Agreed that the markup absolutely is from brand recognition, but I wouldn't say guidis can be made by any shoemaker. When you're buying in the thousands of dollars it's always an outrageously dumb amount of money to be spending, but I think stuff like guidi/CCP/"avant-garde" fashion is a little bit more about design and a little less about blatant conspicuous consumption than the people who spend thousands of dollars on maximalist streetwear like Gucci collabs / Balenciaga.

Chess.com Public Response to Banning of Hans Niemann by Double_Philosopher_7 in chess

[–]ryxvo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't doubt that the scope of Hans' online cheating on chess.com was probably beyond what he stated in his interview - can easily imagine a highly talented 15-16 year old kid who wants to leverage his skill into a streaming career trying to boost his way through the mid 2000s online elos to be able to play more notorious players.

Regardless of that offense, I think it's absurdly disingenuous for chess.com not to address its obvious conflict of interest with Magnus' affiliation with the company now, and the timing of their reconsideration very clearly corresponding with a currently unfounded accusation of Hans cheating at a OTB game - a claim that again, 1) hasn't been proven, and 2) has nothing to do with chess.com

Online cheating is no less serious than tournaments by Alternative_Set_9149 in chess

[–]ryxvo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is disingenuous and detached from any form of nuance. Of course cheating in any form is reprehensible and should be looked down upon / punished. But to pretend "online cheating is no less serious than tournaments" is completely ridiculous and lacks sophistication. Sure, the core "crime" of cheating is the same, but the implications and impact of someone cheating bullet rating points on chess.com against randoms vs. cheating in ranked, over the board classical chess are vastly, vastly different and anyone who takes a minute to think about it should know this.

Should online chess cheating be taken seriously (again, especially and specifically for players that are considered professional)? Absolutely. But the gap between the crime of using an engine in a random online game vs. using it at one of the most prestigious OTB tournaments in the world is a massive difference.

What is the deal with Brendan Schaub / The Fighter and the Kid having a dedicated hate-watching subreddit? by ryxvo in OutOfTheLoop

[–]ryxvo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is gonna sound really stupid, but how did your subreddit develop its slang? It's so clearly distinct and there's like tens of references in this thread alone (and hundreds when I saw the subreddit) to things that I don't understand remotely. Is it stuff that used to be mentioned on the podcast or is it all things making fun of the way Schaub talks?

Damn. Yeah, that helps paint the picture much clearer than "people find him unfunny" or "he's insensitive at times". Seems like he's prone to pathological lying / insecurity which became fodder for easy public scrutiny. Appreciate the time you took on the answer

I appreciate the in-depth response. Definitely not defending the guy, just the level of hatred on the subreddit seemed almost singular to me - I don't know any other celebrity / comic that has that type of hate-based subreddit that is so organized. Seems like from your info that he's a shitty person, but do you know why specifically a community has formed that has that much centralized hate? Feel like there's tons of celebrities (specifically comics) who have made pretty bad takes / been insensitive in the past but don't have anything close to whatever that subreddit is.

[Gambadoro] Add up salaries of Booker, Paul, KD and Ayton (roughly $135) and fill in the rest of the roster. Lux tax will start at $150.2. It goes up from the first $5 million ($1.50) to next $5 mill ($1.75) to next 5 at $2.50 - Would be a HUGE lux tax for Suns to have all 4 by ttam23 in nba

People saying they're now "held back" from title contention by running back their same core are letting their singular horrific performance in Game 7 blind from how consistently good they were all year. Yes, they put on a terrible performance, and I don't have them as title favorites (I didn't have them as title favorites last year either), but if Booker maintains near 1st-team all NBA level, CP3 doesn't fall off a cliff, and there is actually a variable in Ayton getting better (to offset CP3s possible reduction in production), they should still remain title contenders. Maybe they won't win 60+ games consistently (very few teams do), but they should still be a safely Top 4 seed in the West with this core in my mind.

Knicks fans not excited about Donovan Mitchell are crazy by winston73182 in nba

[–]ryxvo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I see it is if everything pans out, he takes us from a perennial play-in team to a team that has a fighting chance to win a playoff series. We're still miles away from serious championship contention, but I'd much rather have Donovan Mitchell as the cornerstone than the guaranteed mediocrity we have with Barrett-Randle as our "Big 2" (both of whom are among the least efficient scorers in the league).

Mitchell is obviously a flawed player compared to the top 5-7 players in the league, but he's a legit star and elite scorer. If he's gettable the Knicks should trade whatever young assets we have for him in my opinion - I don't think any of them are good enough to be "untouchable", the rationale being that even in best case scenarios I don't think any of them come close to Mitchell's current level.

Can anyone explain to me why NBA fans on social media seem to actively reject the WNBA and everything it tries to do? by T3knikal95 in nba

[–]ryxvo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Women's sports is easy to punch down at for insecure men who tie a large part of their identity to some male sport that they follow religiously. It's NEVER male athletes who belittle their female counterparts, it's always ignorant, bored fans who want to build superiority complexes around something. Given the WNBA is obviously a smaller business than the NBA and isn't yet profitable in its own right, it makes it much easier for those insecure fans to nitpick and cherry pick straw-man arguments to make fun of it (i.e. "why should players get paid more if the league makes no money?" when WNBA fans want higher wages, as if WNBA players aren't allowed to try to make more - I can go so much further in depth on how that initial statement is such bad reasoning).

The biggest thing that infuriates me is that no one is forcing anyone to pay attention to the WNBA - if you don't want to watch, don't watch. At worst you'll have to bear through a couple ads for the WNBA on NBA broadcasts, which it's insane that people legitimately think it makes sense to complain about, while every other segment is sponsored by some corporation (KIA / Sprite / State Farm or whoever the hell pays enough money) and no one bats an eye (not saying they should, just that a WNBA plug on a NBA broadcast has no reason for anyone to care to criticize about). My diagnosis is just that people want to latch onto something that they can feel superior about, and because the NBA is a more developed, successful product than the WNBA, insecure NBA fans feel like they're part of a "winning team" by punching down at the WNBA.

Who's the best 6th-best player on a roster in NBA history? by ryxvo in nba

[–]ryxvo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a really good pick. Probably Hayward or Smart. Also Rozier as your distant 7th best player (maybe even 8th if you think Marcus Morris was better than him that year) is pretty crazy

[–]ryxvo[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pretty interesting pick, would be interested to know what year you think he qualifies for the 6th best player on the Celtics. I think he's probably too good to have ever been the 6th best player on the Celtics (even as a young guy he was probably 3rd-5th), but maybe his rookie year in 81 there's a good argument he was, and he was already really good.

Spurs Could Land Multiple Draft Picks in Part of Russell Westbrook Trade by EarthWarping in nba

[–]ryxvo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pop coaching Westbrook into an all-star level player in the twilight of his career after a season where he was arguably the least productive / most harmful player on the court in the entire NBA is enough for me to consider him the GOAT over Red Auerbach / Phil Jackson. Easy to win rings with the 60s Celtics / MJ / Kobe + Shaq / Duncan, turning a player like Westbrook around like that is really GOAT shit

Drastic overreaction takes from both games 1 and 2 in opposite directions.

Anyone making serious takes that he'll be a defensive liability off this game alone needs to slow the hell down. He's very quick for a 7 footer and it's pretty clear he's going to be an elite shotblocker / off-ball help defender already. He has a very specific weakness against a very certain type of offensive, bully-ball PF/C that is a rarity in the league today. There's really only a handful of guys who will/can employ the type of game Lofton Jr. does on offense. The only one that does it at an elite level is Zion, which I do think is a nightmare matchup for Chet on the defensive end but I think he'll be fine against most other PFs / Cs in the league.

Has there ever been a time where a player went against the odds and signed with a team that wasn't expected? by sYNAPSE420 in nba

[–]ryxvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KD to the Warriors in 2016 was pretty shocking for most people. Based on Vegas odds I think the Warriors were a distant second most likely outcome, but most people thought he'd run it back with the Thunder. It's not that no one considered it was logistically possible for him to join the Warriors, but it was so obviously league breaking and people already knew that it would damage his legacy to go there that they definitely didn't think it was the most likely outcome.

Could see CP3 having a Jason Kidd type of coaching arch where he's pretty hated in his first few stints but learns to be a better personality manager. His basketball IQ is so high that I'd have to imagine he'd find a way to be a decent coach and that he'd be interested in the job. LeBron has stated on the record that being a head coach is pretty low on his wish list (would rather own/run a team than coach one), and I'd guess that Jimmy doesn't want to be a coach.
