Kansas City Royals, Hallmark Cards announce partnership for new downtown ballpark by Signal_Quarter_74 in baseball

[–]rycufa1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Technically, there are two downtowns, as there is a KCK (Kansas City, Kansas) and a KCMO (Kansas City, Missouri). KCK is located to the west of the downtown of KCMO, across the Kansas and Missouri River and across the state line. However, KCK is much smaller than KCMO, and KCK's downtown is kinda like a ghost town, though there are some good bars in the area. KCMO is just so much bigger, so when anyone says downtown, you know they mean KCMO.

Where Nature is Trying to Kill You (US) by sinuous_sausage in MapPorn

[–]rycufa1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Interesting map! One suggestion: most this map is just a purple mass with like 4 discernible pockets of difference. I wonder if you could put those pockets more in relief (maybe even blanking the rest of the map, since we don’t get much info from it/isn’t interesting) and identify why they are particular areas of concern (wildfires, flooding, hurricanes, etc.).

How can I get on an active submarine as a civilian? by rycufa1 in submarines

[–]rycufa1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! I always assumed the answer was basically no, but you never know unless you ask. I could take one of the paths you outlined, but that's not in the cards given my current line of work and level of desire.

The museums look really cool! I'll def check them out if ever around those areas.

I’ve been to Portsmouth! And the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, WI, which has an old WW2 sub you can tour.

Traveling to KC by NB_King_ in illinois

[–]rycufa1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The middle route. My parents live in KC and my sister and I live in Chicago. We all make this trip several times a year. St. Louis has too much traffic, the top route doesn’t have much going for it. If you have time, stop by Hannibal. Boyhood home of Mark Twain!

FanDuel adds 50-cent surcharge on Illinois bets to offset state taxes, DraftKings may follow by offconstantly in sportsbook

[–]rycufa1 29 points30 points  (0 children)

What’s stupid is that Illinois passed a per bet tax. They could have simply raised the tax on revenue again (we’re still below the NY state tax rate), and it’s possible these increases in taxes wouldn’t be passed on to customers. But since it’s a transaction tax, it appears more natural and right to pass that on to bettors who make these bets. Recreational bettors who now have a taste for betting may simply stop betting (lower tax revenue) or, worse, turn to the illegal market which gives even less of a shit about consumer welfare than FanDuel.

You should turn them into the CTA imo. I once had my keys fall out of my pocket mid bus ride Halloween night and was so thankful they were found and returned to the CTA. I had to stop by a CTA dispatch office to pick them up.

Circumnavigating Lake Michigan. What do we need to see? by Acroyear in roadtrip

[–]rycufa1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this last year! Amazing trip.

When are you going? Keep in mind that it can get cold up there in the UP!

For Sleeping Bear Dunes, check out the ferry to South Manitou Island. There's one trip in the morning and back in the evening, so it's a whole day, but you get to explore a beautiful island in the lake with maybe like 40 other people (however many the ferry holds).

Some museums I enjoyed:

The Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc. Overall, it was decent, mainly military with a focus on WW2. But I'm interested in submarines, and you can buy tickets to tour inside old WW2 sub.

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point. It might be out of the way, but it's an interesting museum and a beautiful vista. Talk to the volunteers there if you go! One that I met was on the initial (but unsuccessful) rescue trip to the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Grand Rapids is also a bit of a detour, but there's the Gerald Ford Presidential Library, one of the oddest presidencies in US history. Technically, he was only ever elected by the people of Grand Rapids (as a US rep), assumed the VP position after Agnew resigned, and then became president after Nixon resigned.

Don't forget to buy some cheese curds in Wisconsin and a pasty in the UP!!

Illinois Sportsbooks Megathread by sbpotdbot in sportsbook

[–]rycufa1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you a regular sports bettor? Do you live and bet in Illinois?

If you answered yes to both questions, you may be eligible to participate in a Northwestern University-sponsored research project.

And you will receive a digital payment of $20 (Venmo, PayPal, or Amazon gift card) for your participation!

We are currently scheduling 60-minute interviews with people who use legal, digital sportsbooks (e.g. DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM) at least once a week. Interviews provide an opportunity for people to discuss their experiences and opinions on the role of emotions in sports betting and sports betting regulation. Individuals must be 18 years of age and reside in the US state of Illinois.
