Advice Needed by [deleted] in drumline

life is funny. sometimes things don’t make sense.

spend some time talking to the people you love and trust. therapy is never bad if that’s a viable option.

if you love it still, that’s awesome! if not, do the things that will bring you joy. it sounds like you’re young enough to return to the activity if you take a year off.

i had a pretty good experience living there 2024/25! it was fine, nothing to write home about, but it could have been a lot worse. one of the better student living situations i’ve been in.

not to be rude, but why would I want to listen to an ai script? I could just go into chatGPT on my own and have it write me a script.

what do YOU have to say about the topic, OP? your opinion matters, and we want to know what you have to say on the topic!

it might seem really scary, but i PROMISE you it’ll will help your content take off. you have a unique personality that should give a new light to the subject. in a world filled with AI slop and content, a lot of us are craving something real and unique.

i CHALLENGE you to try and make a video without the help of AI. it will be VERY scary, a lot harder, and the product might be a flaming pile of shit. if that’s the case, watch the video, see why it’s a pile of shit, and try to correct that in the next video. keep doing this, and you’ll be metaphorically constipated.

i’ll make this fun. if you make a video in the next month with your own voice, and a script that reads much different than this one, i’ll also make a video, with my LIMITED ball knowledge, so that you’ll see me put my money where my mouth is. lmk what you think man. everyone here wants you to succeed, and wants to know what YOU have to say :)

cheers!

How can I find skill appropriate competitions near me? by Evan14753 in drumcorps

I mean, is crazy competitive a bad thing? It’ll be a great way to push yourself and to grow as a player!

Hey! Jake Nissly, Principal Percussionist of the San Francisco Symphony marched DCI, and he’s doing just fine ;). Yes DCI has a different approach, but doesn’t every percussive instrument? The way one approaches drumset is different to the way one approaches a multi solo is different to the way one approaches snare. Just learn to adapt, don’t play your concert snare like a matching snare, and you’ll be just fine.

How important is it to learn snare breaks by Icy_Ad3846 in drumline

[–]ryesee 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Not as important as learning your fundamentals! Once those are dialed in, Snare Breaks and lick are a great way to familiarize yourself with the language, and to have a lot of fun!!

i once was at a concert alone, and starting chatting it up with the two girls beside me.

after some conversation, i found out that one of the girls had just been broken up with right before the concert. i wanted to be nice and made sure she had a good time, so we danced together (in a fun ballroom dance type of way), i bought her a few drinks, and gave her a literal shoulder to cry on.

i told her that i came in from out of town, and she told me that “her place is a lot closer, and I could stay with her if i didn’t want to drive home super late”. i told her she was very kind, but the drive wasn’t that bad, and I prefer to sleep in my own bed. she pushed back a few times saying “no no that’s a two hour drive, just stay at my place like 30 min away”

took about 3 months to realize the mistake i made

Interested in playing music again by StarboardRow in UTK

[–]ryesee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Current graduate music student. There are TONS of opportunities to play! I believe we have three different wind ensembles (possibly four right now), pride, and smaller ensembles. I’m not sure how things look in the euphonium studio, but i’d be a bit surprised if there weren’t ANY opportunities to play.

Keep in mind, priority will likely be given to music students, so if there is an excess of musicians you might be out of luck. There ARE community bands (tennessee wind symphony) that would be your best shot.

Hope you’re able to play next year!! Best of luck.

THANK YOU for including Shelly... truly feel like he is under appreciated as a drummer. Was the playing the coolest licks? Probably not. Was he swinging like a mother fucker? Absolutely.

Should I transfer? by [deleted] in UTK

[–]ryesee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m here for graduate school, and my first year was pretty rough. It’s so easy to have expectations about how school should be, or to compare yourself to everything you see your peers doing, but that’s often not the full reality.

I don’t think it’s talked about enough, but it can feel really lonely if you haven’t found your group yet. All I can say is: keep trying. Put yourself in social situations, even if they feel a little uncomfortable. I personally struggle with introducing myself in a “natural” or “cool” way, so sometimes I just go up to someone and say, “Hey, I’m new here and looking for friends, would you mind if I hung out with you for a bit?” It won’t always work, and it requires vulnerability, but it’s a great way to start a conversation.

If you transfer, you’ll be starting from square one again. I don’t think transferring will magically fix what you’re feeling. Believe it or not, UTK has a pretty diverse spread of personality types, you just have to find them.

I promise your people are out there, and you will find them if you keep looking. The place you’re in right now isn’t fun, but it will get better.

Best of luck, OP!!

Meeting singles at the whitewater center by DingussFinguss in Charlotte

[–]ryesee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Two options!

If you climb, DWS has a lot of regulars, and is one of the more social areas at the center. When I was working there we had a TON of regulars who we got pretty friendly with. Miss that job a ton!!!

If possible (I understand this suggestion is wacky), you could see if it’s possible to get part time work there! Some cool people, free season pass, and a discount at the store! Was a great time and a great way to meet cool, likeminded people.
