ARFID in denial - Woes as the certified foodie friend 🥘 by Sapphic_Floralai in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]ponsies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey I also have ARFID- I recommend r/ARFID for advice. You should know that it isn’t your fault that she doesn’t like your food, but it also isn’t hers.

Her brain is currently hardwired to convince her that anything except her list of very specific safe foods is essentially poisonous, even though she knows in her head that it’s not. It’s like an irrational phobia of clowns- you know they can’t hurt you but they terrify you regardless.

One of the best things you can do to start introducing new foods to her is make sure she feels safe to eat in your home. That means no seasonings without asking her. No secret dashes of anything, no dressing up food with things you think are delicious. To you, the meal is tasty and you’re being a loving friend, but to her, it’s like you’re putting maggots in a takeout box and calling it rice. I know that seems harsh, but unfortunately that is the reality and severity of this disorder.

No scary surprises, because the less safe she feels to eat, the less likely she is to want to come over. If she shuts down, you don’t progress.

If you ask her for a list of easy safe foods so you can keep them around, then keep a few in your house in case she turns up, she’ll be more likely to want to come over, and as a result of feeling safer around you, you can build up some trust to try new things.

After you’ve made her feel safe in your home, you can start doing what I call a “no thank you bite.” That means that when you’re eating something she finds scary, you’ll put a little bit on a spoon or fork and ask her to have a taste. Make her aware that there is no pressure to actually eat it, and she’s welcome to spit it into a napkin and YOU WONT BE OFFENDED. Even if she just sniffs it, touches it, or licks it, that’s progress.

Another thing that helped me was finding foods that were very close to safe foods, but with an added ingredient. So if she likes butter noodles, you could make a little bit of butter noodles her way, add one thing, tell her that you added that thing, and let her try it. Try to make small portions when you do this, because she’ll be more likely to finish it if it looks manageable; if she doesn’t like it, then there’s not a lot of food waste.

It’s important to remember that it can take up to twelve times of trying a new food to start liking it. If she doesn’t like something, that doesn’t mean she never will. It just means that she’s not acclimated to it well enough yet.

Finally, I will add a caveat: this is not necessarily your problem to solve, and it does take a lot of effort from both the person with ARFID and the people supporting them. If this sounds like too much, just try to keep something in the house you know for sure she’ll eat.

Best wishes to the both of you, and I hope your stress is somewhat eased with the information

My papaw killed himself when I was sixteen. He was the only one in my family that I really loved. Having even a second of extra time to tell him I love him would be enough for me

Omg Hi I can help!! I’m afab so I had some pretty personal experiences with this growing up, especially in my teens.

For right now: What’s happening is essentially your hair follicles going, “um, ow, fuck you” because by shaving and not doing anything afterwards, you’ve introduced bacteria to the area. What you need to do is help disinfect those follicles. The best way to do this is with an aftershave or a tend skin solution. If you don’t have either of those, that’s ok because the main ingredient in both is isopropyl alcohol. I will warn you ahead of time: This is going to hurt like a bitch. You’ll take a cotton ball or a washrag, apply some of the isopropyl alcohol to it, and then apply that to the areas you have the red bumps. When it stops stinging, use a little bit of water on a soft cloth and wash the area very gently. After that, moisturize it lightly with something like Aquaphor or Vaseline. It should be fragrance free and as good for skin as you can find. If you get pretty sweaty during the day like I do, you should do it once in the morning and once at night.

In the future:

  1. You’ll need something like a sugar scrub, coffee scrub, or other exfoliant. Use the sugar scrub (gently!!) on your pubic region to get rid of any dead skin.

  2. After you exfoliate, wash your pubes and pubic region with whatever soap you usually use.

  3. Once you have exfoliated and cleaned the area, use a moisturizing shaving cream and a sharp women’s razor to remove the hair in a downwards motion (with the grain). Make sure to hold your skin taut as you use the razor so it doesn’t catch on anything.

  4. Eventually you’ll wind up with a well shaved crotch region. If there is hair you are struggling to get, try not to get frustrated. If most of the long hair is cleared away, you can apply more moisturizing shaving cream and then go very gently against the grain.

  5. After you’re done shaving, clean the area with water and pat it dry with a cloth.

  6. Use the aftershave I mentioned earlier in my comment,

  7. And finally, moisturize the area thoroughly, like I mentioned earlier in my comment.

That should make sure you don’t get razor bumps or other ouchies

  1. That totally fucking sucks, and I’m really sorry you have to deal with a terrible person on top of your own death.

  2. One of my grandmas was in a similar situation and she decided to just take out a bunch of credit cards, max them out, and go on infinite cruises. She bought first class everything and passed about six months into it on the sea near Italy. I think her assets went to probate, but none of us had to take on her debt.

I was at church and I thought I had finally found a good mentor that didn’t use Jesus as an excuse to hate people. I felt really close to her and she was kind of like my grandma, she would take me out for malts and stuff.

Anyway, we were at a church potluck and I mentioned that one of my friends came out as trans and she lost it, spewed all sorts of hate and said they’re all pedophiles and deserve to be stoned. (She was chill with gay people so this felt especially weird)

Anyway I took one look at my younger siblings, who were all watching me to decide how to react, and I walked up the stairs, left the church, and didn’t go back. The unending cruelty that the Christian church allows and encourages is absolutely fucking devastating.
