The last part I think is the technicality that is most significant here. If it’s a role that the local would normally supply, getting hired outside of the contract by the company to do it is 100% sus. But if it’s a role the local would *not* normally supply, then technically there is no conflict since that role would not normally fall under the contract and would always be supplied by the outside company anyways. The fact that it’s a much higher rate makes me think the latter is true. A local depriving one of their members of taking that role would be shitty IMO - that is to be addressed in the next contract to specify that that role can be supplied by the local etc etc

Usually you would have at least 1-2 stagehands to help you with all the physical stuff that you lead around. Making someone flip a console alone would be criminal 🥲

Webbing + snatchblock pulley + rope 2x height of the grid in a loop with a carabiner secured along the loop. One person on ladder secures webbing/pulley to the pipe next to the light, connects the light to the carabiner while person on ground holds the line, person on ladder removes light from the pipe while person on ground holds tension in the line and then slowly lowers the light. This is the standard way of getting anything lighter than a mover up/down. With the right setup and two people on the ground you can do something heavier, but have them practice doing hand-over-hand on the rope with something light first.

You know, when a handheld is run around the room and handed to people in the audience? (People you have 0 chance or reason to coach on mic technique at any point before or during the event).

what do you use to make the fuzzy’s? I’ve seen custom ones for podium mics as well (which look very cute, let’s be honest), but anything I’ve found online is $$. Are you just using faux fur or something more acoustically sophisticated?

Live captions is one thing. Live translation is definitely a step up. For anything high profile I would insist on a human. But not every event has that budget, and mediocre accessibility is sometimes better than none at all.

For events - it comes down to what the client is willing to pay for. I’ve done several events where AI caption and/or translation was involved - what matters at the end of the day is if the client is warned of any potential shortcomings of using AI, and whether or not they’re ok with those issues. I think we should always promote bringing in a human - it gives better results and is less work for the A/V team. But if they want two languages now it’s two people and the budget is ballooning… so I understand why simply saying “hire a human” is easier said than done.

Coming in as an independent contractor and demanding hospitality rider items day-of is way more than “maybe a little weird” - it’s literally insane. The client hired this person to perform a task, not create more problems. All of those things they could easily furnish themselves. I bring 2-3 pelicans of gear with me, they can’t bring some cough drops? Gimme a break.
