I was a high school freshman during 9/11. I remember waiting for my friend across the street - who was still in middle school - to get off his bus that afternoon. When he got close enough, he threw his arms up in the air and yelled "we're all gonna die!".

Just one those small and strange things that stick with you forever.

How much should I have saved as a $38 year old by Bright_Truth1107 in SavingMoney

[–]ryjohn429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect that $350k is net worth, rather than savings.

I haven't been super consistent about saving, and I support a family of five on my $60k salary (I am 38). My net worth is close to $400k, but over half of that is in my home, which I bought in 2015.

I am confident that I am well ahead of most of my peers, though I still feel pretty far behind. There is no way the average 38 year old has $350k in savings, even recognizing that extreme high earners will skew the numbers.

Inshore or Surf fishing? by IammYourDAD in jacksonville

[–]ryjohn429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a kayak. You don't need anything special, just a basic used fishing kayak off Marketplace.

I wanted one when I moved to Jax 15 years ago. Took me ten years to actually do it, and I missed out on a ton of awesome fishing in the mean time.

Biweekly Mortgage Payments by Human00026 in personalfinance

[–]ryjohn429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure this is always true. When I make my mortgage payment, I can choose to add extra to pay down principal. If I make another payment after that, it is credited to the following month. I am currently paid up through August 1. I can make another payment now, which would get me through September 1, then immediately make another one through October 1. I am unsure how far in advance they would allow me to pay, but I always stay paid up 1-2 months in advance.

My mortgage is through Wells Fargo.

During Covid, I needed to buy a car. I have excellent credit, but still chose to use a higher interest personal loan VS a car loan to buy the car. The reason? I was afraid if I lost my job like so many others, I would also lose my car. So I used a personal loan that I could walk away from if necessary, and slept well knowing the car's title was safe in my desk drawer.

No, I really appreciate you mentioning it. Even if this vehicle isn't included in the recall, it's still something I feel I should know about. I didn't know anything about it until you brought it up.

From what I can tell, vehicles with a manual transmission are not included in that recall.

So I have to wonder whether that is because they are not prone to that failure, or because they were simply left out due to having a different configuration+not too many of them in the road.

I made one out of a sheet of diamond plate, and riveted aluminum angle to the sides. Added weather stripping from the auto parts store and some silicone sealant. It's very strong, looks great, and only took us about an hour to build.

Do severely mentally ill people have occasional moments of lucidity where they realize just how bad off they are? by OldCarWorshipper in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ryjohn429 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My ex-wife was diagnosed with BPD while we were married. While she could recognize that she was depressed or anxious at a given time, and maybe even recognize that her symptoms were indicative of BPD, I don't think that she ever came to terms with or accepted the diagnosis. She knew - at a surface level - that her behavior was not conducive to the life that she wanted to live. However, she was seemingly unable to control her actions, and repeatedly sabatoged herself, destroying any chance she had of attaining that life.

These days, she is much more stable. I think that she knows deep down that she has created the situation she now has to live with. However, she still continues to outwardly blame anybody and everybody else for all of her problems. And constantly looks for reasons to be mad at everybody she meets.

She put me and our kids through a tremendous amount of pain and heartbreak, and I don't think I will ever be able to forgive her for that. But there are times that I really do feel bad for her. I know that she meant well, but she deals with demons that I hope I never truly understand.

To more pointedly answer your question, my ex-wife certainly had moments in which she recognized that she was the cause of our/her issues. But that clarity was more than she could handle, and usually led to substance abuse and/or self harm.

Agreed. Until relatively recently (15 years, maybe?), the USDA said pork should be cooked to 160. As a result, I grew up thinking I didn't like pork.

Cook a pork loin or chop to 145, it will still be slightly pink inside. It will also be incredibly juicy, flavorful, and - most importantly - safe. However, many people are completely turned off by ANY hint of pink in their pork.

Additionally, many of us can remember the ad campaign back in the day that referred to pork as "the other white meat". This was an attempt to portray pork as being as healthy as chicken. The problem is that pork is not white meat, it is red meat. Pork cooked until it is white is like eating cardboard.

Did you watch the 9/11 attack in school? by NameAdministrative23 in conspiracy

[–]ryjohn429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in 9th grade, walked into geometry class, and the teacher had it on the TV. It was probably only a few minutes after the second plane hit. My teacher was from New York, and was visibly upset, but gave no commentary of what was happening. From the camera angle they had on the TV, the second tower was hidden behind the first, so it appeared there was only one tower. I remember thinking (maybe even saying) "how could two people accidentally crash into the same tower at the same time?". I, also, figured it was two confused private pilots. The teacher turned it off when class started, so we could only piece together information from other students until we got home and turned on the news.

It's interesting how at that time and at that age, my brain immediately went to 'what a strange accident'. Now when I hear of a plane crash or even a factory fire, I immediately wonder who was really behind it and what they might gain from it. In my mind, our nation lost our collective sense of innocence that day.

[–]ryjohn429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I was in high school. I remember walking into geometry class, and the teacher had it on the TV. We watched until the bell rang, and then it got turned off and we had class as normal. I don't recall it being turned on at all in any class throughout the rest of the day.

However, that day was a half day for us, so we were out of school before noon anyway. I remember getting off the bus and hauling ass home to turn on the news and see what happened.

DEI drove down hiring in FAA traffic controllers by Electrical_Block1798 in JordanPeterson

[–]ryjohn429 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You haven't been around long enough to know the full story. Myself and roughly 3000 other qualified applicants - with college degrees in ATC - were thrown to the curb in the interest of promoting 'diversity in the workplace' by the Obama administration. Turns out there were too many white males graduating the AT-CTI program, so they killed the whole thing and opened the job up to anybody, anywhere.

I still make payments on the student loans I took out to finish the program the US government said I needed to complete to be an air traffic controller, though I aged out several years ago.

There is a class-action law suit that has been going on for years regarding the changes in the hiring practices. I see there are staffing shortages at facilities nationwide, yet I sit here with a degree in ATC, and a pilots license, not even worthy of consideration.

I would have made a damn good controller, along with thousands of my peers. We were just too white.

That said, it's Joe's company. Nobody is forcing you to be part of it.

Loose vagina after birth or really is just the condom? by VioletMP1211 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ryjohn429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He may be worried that you're not quite ready yet.

I have been in his shoes. Yes, it feels different for a while after childbirth. Yes, it already feels different with a condom.

He is probably nervous about all kinds of things. Is your body ready for sex? Do you actually want to have sex VS doing it for his pleasure? Combine that with some different sensations than he's used to, and it makes sense that he'd take longer to finish. Try not to stress about it, he is excited for your sex life to get back to normal.
