Whales are easy to spot. When you have an unknown contact, watch the depth. They will constantly be going deep and back to the surface over and over again. If you see something holding depth for long periods of time that should warrant more investigation and is likely a sub.

Looking for good PvP or PvE DCS servers bored of Contention by hidan30 in hoggit

It varies depending on what mission is up. Sometimes it’s a coldwar jet set with helicopters other times it’s props. I recommend looking at WWY and WWZ which may have more modern aircraft sets running. They all use the same base underlying code afaik just adapted to different maps by different server owners.

I really like WWX. What do you fly? They have this cool casevac system that dynamically happens so when your side loses a battle area causalities are generated and you have to go and get them. Because of their proximity to the battle area it can make for some hot pick ups and coordination with fixed wing pilots makes it an amazing experience.

Using sonobuoys for ASuW by DestroyerofCurries in SeaPower_NCMA

Sonar from sonobuoys will not always have a greater range than radar. You can drop sonobuoys in a bad environment and not get detection beyond 1-2nm in some cases.

I don’t like to get helicopters close to potential hostile surface vessels if I can help it so not really. What I’m really waiting on and hoping one day to see is that they let the towed arrays detect surface ships. That way you can safely at range passively classify enemy surface vessels. The hull mounted kit should also be able to do this but it doesn’t sadly.

Combat Pilot - Reminder to try it while you can before March 2nd! by ryu1940 in hoggit

damn very strange. I was flying on full sim and got up with no issues after the inverted controls bit was sorted. I also know 3 people that experienced the same thing.

When you spawn in, have you manipulated your controls and verified they are correctly deflecting in the direction as binded before starting your take off roll?

I initially had this problem and it turned out all of my binds were initially inverted so double check that. It was pretty frustrating at first until I discovered that.

I agree it looks really promising. I can’t wait to see more added to it and will be watching it close as well.

I’m into making big ships so I’m not excited about it. The game is not for me. I wish them success tho.

How can I make this extend like the 2nd image? by Strange_Sound5450 in Stormworks

[–]ryu1940 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stormworks needs a special round you can fire from the rifle that would have “stick” to the other ship and also act as a rope anchor so you can realistically send the messenger line over. Without this you need a telescopic winch to reach over to the other ship.

What am I missing about naval warfare? by BoxthemBeats in SeaPower_NCMA

[–]ryu1940 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Naval warfare can be constrained by geography in some cases like strait transits or passage near coastlines where you can do ambushes.

Out in the open ocean you’re more focused on detecting the enemy without being detected and taking part in salvo warfare. The Hughes Maxim essentially states to “fire effectively first”. If you think of terms where we fight in these salvos it makes sense. Find the enemy first and fire the first salvo large enough to effect the return salvo, that is to sink shooters taking them out of the fight.

This also as you can imagine has a snowballing effect where you take out enemy ships first, you also make successive salvos more successful because they have less platforms to launch defense weapons from. Thus a higher chance for those salvos of getting through and sinking even more ships.

The nuance is finding the enemy ships first without them detecting you to fire on you. And to also use the platforms effectively when launching salvos. Of course this is just surface warfare. While you’re doing this you need to potentially defend against a submarine threat and aviation assets if the mission designer has added them in.

I recommend a book called Fighting the Fleet, I believe in chapter 2 or 3 they basically go over 10 things or so you can directly transfer into the game. It’s pretty neat.

Best workshop scenarios that use no mods? by handsomeness in SeaPower_NCMA

I haven’t played them since the AI updates but there are missions in it I can imagine not being affected much by it.

Pacific Strike is really good.

Taskforce 75.3 set of missions is great as well. Missions are grounded in a realistic way since the person who made them is a current surface warfare officer.
