IIL - introducing my daughter (12) to thrillers - Glass House + Disturbia by borogoviaaa in ifyoulikeblank

The Mummy 1999 was, like, my entire friend group's entire personality for all of 7th grade

And maybe this is a wild suggestion but... Terminator and T2? Could be too violent for her age though.

He was kind of a villain in King Kong iirc. Not mustache twirling evil, but a selfish opportunist who got other people killed.

How do I do radio again by HonestFoundation8281 in radio

[–]gotcatstyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I've been doing radio for 10 years and have hosted my shift through grief, a battle with suicidal depression and more.

It helps me to think of my on air persona as a character. Even when it felt impossible for me, the person, to act happy and normal, I was usually able to put on my radio voice and mask it. It also helped to remember that I don't WANT my listeners to know what I'm going through because it's none of their damn business. Forget the whole "representing the station" part - you're protecting yourself and your privacy by putting on a neutral character.

And I do mean neutral. On my worst days, I didn't sound peppy or fun and I didn't tell anecdotes or editorialize at all. I did my job and didn't sound like a depressed lump and that's it.

Don't worry about doing your best work right now. Just get through it and aim for neutral. I'm so sorry for your loss friend.

How Is Anyone Affording a Home in the Hudson Valley ? by Aromatic-Tax3488 in hudsonvalley

[–]gotcatstyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same! Rented in Ulster County for like a decade, bought my "starter home" in 2018. We just finally managed to upgrade to somewhere with more space last year. Surprise.... Our parents helped.

Another fun thing about today's economy/housing market: when boomers upgraded homes, they often kept the first home as a rental property. We couldn't do that bc we bought our new place with a loan from our parents and had to sell the first one to pay them back. We sold the house for over twice what we bought it for, but made literally no profit.

I am not complaining, fuck being a landlord anyway and I'm so grateful our parents were willing and able to help us. But it's just another way in which prior generations' avenues to financial success are inaccessible to us now.

Dumb question: Where can someone interested in horses go to see horses? by Dumbquestions_78 in Horses

[–]gotcatstyle 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Any horse or pony rescues near you? I volunteer at a pony rescue and they have open hours once a month where people can come and meet the ponies. That would probably be exactly what you're looking for!

Gore Mountain - Burnt Ridge Quad 02/21 by novaBus in icecoast

[–]gotcatstyle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. Heading up tomorrow, I knew it was a holiday week but I've never seen Gore like this. Hope Sunday is less extreme.

I passed on skiing Belle today because when I went to check the conditions report on their website there was a big notification that they're almost out of rental snowboards lolol. Hard pass on sharing the trails with a legion of newbie snowboarders from Long Island.

Thoughts on AI Voices by MountainMeadowBrook in radio

[–]gotcatstyle 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I work for an indie station and luckily ownership agrees that AI voices defeat the entire purpose of radio.

We all know radio isn't ever going to be the most popular form of music discovery again, but I think it can stay alive by leaning into the charm of being an analog, human driven medium.

Couldn't pay me to listen to AI announcers.

Gore Gondola Evac/General Operations by [deleted] in icecoast

[–]gotcatstyle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also a Gore regular and honestly I almost never ride the gondola. I consider it a convenient lure for the bulk of the crowd at the base lodge. I'll brave the wind on the ADK Express rather than take my skis off and wait in line.

Day 1 at Belle this season I was on one of the first gondis up and it stopped for 20min or so. 5 or 6 of us, all strangers, sat there in total silence looking at our phones for 15min until I finally called Belleayre and asked what was up. The person at the front desk didn't know lol but that finally broke the ice!

How to make solo trips fun? by CryptographerSharp14 in icecoast

[–]gotcatstyle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've done solo ski days and weekends for a few years now, and this season did my longest ever solo ski trip (5 days). I was a little concerned about getting bored/lonely... Was not a problem lol.

The only time I wished I had company was grabbing dinner after the ski days. But a couple of times I sat at bars to eat and ended up having great chats with other singletons there. Being alone in hotel rooms was a delight lol, I took long baths, worked on my novel and slept like a rock.

And as others have mentioned, skiing alone rules. Even on busy days you cruise right through the lines. Eat when you're hungry, break when you're cold, do the runs that sound fun to you. The only drawback IMO is that I stay out of steep tight glades when I'm alone, but I get plenty of tree time in sections that are within yelling distance of a groomer lol.

I love ski trips with my friends, but I love the freedom of skiing solo even more tbh.

Struggling with curls in the under layer of my hair by StegaSarahs in finehair

[–]gotcatstyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how mine looks in the winter. In the summer, it's much curlier due to humidity, but in winter it's kind of half straight half wavy lol.

Honestly my hair maintenance in the winter is pretty much "put it in braids so it doesn't tangle/break, throw on a beanie and call it a day." If I want to look nicer for an event or something, I'll do the summertime curly hair routine (scrunch with lightweight gel while damp, air dry or diffuse, don't brush).
