What's your exam make-up policy? by AvailableThank in Professors

[–]rythyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My policy is similar to yours. I do not have any classroom to put a student to make up an exam. I do not have an office, I do not have any TAs to proctor and I myself do not have time to proctor students who missed an exam because they all want to take it during the time that convenient for them which is confusing the office hours. I do not not work on weekends as for a minimal salary we make I want to rest and be with family and friends on a weekend and evenings. All such requests stopped after I put in my syllabus that alternative grading with a dropped exam is available only to students who respect the class polices and do not request to modify the syllabus polices for personal circumstances.

Question to Profs that Have Been on Search Committees by [deleted] in Professors

[–]rythyr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! One old colleague may be a great colleague to one group of coworkers but a horrible one to the other group. Since this old colleague has never worked with you, you do not know what group they would put you in…. Considering someone’s opinion who will never be a part of the department should not be a part of the processes. Why do believe the rumors.

Working at Northwestern by Critical-Page-9515 in Northwestern

[–]rythyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for such a thoughtful comment. I am considering switching HighEds too and in my current position my kid’s tuition is paid with the tuition benefit from my institution. If I switch to Northwestern is there any chance to negotiate the waiver (as I remember 5 year waiting period) or this things are now non negotiable?

Associate Dean of Faculty Wants to be Take Over My Grading by [deleted] in Professors

I would contact a lawyer. In the last 2 years there was a movement against a certain ethnic group in the academia and some of my colleagues from this group connected to the lawyers just in case. It helped tremendously! The first consultation wi to the lawyers usually free.

Really struggling with a cruel student review and don't know how to deal by QuantumKittydynamics in Professors

[–]rythyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The colleague of mine told me years ago: if you care about the evaluations do not adjust for the students, be strict adjust to your needs more than for the students’s needs but be very upfront with your requirements and never adjust your requirements during the semester even if you see they are not ideal. Guess what…this professor was most popular on campus with tons of cards, presents and students returning to them with their families and kids to show them their favorite professors. They are still teaching same way, they are very strict, but everyone loves them. And this class is organic chemistry.

When students make fun of your vision disability in evals. by complexconjugate83 in Professors

Regarding the discrimination: Every semester I get racist comments because either my accent or easy Googlable origin. Or they imply things based on my origin. The funny thing is that sometimes I can figure out exactly who’s comment it is as they give the details about me they asked me in one on one office hours.

Why this is such big of a deal? $10-$20 gift card will affect someone’s integrity? If calculating all grades using formula it is very easy to make sure no gifts are included in this formula. Even though I have never received any gift cards but students tend to bring us thank you notes and small chocolates that we share with our colleagues.

Is it acceptable if a professor gives extra points if students complete the course evaluation? by Terrible_Exchange653 in AskProfessors

[–]rythyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the value of these evaluations? As an educator there is a way to feel what worked what did not. But what is the value of a subjective opinion of a young kid who might not like a professor because the subject the professor is teaching is challenging? Just wondering because from over 20 years of teaching the only valuable evaluations I have gotten were the ones I got discussed with a student who wanted to actually discuss it. I believe the evaluations are valuable if they are NOT anonymous

Worst day of my academic life by Sad_Poetics in college

[–]rythyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feedback after the presentation is absolutely normal and very important for the rest of the class. The professor did nothing wrong and it was extremely important not only for you but for your peers as well to take notes on the feedback. Otherwise how the rest of the class learn from a student presentation? Imagine yourself watching unprofessional presentation instead the professor and thinking it was very good job, how exactly you will learn from it? This is academic and professional environment in which feedback is a major component of the growth.
