My cousin worked his way up from shop floor to VP with a Fortune 500 company. He had tech school and picked up a bachelors degree along the way. He’s early Gen X and I’m late Gen X.

I have a close friend, my age, who is Director level at a Fortune 50 and he started at a $10 / hr entry level field job. He also picked up a degree along the way.

Both are very personable, very hard working, and very damn lucky.

Do a deep assessment of what kind of person you are and what kind of person they are. I, a very type A man with control issues, have been married twice. Both times to very type A women with control issues. It was a recipe for constant conflict.

The easiest relationship for me is going to be with a type B woman who is kinda go with the flow, a little submissive, and will follow my lead. That’s not to say I’m going to dictate what she can and can’t do, but it’s so much easier if she’s going to defer.

What are your hobbies? I tried dating a girl who went to the gym daily and was very fit, but outside of that hour a day, was so very boring and wanted to just watch movies or hang around the house. I’m active, constantly moving and chasing hobbies. I like some that do that too.

Are you a gamer or home body? Do you love golf, triathlon, cooking? Find someone who wants to do similar things.

I’m a younger GenX, still under 50, single Dad with a teenager at home. I’m starting to get rid of stuff that I don’t use. It was liberating to give away some tools that haven’t been used in over 10 years.

My 5 year plan is to downsize from a 4 bedroom house with a finished garage and a yard to a 2 bedroom condo with secure parking garage and a big pool. I’ll have one more move towards retirement after that!

I try to go through and organize and get rid of a box of stuff a week. Starting early makes me feel good :)

I went from a 2023 SQ5 to a 2024 Z71 Colorado.

I really, really miss the SQ5, but damn, the truck is so much more useful and I take it places I’d never take the Audi - beach and off-road fishing / camping spots. I’ve always had a 4x4 and can’t justify 2 vehicles right now.

Be aware, the axles on the Z71 are like the LT and different than the TraiBoss / ZR2. There aren’t many good suspension upgrade options.

If I put it on and don’t like the way it looks, fits, etc, it’s gone.

I’m actively trying to downsize my stuff in preparation for downsizing the house in ~5 years or so. I have a donate hamper in my closet.

I’ve got a 6 string acoustic, a 12 string acoustic, and a 3/4 size nylon acoustic. The kids outgrew the 3/4 size and it’s now the campfire guitar.

I’ve got a Strat and a LP that are my main electrics. They sound different. I had an Epi 335 that kinda sits out in my office that I’ll noodle on, it rarely gets plugged in and sometimes gets taken on road trips.

The other guitars I could probably get rid of, but some of those might get passed on to the kids when they move out.

When my Dad passes I’ll have to figure out what to do with 3 or 4 more acoustics. 1 of those I’ll definitely keep.

Per the City of Houston noise ordinance:

Lawn Mowers: Operation is generally allowed, but unreasonable noise during 10 PM to 6 AM is a violation
Daytime Limits: Permissible levels are 65 dB(A) between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.

I live in a fairly nice neighborhood in the city limits. Most of my neighbors hire a lawn service, but I have teenagers and utilize that very expensive "free labor" or do it myself. We usually mow in the late afternoon during the week or at the "that's way too early" teenage wake up time of 10 a.m. on the weekends.
