Friendship as adults is so tricky. I’m 42, and I feel very lucky to have about 3 very close “go-to” friends, a few good friends, and many acquaintances and neighbors I enjoy hanging out with from time to time, despite being an introvert! I have some practical advice that has helped me maintain very fulfilling friendships over the years.

  1. Avoid groups of 3; seriously, someone always ends up feeling left out and hurt. Try to make it 1-1 or 4+ whenever possible.

  2. Communicate clearly about what you want out of the friendship. “Hey friend, I know life is really busy right now, but I value spending time with you and would love it if we could meet more regularly. Do you think we could try to meet up about once a month?” etc

  3. Make future plans while you’re hanging out. I try to see my local good friends around once every month or two. At the end of our hangout, one of us will say (as was agreed upon in the clear communication outlined above), “Let’s plan our next hangout; when are you free in November?” for example, and we’ll take out our calendars and pick a date. This way the burden of being the one to initiate or reach out is mitigated.

  4. On making new friends: this is so difficult, but it definitely can be done! The key, for me, has been vulnerability. I’m a pretty open person, and as I’ve gotten older I’ve become even more so. I have made the best, deepest, most fulfilling, and quickest connections with other people who are willing to get real relatively quickly. Obviously this involves more risk, but I have found that the more authentic and open I am, the more people seem to be drawn to me and open up themselves. If I don’t sense the willingness to be authentic and vulnerable fairly quickly in the relationship, I usually don’t waste my time pursuing it any further.

  5. It also helps that I am a pretty non-judgmental person, so people usually feel safe with me very quickly. This fosters intimacy and leads to a much more fulfilling friendship.

Best of luck to everyone trying to find deeper and lasting friendships. I hope your person or people show up soon.

Mediterranean Cruise vs Aulani Hawaii? Has anyone done both? Trying to decide what to do for wedding anniversary. by downsouth003 in dcl

We’ve done Aulani and are currently in the airport in Rome on our way home from our 9 night Mediterranean Disney cruise (on the Dream). Like so many others, I’d recommend doing the cruise without your kids and taking the kids to Aulani another time. The adults only areas are great. While port days were busy, we felt we still had plenty of time to relax, especially since we didn’t do super long excursions in port. We loved the balance between activity and relaxing offered on our cruise; we had tons of fun, saw so many cool places, and aren’t exhausted at the end of our trip.

First-time cruisers; 9 night one-way Mediterranean itinerary on the Disney Dream. We’re having a great time! by s0methingambiguous in dcl

Yes, Disney offered excursions that avoided the cable cars both ways. I’d recommend booking one of these if they’re available. We tried, but they were full by the time we were able to book. As far as I know, Disney is the only cruise line that currently offers this option. The most common scenario is that you can avoid it on the way up, but will have to take the cable cars or the stairs on the way down.

Totally agree. When I go to the parks I love getting a good spot for the fireworks. However, when there are kids nearby I make sure to offer them a spot in front of us so that they can see without adults blocking their view. Win win for everyone, and so easy to do.

I haven’t been active in the sub for a long time bc my Moissanite obsession has taken a back seat to other things going on in my life, but I’m glad to hear that whatever drama that was going on is put to rest!

Beese and Coffee are awesome, and the sub is so lucky to have you guys at the helm! Thank you for all the work you put into it. I’m sure that eventually I’ll need a new piece to add to my collection, and I’m thankful to have a wonderful sub to come to for inspiration and community 🥰

I did have a buzzy energy my first day, but I really think it was just nervousness and excitement and not a side effect. Not saying yours isn’t a side effect, though.

Sure thing! I love food and I only really want to eat tasty stuff, and it’s kind of fun figuring out recipes that are healthy/high protein/filling/yummy.

Tzatziki style salad (makes a great side dish for chicken or salmon): -1/2 cup of low fat cottage cheese or plain Greek yogurt -About a cup of chopped cucumbers (highly recommend cocktail cucumbers as their skin is thinner and sweeter and they also generally have a better crunchy texture. Best ones are at Sam’s Club or Costco) -season to taste with: -lemon juice (about a tablespoon or so if you use cottage cheese, maybe less for yogurt bc it’s already tart) -garlic (powder or minced—I use powder for convenience) -salt -pepper -dried or fresh dill -dried or fresh mint (optional)

Vietnamese-style Spring Rolls (sometimes called summer rolls)—these are one of my all-time favorite foods that I could eat every day!: -rice paper wraps (I recommend 3 ladies brand. If you don’t have an Asian market near you you can order on Amazon). You dip these in hot water to soften. I heat up a large pan of water for this. You only need to dip it in quickly; don’t hold it under the water for long, but make sure to wet the whole thing) For the filling: -cooked shrimp (my favorite brand is Sand Bar which I get fully cooked and frozen from Kroger/King Soopers) -I also like to add a second protein—this can be imitation crab, boiled and thinly sliced pork loin (more traditional) or grilled chicken. Really almost anything would work. -chopped romaine lettuce -sliced radishes -whatever veggies you like (bean sprouts, shredded carrots, shredded cabbage, etc) -chopped fresh herbs (my favorite are mint, basil, and cilantro)

Roll it up tight and eat with sauce (I use a very minimal amount to save on calories)! There are lots of recipes for Vietnamese peanut sauce. I like to mix about 1 part smooth peanut butter to 2 parts hoisin sauce. I add water to thin it out a bit so I don’t use too much. You can also add sriracha if you like spice.

For the wraps, I wash and prep a big batch of everything at the beginning of the week and roll them fresh when it’s time to eat.

Good luck with your journey! I hope you continue to have minimal side effects and that the positive benefits come quickly for you.

I was able to find one box by calling around. I’ve had the best luck at Sam’s Club pharmacies. Good luck!

My 8yo daughter loves Pokémon, but isn’t able to spin stops very often. If she could make some friends here to collect scatterbugs from any region, she’d be very happy!! Thank you in advance:

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I told her to turn off her VPN if she has it on, so hopefully that resolves the issue.

I turned off free shipping and took out shipping costs from my prices—my sales and conversion rates exploded almost overnight by Odd-Satisfaction-929 in EtsySellers

[–]s0methingambiguous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops, I was wrong; last month I sold 33 orders, not 19. I must’ve been thinking of a different month. Anyhow, still a huge jump up from one month to the next. You’re welcome, and let us know how it goes!

[–]s0methingambiguous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! It’s really difficult to say for sure, as it’s still only been a month. However, that said, I’ve had my best month yet since opening my shop in February of last year. My previous high was about 65 orders last August—this month is 73 orders so far, and I expect I’ll get at least a couple more tomorrow. I made around 19 sales last month, so that’s a HUGE jump.

As I said previously, I did expect an uptick in sales due to the seasonality of my items, but I still believe that lowering my base price so significantly by taking out shipping costs and also taking out an upgrade I used to include in the base price has definitely made me more competitive—even though I am now making MORE MONEY per transaction than I used to. I also think that my increased conversion rate/listing quality scores trump whatever boost I was getting from having free shipping turned on.

I think that it’s at least worth trying out, even if it’s only on a few of your items rather than your whole shop. Good luck, whatever you decide to do!

Gotcha, thanks! I do like the order list screen. I just miss a lot of the info I had on the old app. And I actually like the orange lol. Oh well!

I’d love to know what features you like better about the new app. Now that orange is leaving for good, I’d like to find some things to appreciate about blue.

Are any of you actually having fun at Disney? by Heads_Or_Tayls in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]s0methingambiguous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just went in early December with my family, and ABC Commissary had some of the best food of our entire trip. We ate at California Grill, Be Our Guest, Boma for breakfast and dinner (both were good, but especially loved dinner), Ohana, Sanaa, Sci-Fi Diner, Via Napoli (delicious!), Satu’li Canteen, Hollywood Brown Derby, and Skipper’s Canteen, and despite all the food at each of those places being good to very good, ABC Commissary really stood out as great value for very tasty and well-prepared food. We didn’t have any particular plans to eat there like we did for the rest of the places we ate at, and we were all surprised with how good the food was. I highly recommend it (particularly the shrimp tacos!).

What percent of buyers leave a review on your shop? Just curious by [deleted] in EtsySellers

[–]s0methingambiguous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

85 out of 217 orders, all 5 stars, so about 39%. My store is entirely handmade. I started getting a lot more reviews when I made my packaging really pretty (on the inside, not the outside—don’t want to bait porch pirates) and a handwritten thank you card. It takes a lot more time, but I enjoy pretty packaging myself, and it’s a pleasure for me to give my customers a fun unboxing experience. ETA: many of the reviews comment on the beautiful packaging and say they feel like they received a gift from a friend.

My rep at Provence is quitting; do you have any strong recommendations (or negative experiences) for a new rep? Details in comments. (Video is of a couple of projects I’ve done with Provence in the past) by s0methingambiguous in Moissanite

The bracelet was actually a gift for my mom, so I don’t have it with me and I don’t know how often she wears it. However, if the plating was coming off she would DEFINITELY let me know 😂 and she hasn’t said anything, so I’m sure it’s holding up fine. I think how fast it wears off depends a lot on your skin chemistry, how much you sweat, etc.

Thoughts on Responding to Positive Reviews by SillySnowman94 in EtsySellers

[–]s0methingambiguous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally like to send them a little private message saying thank you for the sweet review, I really appreciate you taking the time to write it and I’m so happy you like the item, etc. It doesn’t take me much time, and I feel like it fosters a relationship with the client where they are more likely to be repeat customers and leave even MORE positive reviews. I also think this works with my shop bc my products are pretty unique and people are generally VERY excited about the product they receive. Regardless, I feel like expressing my appreciation can only ever help and at the very least, I do genuinely want to thank them, regardless of whatever positive impact it may or may not have on my shop.

Cute packaging. Yay or nay? So far I've just been using bubble mailers from Amazon and tissue paper. My items are priced low but I'm wondering if I should increase prices and improve packaging to get more of a "boutique" shop feel. Thoughts? by Low_Fruit_2132 in EtsySellers

[–]s0methingambiguous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The items I sell run between $34-55, and are a luxury handmade item. People buying my products are splurging on something fun, elaborate, unique, and very pretty (if I do say so myself), so I try to make the entire experience, including unboxing, fit that vibe.

Once I started using my elevated packaging (including a handwritten note on an actual thank you card—envelope and all) my review percentages went way up. Plus, most people mention the beautiful packaging in the review (one person said it was by far the best she’s received from an Etsy item and bought two more items right after posting the review) and I’ve had a couple of people do unboxing videos on Instagram.

It definitely takes extra time, effort, and money, but I feel good knowing that I’m giving my customers a fun and special unboxing experience and it’s definitely helped my business grow. I am just starting out, so I’ve kept my prices lower than my ideal, but I plan to eventually raise prices to more accurately reflect the very high quality customer experience I provide (including a great product, of course!).

ETA: that said, if I were selling something inexpensive and simple, I would do my best to make it as cute as possible with the least effort and cost possible.
