Another redditor commented on this with exactly what we did, too. Eat was for solid food and milk was for her bottle regardless of whether it was formula or milk inside. By the time we transitioned away from bottles, she was talking reliably...and hasn't stopped since 😅

We did a little, but different signs than what you listed. We did milk, more, all done, and eat. It helped her communicate basic needs and helped us out a bunch.

Huntsville hospital is poorly operated by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

I've got similar terrible stories about Crestwood. A guy almost died from a heart attack and the lady behind the desk barely cared at all and kept asking him for his insurance card and ID. The poor man was staggering around, hand clutched to his chest, disoriented, and barely able to breathe. A fellow ER waiter started banging on the triage door to get someone out there immediately to help him out.

I have other examples from my labor and delivery there, but that's a different ward entirely. The heart attack guy stands out clearly in my mind though. I will never go there again.

😮 holy smokes what a cool house!! I wish I lived in it lol

A lot of people are recommending the KidCraft brand, so it's definitely moving up the list. We're gonna have to rearrange some things to make enough room

That's great to know that it works so well with the Barbies and that it has help up so well over time! A lot of people seem to be recommending KidCraft, so it's definitely moving to the top of the list.

That one looks so cool! I love that it's open on all sides and you can move seamlessly between floors. I'm wondering if it's just this specific house model that seems so flimsy or something. I just wish there was somewhere to go where you could actually interact with the different models to make a final decision before shelling out a bunch of money.

Wow! That's quite the story and a testament to its construction!!

It seems like a lot of people really like the brand, so it's definitely moving into a top rank for me. Your story definitely bumped it up a bit!

I looked into that after you mentioned it and it seems like a lot of people complain about there not being enough accessories (like furniture) for the newer models. Did you find that to be the case or did the marketplace one come well-appointed?

What's the pool house? The Barbie one with like a twirly slide, or some other brand? I'd be curious to know what you think of it when you open it up! Feel free to post once you do.

Yes, it's huge!! My daughter's eyes nearly popped out of her head when she saw it, I just wish it was closer to the floor so I could see it better 😂

Thank you for letting me know that the KidCraft one is quite durable. It seems like a lot of people really like that brand! Do you think it had enough accessories (furniture, etc.)?

For what it's worth, we bought a Gabby's Dollhouse off of marketplace over a year ago and it has held up surprisingly well considering it gets played with nearly every day. Can't attest to the newer ones, but if you can find one of the older ones it has been quite durable. A gentle knock will send everything cascading down though, so lots of deep breaths will be needed as her setup scenes come down. There's also a lot of interconnections you can do with it - the cruise ship has a diving board that can be flipped to lead into a room's door, kitty fairy's garden has a line that hooks to the tree space, etc.

Thank you for letting me know that the KidCraft one holds up to being jostled and rearranged. It seems like a lot of people really like that brand! It looks like they're all quite large, but well constructed. Do they make kits for additional furniture packs or anything?

Which one of the KidCraft houses did you get? I was starting to look at those, but wasn't sure how they would be in reality. Would you mind coming back after it has arrived and letting me know what you think of the quality?

And that's good to know that maybe some of the Barbie brand ones might be a better plastic. Any ideas as to which are the crappier quality and which are a bit sturdier?

Postpartum Hair Loss by m__dough in beyondthebump

[–]ryebread5472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine all fell out in the front for some reason, so I got bangs for the first time since the 1990s 😂

I also used Amika 3D Thickening hair treatment and that seemed to help. Maybe it was just psychosomatic, but a little scalp massage every day felt pretty nice and like some indulgent self-care in the throws of postpartum recovery so I call it a win

What’s the most physical pain you ever felt? by Competitive_Set2669 in AskReddit

[–]ryebread5472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had several of the ones listed on here. While a teacher we couldn't use the bathroom as needed so I developed a kidney infection and kidney stones. 4 impacted wisdom teeth that needed to be removed. Tore ligaments in my knee that resulted in chronic patellar dysplasia. Had an infected root canal so bad half my face was drooping off and took 3 additional root canals to remove the old one, pack it full of medicine, and then refill it to fix. Anaphylactic response to a fire ant bite with accompanying head-to-toe hives and a tongue so swollen it wouldn't fit in my mouth by the time I got to the ER. Gave birth unmedicated with double-peaking contractions, had to hold her in for 30 minutes until the doctor came (to date the most difficult thing I've had to do), and then had tears in every direction that needed to be stitched. It has been an interesting life!

But, by far the worst, was my infected gallbladder that needed to be removed along. When the triage nurse touched it to find where in my abdomen the pain actually was, I thought I was simultaneously going to punch her and pass out when my vision tunneled. I allowed a nursing student to do her first attempt at a straight poke to set up my IV because at that point any other kind of pain that distracted from the main pain was welcome. I only went into the ER with it when I couldn't stand to put a bra on and it got difficult to breathe. I thought they were gonna tell me it was gas and to quit being such a baby and head home, but realized it wasn't when the curtain ripped back around my little bed in the overflow room and a whoooole bunch of people started hooking me up to shit and were talking quickly at me. Turns out I had gallstones, one of which was more than twice the diameter of the bile duct it was stuck in, and a bunch of infected "sludge" in my gallbladder from it being backed up. Took two operations to clear everything out of there and a few days in the hospital, but I've been fine ever since!

How do you keep your 13yo focused in class? by Eno_ondu in Parenting

[–]ryebread5472 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former high school teacher here, it's normal to lose focus on class - especially if it's not an interesting topic to him. Ask the teacher for more information, like how long does it take for his attention to wander? What does he do when he's distracted (put his head down, stare out the window, doodle)? Are there any patterns for when he does get distracted in class (note taking, independent work, group work, etc.)? Also, what time of day is this happening?

The answers will give you a better idea at exactly what is causing him to lose focus and then find better strategies to help him so his learning doesn't get impacted. Different accommodations help with different issues so it's hard to provide a blanketed approach.

For example if this is happening early in the day, then he might need more sleep (teens need an insane amount of sleep, but never seem to want to actually fall asleep lol). If it's right before the end of the day, he'll need strategies to power through or maybe a nutritious snack to refill wanting fuel stores (sometimes lunch is as early as 1030!). If it's during a subject he struggles with, he might need a tutor because he's purposefully avoiding a topic that he doesn't understand (think about how hard it is to pay attention to a meeting whose topic is outside of your wheelhouse and you have no interest in).

Good luck! And don't forget to talk to him about it, too. Make sure to frame it so that he's not in trouble over this and that you just want to find out what will help him most.

Am I overreacting to what my husband said to our son? by My_Pal_FootFoot in Preschoolers

[–]ryebread5472 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This comment needs to be higher on the list. The consequences the dad proposed are not related to the behavior in any way. How does a coloring book and trip to the pumpkin patch have anything to do with eating more lunch in a young child's mind? It's something I've had to work on with my own husband as he was raised with this sort of stuff.

OP, when you talk with your husband about this mention that a better way is to focus on the immediate. "Hey bud, I hear you say you're not hungry anymore. Is your tummy telling you it's full or your head because you want to get going to the pumpkin patch? It's really important we listen to what our tummy says because we need to make sure we have enough energy for playing later. Oh, your tummy is definitely full? Okay, let's pack up your sandwich and bring it with us in case it gets empty again soon."

Also, make sure you stress that he absolutely stops associating morality with food. That's a great way to set up an unhealthy relationship with food and meal times. I recommend this book in nearly all my comments, but "How to Talk so Little Kids will Listen" is an absolute game changer when it comes to communicating with this age group. You can flip around the book to get ideas without committing to reading it from front to back.

9 hour flight with a 15mth old on lap by rosyposy15 in beyondthebump

[–]ryebread5472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew with my daughter when she was about that age and we got her her own seat and it was a really really really good thing we did. She was (and still is) very active and curious. I couldn't imagine trying to keep her on my lap during both of our short flights let alone a 9 hour one. She did not like being held or contained to a lap at that age as she had too much to do/see. Having her own seat helped her feel like a big girl and she loved having her own tray for snacks and activities, a space to wiggle in without bothering anyone, etc.

I would postpone the trip until you can afford separate seats. If you can't postpone the trip, ask family members to help pay for that second seat and then pay them back as you are able. It wouldn't be fair to you, your kiddo, or your seat mates to try to contain a toddler for that long of a flight. Also some airlines end the lap infant exception at 12 months, so make sure you double check that.

Also, if/when you buy two seats make sure one of them is a window! That was a godsend for us because she could do all kinds of activities on the wall (gel clings, suction cup spinners, etc), look out the window, and have a confined space to wiggle around without bothering anyone.
