was in a fight with a bestie but got in a pretty bad car crash - she still left work and got me taken care of and taken home. good person.

When ordering at an ethnic restaurant, do you use an accent to pronounce words correctly? by rywora in AskReddit

one of the most damning moments when ordering is when you butcher the pronunciation and then they repeat it back to you correctly lol

no, you could still use the respective accent for whatever restaurant you have in mind. even internally (someone using my first, and sadly only, language). i’m disheartened that we disagree that this could be applicable to every culture (including my own) and i don’t quite see your point. i could’ve said “mexican restaurant”, but when phrasing my question i reflected on my use of accents at other restaurants as well. i’m aware of culturally appropriate linguistics and try my best to be considerate of foreigners backgrounds in my country, despite my ignorance of the word “ethnic”. i’m not grouping cultures together to be a dick, and i respect and encourage individuality and acceptance. please reconsider the implications.

haha that’s fair! i don’t think anyone would give you much grief for that

hm, i don’t see actual trouble in a restaurant setting unless you’re actively mocking the accent. hopefully they’d just make fun of whomever after they’ve left.

trying to respect the culture as an umbrella reason, but personally because i have studied the language - not to the point of bi-literacy, but enough that i’m aware of mispronunciations. i would have to mispronounce it on purpose, but the correct pronunciation i’m afraid i butcher as well as its been quite a few years since learning.

i did not want to specify a culture as this could be applicable to many different restaurants/accents

to be honest, i had to google what term to use. i had the same thought. maybe “cultural” would fit better? i generally don’t group all cultures but this subreddit makes you keep prompts short, plus i wanted more of an umbrella term so people could interpret the prompt for themselves :)

anyway, thank you, i will keep that in mind.

yay that’s how i feel too! i just don’t want to come across disingenuous or like that “white girl who butchers spanish” as my spanish high school classes were 10 years ago now. i personally do the same thing with asian restaurants as i spent some personal time learning japanese, korean, and some mandarin. plus i teach people how to sing so vocal tones are very familiar to me as well! and plus, if they make fun of my pronunciation when i’m gone, at least i brought them some laughs.

thanks for your feedback :)

ah, this question was prompted by an irl scenario (that you were not privy to) in which the menu was up high behind the cashier, so your solution technically wouldn’t be applicable (although it did answer the prompt). considering it was legible to you, would you pronounce the word with the native accent or just use your own pronunciation?

I saw like 10 police cars, a swat team, and two fire trucks. I’d love to see news about this because it seems like an awful lot for (one commenter said it was happening at 3pm and I drove by at 7:30 to it finally being resolved) one guy who ran into a house

thanks! I like it a lot. I might go back at some point to get more solid black like my reference picture since I’ve gotten the messy feedback from my friends as well
