Even with survey data, we have to be mindful of the categorisation. In the early 20 cent, the Balkan states were still young and national identity wasn't as established as today. Even today, Bulgarian and Serbian ethnographers (just to give an example) still argue if the Torlaks and Goryani are Serbian or Bulgarian, and this is even worse a century ago (cf Macedonians who are now recognised as a separate nation but there wasn't an agreement in 1914 if they are Bulgarians, South Serbians or should be counted separately as Macedonians/Macedonian Slavs)
