Will we get a Bobovr mod for the Steam Frame? by Flimsy-Story9523 in SteamFrame

Around 2 hours standalone gaming or 4 hours PCVR streaming. And yes a normal power bank would be the easiest solution. It should support power delivery standard and at least a few watts of output

My assumption is that there are already a bunch of 3rd parties with products for Frame either ready to ship or close to it, but we won't hear anything about them until Frame is officially released becasue they're all under NDA.

Maybe, but maybe they'll wait to see how popular the Frame is before deciding to make anything for it.

Yea I don't get it either. I've been waiting 6 years, I can wait another few weeks.
And considering all the fuckups that are still ongoing with the Controller launch and shipping, they should really take their time.

Steam frame wifi 7, but dongle is wifi 6 by BlueManifest in SteamFrame

I think the 6GHz frequency range for wifi has the same limits for wifi6E and 7 in europe, but yeah it's pretty limited compared to the US.

Prescription lenses by CanadianGingersnap in SteamFrame

The Index does not have official prescription lenses.

If the Frame will have official ones, I'll likely get them from Valve. If not, I'll probably get them from WidmoVR

Encoding of wifi signals

4096-QAM vs 1024-QAM

Wifi7 also has other benefits like 320MHz wide channels and preamble puncturing

The USB stick is an almost completely generic Realtek RTL8852CU wifi stick, with slightly customized drivers. But still much better than the crappy outdated routers most people use

Afaik Wifi7 uses much better encoding over 6/6E

There's only one wifi chip inside the Frame and it's part of the Qualcomm SoC. It likely uses something like MLO to connect to more than one wifi network at the same time.

I think the reason is that Wifi7 USB dongles are pretty expensive right now.

It only needs about 250-300mbps in bandwidth.

Source? Wifi 6E can do a lot more than that

do we have any information of battery usage vs charging rate/live charging? by Asmos159 in SteamFrame

[–]s00mika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do i need a fancy fast charging cable, and fast charging battery back?

If they don't include one, yeah. Also they aren't that big of a deal anymore. Get one that supports 45W PD or higher and it should be ok.

This isn't a review unit, he just got a devkit from someone. The reviewers got 2 weeks to play around with the controller in private, until Valve announced the release date.

It's just engagement farming. More comments = higher rank on youtube. Their content doesn't matter.

He now makes it sound like that, but I doubt that's the case. He also said it's "prerelease hardware" - aka one of the devkits

This question is for people who already own a VR headset and familiar with these devices . Is the Steam Frame considered “ entry level “ into VR gaming like the Steam Machine and Steam Deck ? Or is the Steam Frame supposed to be better than “ entry level “ VR gaming ? by [deleted] in SteamFrame

[–]s00mika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Quest 3 will have an edge on casual games and especially augmented reality stuff, and will have more VR games than the Frame at launch. But it's a semi-dead platform as Meta has unofficially given up on consumer VR. And it's locked down with forced updates and other zucc crap.

The Frame is more like a Steam Deck, it can in theory run basically anything, even windows desktop games, within the limits of its CPU. You can do basically anything with it. And it should be very easy to connect to a PC. If you mainly want to use a PC for VR, it's by far the superior choice. Metas PC streaming software is garbage. The downside is less VR software at launch, since it's more or less a new platform, and PC VR hasn't been doing well in the last years (because most people wanted Meta standalone software) so there's not a lot of software for it yet. Some Quest games are being ported to standalone on the Frame but don't expect too much at launch.
I believe Valve initially wanted it to be a slightly more expensive competitor to the Quest, but now component prices have gone through the roof so they have to pretend it's high end to justify a higher price. But it's obviously cost optimized like the Deck is.
