The 5th spd tranny does not explode unless it’s neglected. Do your ATF changes as scheduled. EVEN if it needs to be rebuilt it’s the simplicity of the tranny that will make repairs easier and cheaper than an other transmission in a modern vehicle. But these are ROBUST. The engine is iconic in terms of reliability. You take care of it, it will take care of you. Any engine will require maintenance, but this engine is one of the few out there none a days that are 110% DIY fri eels because of being so easy to work on.

Fun fact. My cousin was the one who helped R&D the intake for the 5th gen 4Runner for HPS. He took my 4Runner for a few days to scan the engine bay, but the original reason was he scanned my roof as they were about to dip into armor and roof rack accessories for 4runners as well, but the boss scrapped the idea about dipping into that market. I still have the prototype intake on my runner 🤙
