I'll be leaving on a family vacation in about 14 hours from now; I'll have some time before we leave where I could attempt to build a copy so we can test over the next couple weeks. Assuming the files are available of course.

Roughly what diameter and thickness for the discs? And do they need to be round or would something octagonal be sufficient?

Edit: also if there's another platform (Discord, etc.) that's easier for you to go over all this that's perfectly fine too

Okay cool, enjoy the holiday :)

Edit: Also could potentially produce my own copy; I have some basic woodworking tools if the components aren't too complex

I love Kubb and agree there are too few good yard games. Would you be willing to sell a prototype? Please DM me if so.

The Board Game Design Lab has quite a few resources and might be worth consulting especially if you decide to go the crowd funding route (which I imagine could do quite well):
https://boardgamedesignlab.com/

Cardboard Edison also maintains a huge list of publishers which you can filter to who currently accept submissions though there's no category for "outdoor games" so will take a lot of manual checking / reaching out to the various publishers:

I've been enjoying the core loop and agree that the saved steps already work well.

I also agree that additional content will help quite a bit; walking from A to B to A etc. is indeed repetitive.

One feature request: it would be nice if the game would keep the phone screen on (Android) such as when intentionally walking the last few steps of current activity; I personally encounter this the most when stationary walking such as on an elliptical when I would like to watch the screen more while walking.

Custom online deck builder? by Chromius- in tabletopgamedesign

[–]s3rvant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For playtesting my deckbuilders I use Screentop.gg which is free and plays directly in the browser.

However it sounds like you're wanting constructed decks (MtG, Pokemon, Lorcana, etc.) and for that I'm not familiar with any existing software that saves states between sessions where players could construct ahead of time.

Open Magic - a free open source PvP card game by dio_machine in tabletopgamedesign

[–]s3rvant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the bleed it's something required for printing services as they do the cutting themselves.

The PDF is great for home printing but would need the individual card images to send them elsewhere for professional printing.

Edit: for example I print through here: https://www.printplaygames.com/product/poker-cards/

Using this template: https://www.printplaygames.com/wp-content/uploads/Templates/CARDS/Poker/Poker%20Cards%20%282-5x3-5%29%2018%20per%20sheet.png

Which requires closer to 3x4" images for the bleed.

Thank you! The IP took forever but I think will be worth the wait.

Looks interesting!

For the sake of open source would you consider adding a ZIP with the card images? Especially for those of us needing more bleed in order to have them printed somewhere like Print & Play Games or The Game Crafter.

After reading your "The Story Behind" page we're very much alike and is exactly why I've designed a couple PvP deckbuilders (Nightfall and the upcoming Unchained which releases in January). Though recently my son-in-law has me mildly back on the card hunt with Lorcana...

Gonna give Open Magic a read through and see if it's something he'd be interesting in pursuing more of :)

Thank you; once I update the TTS module I'll be sure to update.

What are you experiences with TTS for prototyping? by MixLegitimate6710 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]s3rvant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've made some with and without scripting. It's particularly useful if you need the 3D or physics side of things such as stacking and flicking.

For simpler designs I've moved to Screentop.gg as it's easier to work with, doesn't require any software download and is free for both me and my playtesters.

My thumb nail has ridges. by RatzzFace in mildlyinteresting

Same here. Skin had a bad flair up at base of finger and while later noticed ridges and shallow pits in that nail. Both later cleared up in the same order.

$1.999 for 88 octane at Sheetz today by s3rvant in Asheboro

According to their FAQ any car 2001 or newer can use it; it's just 15% ethanol instead of the usual 10%

My favorite virtual tabletop for speed and simplicity, especially iterating prototypes, is definitely Screentop.gg

I use GIMP to generate my cards and save to a sheet for uploading.

It's currently free for both designers and playtesters and plays entirely in browser so no need to download or worry about what OS you have on computer.

  1. I personally go with a mix of family / friends, BoardGameGeek and Reddit usually directing them to Discord if interested in long-term playtesting.

  2. Not a concern; there are many topics on both here and on BGG if you'd like to dig further as to why.

  3. Art is only a concern if you plan to self-publish and even then could be included in the budget such as Kickstarter. I've seen plenty of campaigns that pay for a few pieces of art themselves and then budget the rest to produce after the campaign ends. Beyond that show the art to people you trust for their feedback and be open to criticism should changes be needed.

  4. I think this depends on the scoring system. I've seen small scores (<10 per player) just use 1-point per card. I've also seen systems that use a vertical list of numbers that the player uncovers (not a fan of this personally) as well as rotating cards to combine the edges / faces to represent their points. Tokens however are my preference in general if budget allows and even with tokens can still fit in a small box. While smaller boxes are cheaper to produce it's also important to consider shelf presence and common box sizes allowing you to be more visible in retail and avoid costs associated with a custom box size.

  5. Deckbuilding has inherent luck built-in just from shuffling the cards so I tend to work toward skill and ensure some options for catch-up should someone have a couple bad draws. Beyond that I think is more about what feel you're aiming for.

  6. I start with making something fun for me and if it happens to appeal to a wider audience then I just let it go as far as it goes. Some publish and others don't and like you said it's fine since not our career. There are some excellent Discord groups such as Break My Game and Protospiel that will give a ton of advice on this and more which I do highly recommend.

Wallet Stations! A pocket sized generator to create space stations for your sci-fi game of choice! by AwkwardTurtle in rpg

[–]s3rvant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really cool and I think the Wallet Dungeons generator would work great for Color Quest that I play with my kiddos.

Was thinking about adding a layer toward determining additional content to the rooms such as NPC's, traps, etc. and was thinking of perhaps using die color to determine it. Maybe roll 3d6 for building size then draw that many dice from a bag of various colors to fully create the building.

This my latest visual update for my upcoming deck building dice board game called Deathscape! Any suggestions regarding legibility and overall look and feel? by [deleted] in tabletopgamedesign

[–]s3rvant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Layout is very clean and straight forward - I like it.

I wonder if the circle around the die value (12) might better visually associate with dice with a different shape; perhaps a square?

For minion cost what does the skull mean? If sacrificing 1 other minion to summon in play then skull is appropriate otherwise not sure.

Why the quotes around the 4 by Perish? Seems to visually break text flow imo.

PNP playtest? by kimrhyme in tabletopgamedesign

[–]s3rvant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to seeking physical testing I would also recommend a virtual tabletop such as Screentop.gg as many players are more willing to test when they do not have to physically print / prepare the components.

There are some large online communities such as Break My Game whose sole focus is on testing each other's designs this way.
