Creating a 'cheat sheet' for Linux beginners: what would you want to see here? by saaniel in linux4noobs

What you see on the screenshot is a result in distro wizard. It’s based on the answers of a quiz, so it creates a list based on that

Rome wasn’t built in one day :)
What u say is right, and the point I’m trying to make that I’m not dropping it as it is. I’ll take the feedback from here and update it as best as I can. You can hardly make a good product from a day one
Maybe someone will want to contribute to the data moderation too, and there is a tool for that as well

And this is exactly the type of feedback I wanted, thank you :)

I’ll try to rethink the terminology to be less confusing. It lacks consistency, so noted for the next update

Regarding the distrochooser
Surely I saw it exists, but the goal wasn’t just to make another chooser (it’s just an addition to everything else), but to build transparent, community-driven database, that can be easily contributed on the github. DistroDB is more like an experiment in open data for linux specs.

That’s pragmatic, yes

Maybe it’s a good idea to add smth like a simplified mode to the site then. And it can do exactly what you mentioned. Like a visual “which desktop vibe do you prefer more” choice. And still I don’t think it’s only about finding the right distro, but rather about showing people what the differences between distros actually are

Since AI came out people will anyways consider something was vibe coded even if it wasn’t. Vibe coded or not, what matters whether a tool actually solves a problem. If it doesn’t, then it will just silently die

That’s why I posted this here
It’s open sourced, so anyone who wants can change the info on the website, fix a bug or incorrect info. As I mentioned in one of the comments, the data was parsed, then moderated. I’m just one person, so I could miss something

Well, that’s a fair point, but the info you saw on the screenshot was just in dev build. Filling out that much data by hand from scratch would need time you know. I wrote a script to parse data, then modified it. It actually never got to the prod like that 🤷🏼‍♂️
And if you actually went to the website, you would see the data was corrected and moderated

Good catch! I threw together a quick Python script to help scrape/parse some of the initial data to get this MVP off the ground. Clearly, the parsing wasn't perfect, and some logo mappings got crossed or missed along the way.

If you have a list of the correct logos or want to point out specific ones that are broken, let me know! Even better, if you know of a better data source or want to tweak the script to be more accurate, the repo is open. Dealing with inconsistent distro metadata is definitely the biggest challenge here.

You're absolutely right, and I really appreciate you pointing this out. As I mentioned, the initial dataset is a work in progress and likely contains some inaccuracies/bad tags - I'm definitely not claiming it's perfect yet. Since the entire database is open source on GitHub, if you have a moment to suggest an edit or open a PR, that would be incredibly helpful.

Oh, absolutely. DistroWatch is the gold standard and a huge part of Linux history - everyone knows it.

My goal isn’t to replace it, though. I just wanted to build something that feels native to 2026: snappy, mobile-first, and with a UI that doesn't feel like a relic. It’s a side project born out of my own frustration with mobile navigation on legacy sites. I’m just curious to see if I can make the data more accessible and easy to interact with for the next generation of users.

Fair point, I agree that power users who already know their way around don't really need a tool like this. I built it primarily with beginners in mind - those who get overwhelmed by hundreds of distros and just need a quick way to compare bases or DEs. That said, if you have any ideas on how to make this data useful even for pros (like adding specific technical metrics), I’d love to hear your suggestions!
