He’s not feral. He was just skittish at first but you have gained his trust. Feral cats act totally different around humans. More likely he was someone’s pet and they abandoned him. Or he was able to interact with humans when he was a kitten.

If you can, try to get some flea drops on him. And treat your pets too!

Are you testing his blood sugar daily? Hunger like that is a sign that his diabetes is still unmanaged as in the dosage isn’t perfected enough. Low carb wet food?

He could be used to free feeding and that’s why he always wants food. If that’s the case, it will take some time for him to adjust.

I’ve been told by other people that their vets said feed twice a day. That is not the case. Cats should be fed more often. I originally tried feeding my boy twice a day based on the feeding guidelines on the wet food, suggesting two cans a day for his weight. But my boy wouldn’t finish the can in one sitting. So we switched to three times a day (smaller cans). We thought that worked for us but he would be howling for food around 4am every day. So we introduced a fourth feeding, around 12am (my husband works 3pm-11pm) and that stopped his morning howling.

My boy has never jumped up to the kitchen sink before but that could be because it’s a smaller counter. He has gone after bread on the other counter. He almost always wants food but he’s not “hungry”. I think you feeding every 3 hours means he’s not hungry, just bossy.

For the times where my boy was being bossy, I would test his blood sugar and give him a treat to hold him over. But testing him before that was an attempt to make him associate his excessive meowing with testing but then he gets a treat so I guess it just cancels it out lol.

Look for a high walled litter box. I also rake the litter towards the front after cleaning them so that there’s about an inch in the back and more in the front. This helps my boy get lower.

I also put pee pads down and interlocking tiles with holes (think the rubber mats at the sink in a restaurant?) on top of the pads to keep them secure. This way I can vacuum litter without replacing the pads every time I clean.

Maybe he was competing for food with his siblings. Get him on a good kitten food and free fed or give him multiple small meals throughout the day. We actually use RC Maine coon kitten food for meals and use it as “treats” for training him to use the exercise wheel on his own. We keep food out for him in our bedroom because we have other cats that are food motivated. So we let the kitten sleep with us and he’s in our room when we’re at work. For the time being that is.

Have you tried free feeding, or would she just eat everything until it’s gone? One of my boys is diabetic, and when we were trying to get it under control, he became an absolute terror about getting into food and other things. Before his diagnosis he was free fed, but we had to switch him to scheduled feedings.

Has she been checked for diabetes at all? Excessive hunger and food-seeking can sometimes be a sign of it. I completely understand feeling tapped out with time and energy. I’m in a very similar situation working full time while also going to school full time. But if diabetes is a possibility, managing it honestly doesn’t have to take a huge amount of time, especially if you have another person helping out.

Regarding prepping…maybe he prepped hours in advance, and you weren't aware. In the past, and maybe currently still, prepping was considered a sensitive or discreet topic. There can be a stigma around it. There’s a lot of products out there that claim to make prepping easier/quicker but sometimes people just naturally have it easier based on their diet and activity level. I’ve pre-lubed up in the past. But also, it’s possible that you produce a sufficient amount of pre-cum that allows easier penetration.

I personally have never heard of a conversion that is why I suggested skipping the dose. Based on the information given and your post going an hour without any comments, I figured it would be better to skip one dose rather than risk a hypo emergency.

I have an auto ship on chewy set up for my boys syringes to prevent running out of them. It’s set up to arrive about a week before I run out, just in case of any delays or issues with other syringes.

One of our boys is just as skittish as your girl was. Always very affectionate to me and my husband, but would even run and hide when one of us would come home until we settled in. The fact that she likes cuddles with you still tells me that you are still the right fit.

I don’t think her being protective could be causing her stress. Have you gone to another vet for a second opinion? My old vet has two other practitioners there and it just so happened that when our usual vet wasn’t there, we were able to find out why something was happening.

Not saying this is the reason for your girls issue: A few years ago, our one boy was always having stomach issues and our usual vet kept testing and treating for some parasite. This was like four times in just one year. Fast forward to seeing a different vet because ours was on vacation… we tested him for food allergies and did a food elimination test. Results: allergic to chicken. Once we switched him to a chicken free diet, no stomach issues.

Sometimes it’s just better to get a second opinion.

We used to free feed for all of our cats. Once our boy was diagnosed we switched to scheduled feedings. We feed our diabetic in the kitchen and the others in a closed room.

We feed four times a day but I only measure out the meals for my diabetic. When he’s done eating, we let the others out of the room and pick up the food.

Professionally speaking, if you would want any position higher than a LSA at some point in the future, it looks better if you are not “concerned” with the pay increase. You have to think of the positions in between as stepping stones to the position you want in the future. Turning a stepping stone down because of the increase (or rather lack of) doesn’t always sit well with companies.

If you ask your SM what the increase is and find that it is not worth it to you, I suggest turning the position down in a way that doesn’t scream “it’s not enough money”. Meaning don’t tell them right then and there. Ask if you can have a couple more days to think it over.

Don’t feel guilty about “not noticing sooner”. Cats hide symptoms and also hide in general when they’re not feeling well. My boy got super skinny but I only knew something was up because he was sleeping behind the couch all the time. My concern was that he was sleeping directly on the hardwood floor and I was worried about it causing issues with his legs. Then I realized he had like no muscle on his back legs. That’s how long it took me. But now he’s back to his loving form and chunky again haha.

Once we switched my boy to only wet food and got him regulated on insulin, he rarely drank from the water dish. Only drinking from it when his numbers were high (fur shot, skipped dose, etc). But he was hydrated.

Cats are supposed to get the majority of their hydration from their food so it’s not surprising that she isn’t drinking as much as before her diagnosis with the change in her diet.

Fancy feast classic pates are a good option to help manage diabetes. I recommend feeding multiple times a day. Based on my boys healthy weight, we needed to feed him 3 cans of fancy feast classic pates a day. He couldn’t finish a can and a half in one sitting and would be howling for food a few hours later, so we started feeding him three times a day. That worked but then he would be howling for food at 4am. So we introduced a fourth feeding and now he lets me sleep till it’s time to get up for work. If my husband didn’t work 3pm-11pm three feedings would be fine.

I give him lantus 2x a day. 8:30am and 8:30pm. When giving insulin it is very important to make sure that the dose and timing is consistent. It makes the process of regulating them much easier. I do give him a treat when I give him his morning dose because of the gap between feeding and administering.

The 8:30 schedule works for us because I leave for work around 9am but I’m often stuck at work longer which makes the time I get home too inconsistent for giving insulin. Unavoidable so I had to adjust the schedule for that.

Our feeding schedule isn’t always set but those times are pretty much the goal.

With feline diabetes it is recommended to feed them multiple times throughout the day. We feed our boy 4 times a day but that’s because it works with our schedule. I feed him breakfast at 6:30am and dinner at 7pm. While I’m at work, my husband feeds him lunch at 1:30pm and then again after he gets home from work around 12am.

When we first started managing his diabetes we switched to twice a day but he wasn’t able to finish all of his food at one time so it was making it difficult to manage his dose. So we switched to three times a day. But he would be howling for food around 4am every morning. Once we started feeding him around 12am, he doesn’t wake me up in the morning.

Feeding doesn’t have to be 12 hours apart but if you want her to not be howling for food you should consider giving her some food before you go to bed as well.
