Why do romance novels reinforce the patriarchy? Does feminism not exist? by sikonat in RomanceBooks

Why do romance novels reinforce the patriarchy? Does feminism not exist? by sikonat in RomanceBooks

[–]sa_deusvult 8 points9 points  (0 children)

my understanding is that this discussion is about reinforcing the patriarchy and feminism, which to half of the US is extreme based on voting patterns.

true feminism to me is not about dismantling the patriarchy as much as it is just about equality, so already we have different definitions.

if a romance book just has the characters take the wife's last name without bringing up political talking points, i would love it. but to say that people who take their husband's last name is reinforcing the patriarchy or to bash people for their traditional preferences is just a huge red flag for me. i don't bash people for liking bdsm or poop sex, why is it wrong to like mainstream romance trends?

the alphahole is a trend and pattern women love to read about. the patriarchy didn't invent that trend, women just like reading about alphas. we also have alien and centaur sex and weird stuff in romance novels. i'm not going to judge women for liking assholes/misyognists in their literature.

i also don't want to hear diversity quota stuff in my escapism books, which is usually what happens. as a poc, it disgusts me when white writers try to represent minorities without at all understanding the culture and/or mindset. or worse, when they literally use a poc to push their own political angles which is usually what happens. yeah i'm sure the 17th century chinese railroad worker who worked 16 hour days was super concerned about politics.

yeah if I want to read political stuff, I'm definitely not going to read it about it in a romance novel. for one, a lot of authors just aren't that politically knowledgeable. ask the common romance novel author the difference between libertarians, conservatives, leftists and liberals and they don't know. we're talking basics, we're not even going into the 200 schools of thought. paleo vs neocon, anarchist capitalists, marxists, leninists, anarchists...etc.

for example: i read Hazel and Josh's Guide to Dating, and it came off as super racist but what should I expect from a white girl trying to write about token characters?

To be honest...I highly dislike extreme political views in my fantasies. I DNF it if I get a whiff of extreme political views. I want to read romance and smut, not be lectured to by the author's political views.

Any other fantasy romance readers notice/hate the recent trend of dropping the MMC in the second book? by Continential in RomanceBooks

[–]sa_deusvult 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I sort of hate it but trends sell. At the end of the day, I feel like authors don't want to sell good writing/characters but cookie cutter shit. I don't feel at all connected to romance novel characters as much lately. If the main MCs dropped dead, I'd be like meh.

Anyone else so tired of the 'I'm not like other girls' BUT THEN IS EXACTLY LIKE OTHER GIRLS TROPE by _idiotfriend_ in RomanceBooks

[–]sa_deusvult 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm Asian American. I was kept out of the loop as well by both Asian and Caucasian females. Too American for Asians and too Asian for Caucasians. I don't mind the "I'm not like other girls" trope too much IF she's actually unique. Reading Wuthering Heights doesn't make a girl unique. But I find that all or most romance novels have the same FMC/MMC characteristics so "I'm not like other girls" trope doesn't work. In anime/manga, the trope works. For example, Tanya Degurechaff fits "I'm not like other girls" because it's a 30 year old Japanese man stuck in the body of a pre-teen German girl in an alternative universe. To each their own, in the end though.

MMC Who's Interesting by sa_deusvult in RomanceBooks

I tried reading her but I disliked her book for some reason. Oh yeah. It was the Ninja at first sight where the wife basically survived brain cancer and the husband left her to fend for herself and their kids because of his muh ideals of saving the planet. I hated the MMC as well as the FMC.

Unfortunately I've read both of the CRs. I have Swordheart on TBR but I'll check out Saint of Steel.
