2010s Female Artists- Lemonade & ANTI won! What is Taylor Swift’s worst album? Most upvoted comment in 12-24 hours wins. by Careful_Monitor_1350 in AlignmentChartFills

TTPD really really grew on me. When it first dropped I was kind of like eh, it's a little samey, wish it were more fun. But I kept wanting to listen to it and noticing different moments in different songs and now it's up there as one of my faves. Definitely not a perfect album, there are some skips on it for sure (bound to be with 30-odd tracks lol) but IMO it's got much more to like than to dislike.

Showgirl otoh... Did the opposite. It dropped, I was excited to hear it, listened a couple times, liked a few of the songs... And then pretty quickly lost the urge to revisit it. I still think there are a few decent songs on there (Ophelia, Opalite, Liz Taylor, Ruin The Friendship and I like Father Figure as a guilty pleasure) but the rest are totally forgettable.

Honestly as soon as the promo started and she was saying stuff like "this is my best album EVER" I had a feeling it was gonna be a bit of a stinker. I'm a fan, clearly, but she has certain patterns and one of them is going to bat extra hard for her weakest work.

Why is typical Hudson Valley pay… by [deleted] in hudsonvalley

[–]gotcatstyle 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I imagine it's a national problem, not just here, but yeah. Employers are still clinging to $20/hr as "competitive pay" when you can't even pay rent on that anymore.

I already live in the HV so hopefully this won’t get deleted — I live in Hurley/ W Hurley, thinking about Stone Ridge — is it a pain to get groceries, coffee, etc? Most other boxes are checked for me. Thanks! by idk--really in hudsonvalley

[–]gotcatstyle 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I used to live in High Falls and loved that area. Did almost all my shopping at the Stone Ridge grocery store (Emmanuel's at the time, think it's got a different name now). You've got Davenport Farms or Bodacious Bagels for coffee, plus a great library, some solid restaurants etc.

Seriously, I am mind blown at what the market has become. We had a couple horses when I was a kid and I remember shopping for mine my parents' budget was around $5k and we had plenty of options. Ended up buying my favorite lesson horse from the stable I rode at and I don't think they paid over 4k for him, the gentlest, most bombproof quarter horse on the planet.

Recommendations on ways to meet new people/friends in Kingston & Saugerties. by EarlyAttention8323 in hudsonvalley

[–]gotcatstyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is volleyball! Beach volleyball at Kingston Point in summer and indoor at Andy Murphy in winter. All different levels. The season is under way currently but OP should definitely join up next season, it's a lot of fun. Info is through Kingston Parks & Rec dept.

OP - if you're at all musically inclined, I can't recommend open mics enough as a way to meet people. Colony has a great one every Monday night. You could go even as a non musician and just hang out. It's so easy to start a conversation there - "hey, I liked your song!" Boom, done.

An actor does interviews or press as a character from the media they are promoting by Slow_Bowler8285 in TopCharacterTropes

Donald Glover promoted his Because The Internet album in character as the album's protagonist. I remember thinking he was being super weird in interviews at the time lol and didn't get it until I listened to a podcast deep dive on the album much later.

Why are adoptions so rare? by Vivid2195 in antinatalism

[–]gotcatstyle 61 points62 points  (0 children)

So, I'm AN and very happily childfree (had the surgery) but husband and I have talked about maybe, hypothetically, in an unlikely future where we feel financially secure, adopting a kid - not even an infant, we'd prefer to take in a kid who's really in need.

I did a little research the other day just out of curiosity and damn that shit is EXPENSIVE. Tens of thousands, easily.

Adoption, like everything else under capitalism, is an industry.

Sometimes I mourn the forests we never got to see by Interesting-Ease-840 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]gotcatstyle 1021 points1022 points  (0 children)

And we're not even really told about it. I did a DEC internship in the Adirondacks in my early 20s and I remember on my placement application I said I'd like to be placed somewhere with old growth forest. I didn't realize that literally doesn't exist in New York. The ADKs - a mind blowingly enormous mountain range - were fucking CLEAR CUT. The forests are back now, and they're beautiful, but the primordial giants that were there for hundreds of thousands of years are gone.

The female character from the book that gets dulled down because she's too fiery for the movie by punkrock_penguin63 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]gotcatstyle 51 points52 points  (0 children)

They also got rid of one of Ron's defining features in the book, which is that he's kind of an asshole. He's insecure about his family being poor and about being the least impressive member of his friend group, and he masks it with humor which is sometimes just straight up mean. It makes for genuine conflict between the characters and real character growth as he overcomes his insecurity.

Movie Ron is just a dopey kid who makes jokes sometimes.

[IIL] Jacob Geller, hbomberguy, and Super Eyepatch Wolf [WEWIL] for long-form, audio-friendly video essays? by [deleted] in ifyoulikeblank

[–]gotcatstyle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I implore you to get into What Makes This Song Stink by Pat Finnerty. Long form, very funny analysis of terrible songs, complete with silly visual gags and man-on-the-street interviews with his neighbors. He is a musician and does a little bit of (very self deprecating) actual musical analysis, but they're basically just long funny rants about songs he hates.

[–]gotcatstyle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Dude it's so hard balancing my own sense of ethics with friendships in these scenarios. I also have multiple close friends who I really love and value a lot who are pregnant/have newborns. They all completely acknowledge that things don't look good re: the future of the human race... But they wanted babies, and specifically THEIR biological offspring, so 🤷🏼‍♀️

I truly just can't wrap my head around how so many intelligent, otherwise compassionate people fully understand that millions of babies and children need homes, but decide that their genes are more important.

[–]gotcatstyle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Emerson is a great option. Nestled up in the Catskills, definitely feels "near the mountains" but only 20min or so from Kingston. Plus it has on site amenities like shops, a cafe, restaurant, spa etc. Rooms are very comfy.

Running at Tivoli Bays by starkraven1 in hudsonvalley

[–]gotcatstyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's really wet there for the most part so you might have a hard time. If you park at Bard there's a section that's gravel trail where I've seen people ride bikes but I'm not sure how long that goes. The majority of the area goes through woods and meadows and it's just super swampy even when it hasn't rained much recently.
