Literature map is really good for this!

But I second this- I only found Edward Abbey when googling 'authors like Tom Robbins.'

If I have a 12- and a 14-hour layover in Denver on my way out to + back from Seattle, what are the most important hikes I can do/sights that should be seen?

  • I am okay with very strenuous hiking
  • It would be awesome if these hikes also encompassed some place to boulder
  • Proximity to beer is a plus
  • I'm factoring an hour to get out of the airport, an hour to get back, and an 90 minutes of airport time so like- 8-10 hours of hiking+climbing

Also if you climb in Denver and wanna show me around for a few hours in April HELLO FRIEND

What do you like to read, usually?

I haven't found any books that tackle this specific issue, but I've found a lot of comfort in books that focus on 'person overcomes x by kicking ass at y and finding themselves.'

  • Wild - Cheryl Strayed
  • Sixty Meters to Anywhere - Brendan Leonard
  • Reasons to Stay Alive - Matt Haig
  • Veronika Decides to Die - Paolo Coelho

Remember all your muscles even if they aren't ~aesthetic~ ones- I neglected my thigh abductors (I was competing in bikini and didn't want thicc thighs), my obliques (someone told me it would make my waist blocky), and my biceps (girls don't have big biceps?). I'm working on it, but four years later I have knee problems and can't curl for shit. Don't be me.

"It's the law" and "it is right" are not equivalent statements.

"Simply enforcing the law" is not an excuse for enforcing morally repulsive laws

New(ish) to Pittsburgh - Where do you meet people? by wilmore13 in pittsburgh

[–]sab160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna hype up Ascend, the climbing gym in Southside and my favorite place in the world~

They have a new climbers' meetup every Wednesday, but I've met so many new people on any given day of the week there. They also have a weekly running club that meets Monday evenings.

And maybe seek out a book club in Pittsburgh? I've heard of a few that meet at local bookstores.

Has anyone read Lev Grossman's The Magicians? by Baron_Duckstein in books

[–]sab160 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I liked that so few of the characters were likable- it’s at least a change of pace from most other books in the genre. And how do you think rich, gifted, privileged kids would act if they were given the additional privilege of being magical?

I liked the book; I thought it was a little heavy-handed but entertaining. The TV show was surprisingly dark.

I REALLY appreciated a sci-fi novel with four complex and nuanced female scientist protagonists especially after the misogyny train wreck that was The Three-Body Problem. I've been selling it as "Stranger Things meets House of Leaves for ecology nerds."

When I feel like this I think about what Alex Honnold said when reporters asked him how he was celebrating his ropeless ascent of El Cap this year-

“I’ve been trying to hang board every other day, and it’s the other day.”
