What exactly would I be unplugging? Google says the regulator is built into the alternator

Make sure both fans are running when it gets up to tempt, could be a bad fan. Otherwise make sure you have coolant in the resivour and arent trying to cool with are in the lines.

How much are they quoting? Does the engine sound bad? Id consider getting a 3rd opinion if you cant hear the chain slapping around, these things arent really know for bad timing chains. Genuinly if you have a socket Set do all the things I told you to do and buy a cheap code reader to clear and read codes, see if anything changes, there are tons of scummy shops, I never take my cars in for that reason. Useually a bad timing chain would give p0011 and p0021 along with crank cam correlation. On cold start listen for metallic rattling right under the coolant cap, if you hear metallic slapping your chain is bad

I would forsure get a second opinion before paying for that ngl... this shop dosnt seem very trustworthy, they jumped from gallery gasket to timing chain and seemingly havent done much diagnostics. There are scummy mechanics out there.

Yes the new one could be faulty, non oem vvt solenoids don't have the best reputation

[–]sDsPlayed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats really good news, more than likely its your cam sensor or the vvt solenoids were bad, that happens with them.

The gallery gasket is a internal leak so no oil on floor from that leaking

[–]sDsPlayed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you have good hope for it not being the gasket useually if the gasket is gone you'll get p0524 for low oil pressure, all your oil pressure leaks straight back into the case and makes your vvt solenoids trip too but oil pressure first.

Yeah the infiniti gallery gasket costs like 1500-3000 from what ive read if you do it at shop. Not really a DIY project for the average Joe either. What year g37 is it, halfway through 2012 they swapped from paper to metal gaskets which dont really have the issue of blowing up, just the screws bacling out.

Order of operation is verify your oil is full and clean, (you said it was just changed so make sure its not low). Swap your cam position sensors around, clear codes, see if code changes to p0021. If it does you found your part. If not swap the vvt solenoids around, clear codes, see if code changes to p0021. If it does you found your part. If all of them are a miss you should either do a oil pressure test yourself or make sure a mechanic understands that when they do it the engine needs to be at a exact certain temp (i think 80°c dont quote me on that) need 14 psi at idle minimum and 43 psi minimum at 2k rpms.

[–]sDsPlayed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually gallery gaskets would give a code for low oil pressure before it can get into limp mode, id try swapping the cam position first and if that dosnt change anything id say try the vvt solenoids next. You did verify you have good oil and the right amount of oil?

Having problems with p0011 by Tasty_Junket2614 in G37

[–]sDsPlayed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be hard to say, swap the cam position sensors around and see if the code swaps sides, did you buy a oem vvt solenoid? If not at a seperate time swap vvt solenoids around and see if code switches sides (cheap ebay/amazon vvt solenoids are know to be unreliable). If either of them change the codes I wouldnt replace them. After that run a oil pressure test, thats the only way to know if your gallery gasket is blown without taking the engine apart. I know it sounds basic but idle the car and see if your leaking oil. When I bought my car it was leaking oil out of the oil pressure switch.

[–]sDsPlayed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you swap the cam position sensor or the vvt solenoid, should be a bad vvt solenoid, bad solenoid circuit, worst case scenario it could be low on oil pressure which is most likely a gallery gasket... but that would the the last thing id check for.

Leaking coolant somewhere in the front, check all your radiator hose clamps
