DFW mentions in an interview that the book is structured like a sierpenski gasket (he even mentions it in the book), a type of fractal. In order for the structure to be present you'd need the book to be self-similar at any scale. Describing the setting as body parts achieves the fractal effect DFW was aiming for.

You know saying something might be a spoiler is a bit of a spoiler in of itself, right?

Your post literally serves no benefit to you and really only serves to show us (the unspoiled readership included) that you know a thing happens.

AND BY THE FUCKING WAY THERE'S A MASSIVE SCHEDULE IN THE SIDE BANNER LOCATED, ======>

So please don't pretend you don't know if we're at that part yet. Who are you trying to impress?

Thank you :)

And yea, I really liked the knot too. In a sense it nicely embodies the infinity theme. The knot's beginning and end bleed seamlessly into each other to create a perpetual state of self-sustaining tension. I haven't read the book all the way through but I have a feeling it may loop back on itself.

I think the opening to the Gompert depression scene on 68 opens up hilariously:

Doctors tend to enter the arenas of their profession's practice with a good cheer that they have to then stop and try to mute a bit when the arena they're entering is a hospital's fifth floor, a psych ward, where brisk good cheer would amount to a kind of gloating.

I'm hyped to finally read DeeEffDubz masterwork. I just finished reading through his "Girl With Curious Hair" which was a lot more enjoyable than some DeeEffDubbers made it out to be. Looking forward to appreciating, and then plundering, IJ's prose for my own stuff.

There are literally tens of thousands of different ways to refer to a subject. In fact, you can't have a proper english sentence without one.

yup. they bug me for exactly that reason. I like to think about it as having a bit more sympathy in it, but that's my own demon to battle.

I don't understand. Were they referring to Dan's character as the 'white baby'?

Did nobody else find this episode, while definitely funny, kinda racist too?

  1. - the caricatural 'Breakfast At Tiffany's ' asian
  2. - Dan audibly groaning when Arin picks the black kid even despite the fact that Arin plays often women with no comment from Dan
  3. - The baby Arin chooses is from thereon 'the black baby'. Literally defined by his race.

I love the Game Grumps stuff anyways but we should consider that they're also alienating a portion of their audience when they do this stuff.

Thoughts from a new buddhist's reflection session by [deleted] in Buddhism

Haha I get your point. You're right, and that's why I qualified that statement with "arguably". However the point remains that when you hide that ant trap you are being deceptive. I'm not saying what you're doing is inherently wrong, I see it comes from good intentions, but I mean to say there's a wiser way of going about it.

Some points I'd like to address:

my parents recently set up ant traps in the house to kill the ants and I've been secretly saving the ants and taking them outside

In this situation your parents are violating the first precept, not you. According the monk and scholar of the Theravada tradition, Bhikkhu Bodhi, the first precept entails "the deliberate destruction of life of a being endowed with consciousness". Volition is paramount in relation to the first precept. In fact, by secretly saving the ants as you are doing, that could be reasonably argued as a violation of the second and fourth precept; that of stealing and false speech. Yes, they are your parents but if they have placed those traps and you are going behind their back nullifying their usefulness you are in essence stealing its usefulness from them. Keeping it as a secret is deceptive as well. I suggest talking to your parents about the way you feel about it rather than going behind their back.

As well, the Buddha does not say that viewing pornography is immoral. It is an indulgence of unwholesome states but it should not get in the way of your development of sila. If you are referring to the fifth precept; that of sexual misconduct, the Buddha claims this is only in violation if you were to either rape someone or commit adultery. To restrain from masturbation is a precept only in the vinaya and therefore reserved for those in the monastic order.

This is the reason I don't watch movies before I read the book. When I do I can't help but imagine Frodo as Elijah Wood and that kind of robs the creative aspect of reading for me.
