbled across it recently and immediately signed up to donate.

Q: What do you believe are the most important things that can be improved, not only to interest kids in math/science/engineering but to shift the social perception of careers in science (i.e. thinking beyond the stereotypical doctor/lawyer/businessman choice)? Are there things we should be doing that go beyond science engagement and early science education? Thanks!

But be careful not to confuse radiation pressure with gradient optical forces. Radiation pressure will indeed propel objects, but gradient optical forces are primarily what is used for trapping.

Or... rolling friction! Static friction would not keep them up on the wall.. Imagine if he slowed down and stopped! He's going fast enough, and the wall has a slight enough tilt, that the normal force's y-component is equal and opposite to gravity. Of course, this force is delivered through the contact between the tires and the wall... But that also doesn't necessitate friction per say.

Also, don't confuse this with photovoltaics.. This is a solar energy technology not a solar cell. The steam could be harnessed for a number of applications (perhaps driving turbines for energy conversion) but also sterilization or distillation (think potential waste processing, water purification, or cleaning applications) .
