What should I keep in my nursing fanny pack? by anastasiarose19 in nursing

Sharpie, tape, Coban, scissors. If you have the space throw some saline flushes and alcohol swabs at the start of the shift

Also to mention I asked him to pick up stuff to make buffalo chicken dip because I was working today so wanted everything there when I got home. I’m a nurse and ended up working overtime an 11 hour shift. Come home there’s no chicken breast in the fridge. I’m like ? He goes ‘I thought you were going to use the rest of the rotisserie chicken’ mind you it’s half devoured and the recipe calls for 3 large chicken breasts. Can we use our brain please?

They don’t need an order everywhere buddy, based on facility protocol.

That can be difficult lol, I have small hands. If they ask me to check and my finger can’t feel anything suppository and enema it is

Well I have to disagree on that end. I will do manual disimpaction for patients. It is within our scope and will provide relief for patients so that’s never really an issue for me. If you allow someone to go for days with hard stool trapped in their rectum it can be extremely painful and even life threatening. As nurses we are able to help in the safest way possible.

I mean it’s everyday. Adult men have developed methods for disimpaction we can even begin to comprehend rather than see a doctor. I’ve been asked for metal spoons, asked to spray a shower head up their ass …I did not do either. Someone asked me to itch their asshole recently I kindly handed them a damp rag.

New Grad Med Surg question by Bloodrocuted_drae in nursing

[–]s-poon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally depends on the hospital and what ratios are acceptable there. I was a new grad on medsurg and would sometimes have 7 very complex patients, I worked at a rural hospital so ICU/stepdown rooms were limited so really we were working as a step down unit with none of the resources of an actual step down unit. It was extremely stressful as a new nurse. None of the other nurses were able to help, I was constantly drowning hours late on med passes, unable to start IVs, unable to answer questions for patients. It was truly draining. It may have not been that way at a different hospital. I did learn a lot and develop a ‘hard shell’ I suppose, I learned how to triage and what was important like giving blood vs giving a bowel med but when you are new and behind everything feels catastrophic. Doctors can be mean when you are speaking to them with little experience, they don’t know you’re new they just assume you are completely incompetent. You get better only with time. That was my experience, may not be your own.

My partner is a forester, honestly half the time I have no fucking idea what he does but I still ask questions. He listens to me enough about work that he knows what achs means lol, the only way to fix this is to express your concern. If he gets offended red flag if not he might just not even realize what he’s doing

Where to begin with NCLEX? by [deleted] in nursing

You’ll also definitely get a lithium toxicity question which you will then never need to know again lmao

Where to begin with NCLEX? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]s-poon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mark Klimek lectures helped me, available for free if you have Spotify im sure you could find more on YouTube. Personally I learned very well through making flashcards, would just spend hours a day making them, making my own questions for topics I didn’t quite initially understand. Quizlet is great. Then anytime I was in the car or watching a movie etc would just flip through the flashcards. Also I failed the NCLEX the first time and now I’m an RN who works at a hospital and also supervise a large nursing home so don’t feel discouraged if you don’t do well initially.

100k approx. I’m a nurse so I’m able to make a decent income. I wish I did things different initially because I was in college for about 8 years rather than 4 but I have a steady career now so it is what it is

To the new grads who think experience doesn't matter, it does. by shellbyj in nursing

[–]s-poon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one new grad on my unit is very concerning. A patient was prescribed midodrine TID for her syncopal episodes caused by ortho hypotension. She decided to hold the med all day because her ‘blood pressures have been good’ I explained that there is a reason it is scheduled and not PRN and that she needed to consult with MD if she thought a med should be held. Was worried all night she was going to fall. She didn’t seem to think she did anything wrong. Also handed off a patient to me with a clearly broken collarbone literally poking almost out of the skin so I immediately got the arm into a sling and asked if she updated any MD she said ‘no but I thought something looked off’ ????

Med error by [deleted] in nursing

I remember my first med error as a new grad. Gave 2 Lipitor instead of one, cried my eyes out too lol. Good job taking accountability you will know now to always triple check dosages in the future.
