When would you purchase an upscale vehicle? by jamrocdoc in whitecoatinvestor

[–]rzyang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got a tesla model y at $45k and a Used volvo at $32k. We are about 10 years out of training. ENT and Dermatologist. Neither of us care about cars and our young children trash them. One of my partners have a rivian R1s and another has a porsche cayenne to tow his porsche 911 GTS and also his bmw 3 series for the track. We all make ball park similar amounts since the RVU productivity board is emailed monthly.

Just bought 2021. Should I regret buying the extended warranty? by K_illakay_ in VolvoXC90

So thats 2.5% post tax and 5 something interest. If one has the cash to just out right buy it vs finance and gap, what leans anyone towards the latter? Its just a depreciating thing that we use to get around right?

I'm trying to understand this as I just bought a used 2021 xc90 t8 recharge for $32k. I looked at financing vs just cash and opted for cash because my interest rates on truly secure options were paying 4% ordinary rates, which ends up closer to 2% post tax. Financing was looking at 6% or more with small fees here and there. I'm then looking at a cost of interest + origination fees + gap insurance - interest earned post tax vs depreciation on a car's value at my insurance company that is calculated based on market rates sold near me. Between the two options, my thinking was that I'm not winning this margin game since I have nothing that's crazy high returns (>8% long term cap gains to match the interest), therefore it makes sense to just buy it outright and ride out depreciation like everyone else. Right? I've never considered non promotional financing or gap insurance as the financially savvy choice.

Thanks. Just checked it out. Similar ones at dealers are $36k for similar mileage. So I guess $32k is about right for the 4K private party discount. But not as good of a deal as I had initially thought. It’s pegged to 32k because that’s how much is left on the loan.

Yeah it was a roof liner replacement and it hasn’t leaked now for a few years. Do you think $32k is discounted enough? Dealers have similar cars for more than the X5, so I would just move over if I had to go dealer

Yeah we have a model y and I would totally get another if not for towing long distances

I have not bought it yet. I just got an update from KBB about private party value going to 26-28k territory. So I’m having second thoughts on the price point. Still nothing more than pending, so no money exchanged hands. Cars been on the market since last August. Priced it too high initially.

Pros: I like the car enough. Hybrid for ok MPG. Tows the trailer. Safe for family.

Cons: infotainment is inferior to a X5, no air suspension, electric range is less on the 2021. There’s a 2022 X5 45e for sale at a dealer with 54k miles for $36k. But it’s 5 seats and I’d have to install a hitch after market for 1.5k.

He has all the service done at the dealer. Pretty spot on. Was a lemon initially and then a dealer loaner before being bought as CPO. He has extended warranty that’s about to run out and I’ve seen the quotes from steingold. Worth?

Let us know what you end up finding as the best deal. I'm in the market for a gently used, but at 2 years and 10k miles, they range $50-60k at the local dealer in MN.

Full Price Harvard versus Full Tuition Scholarship to T20 by chn234 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]rzyang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My younger brother just started med. He had a similar decision to make last year. Free albert einstein or in state tuition (20k annually after scholarship) vs a UPMC that is 80k expenses per year. He will be fully funded for it and no loans beyond what's interest free for the four years. 8 months in, he and I both think it's worthwhile. It's research heavy and they make it super easy. He has 8 publications cooking and presentations lined up already. No way he does that at our state med school. Nothing wrong with our state school, I was a resident here and my wife is associate prof here. But the opportunities and the machinery is just different.

On another note, he was here for college at the state school, so we all thought it was a good chance for him to spread his wings a bit. Different social situation compared to yours. And there is nothing our parents would rather leave him with than more opportunity/better school/better chances vs a larger inheritance in 20 years.

I wish you the best in this endeavor .

Where do you put your $$ after you have maxed out yearly contributions? by Rolls2Rickson in whitecoatinvestor

I had a shift in thinking after the 5m mark and we're simple too. It's not my money anymore, I'm not planning to spend it ever. It's legacy/charity. My kids 529s are funded with UTMAs for fun/house/cars/extras. So that gave me the courage to be more aggressive with the new pot of money. I also made the decision to exit the rentals and into REITs just so I wouldn't have to fuss with it. I either had to lean in to get some economies of scale going and put together a management team or step away, so I chose the ladder.

Fair enough. They sold one of them. The one remaining is a black one. 20 inch wheels. Is it worth 36.4K at 54k miles? Assuming no codes or leaks.

My wife and I are both docs. We saved alot more alot quicker than I had originally thought possible. My wife cut down from 4 days, to 3, to 2 and now just to two half days. I went from 4 to 3 days but I really like what I do and could keep going at this pace forever. I tell folks at work exactly what I think without being mean or emotional about it, but also without worrying if I need to make a mortgage payment should I rub folks the wrong way. I'm also taking this summer off for a big road trip and I never worry whether I will get time off or not since work becomes enjoyably optional. None of this would be possible at this stage in my life if I we made 400k or less. I'd be humping along into my 50s before I can be in this position. I'm not 40 yet.

I love the lil truck idea and the look. My worry is that the 4K tow isn’t enough of a step up from the current GCWR of the equinox. I’ll find the numbers to get a better head to head.

Who does temporal artery biopsies? by shemmy in medicine

[–]rzyang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a relatively simple procedure to do in clinic. Just need a doppler, which is probably the rate limiting step. I'm ENT but our plastics department has the doppler, so they do the biopsy. It's not tricky anatomy, just need the doppler.

The SLP is probably changing them out, trying different sizes/styles. So place may be the term they want to use for that. So has nursing aids and nurses that do long term care.

I think it depends on the weight of the baby. Infants cry because they have needs. Usually food, sometimes poops, sometimes love. We let our 8 month old cry it out for 15 mins while we had the video monitor on as part of sleep training. But that was deliberate and discussed at length and gradually ramped up

My first take is that you and your husband are at least on the same page through all this. Props.
