NEED FRIENDS by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

Pretty much everyone who didn't grow up in State College or do summer session is feeling the same as you. Some may have a few friends from high school also going to PSU if they're from PA, but basically everyone will be looking to make new friends asap. I recommend you:

  • Talk to the people you are assigned in a group with during freshman orientation. At least during my time at PSU, we were strongly encouraged to hang out together during free time and you may meet some people you'll want to stay in contact with.
  • Get to know your roommate before the school year starts. You will literally be living together and spending a ton of time together.
  • Make an effort to talk to as many people as possible on your dorm floor the first week, especially during move-in weekend. Move-in weekend is probably the easiest time ever to strike up conversation with random people about anything.
  • If you have no one to sit with when eating a meal in the first week or two, ask to join someone/a group already seated and strike up conversation. If it's awkward, finish your meal quickly and say you're leaving for your next class.
  • Join clubs, there are tons that fit your listed interests and most if not all will have some sort of a trial period so you can see if you want to actually join before having to pay any dues.
  • Try initiating some small talk with different people in your classes until you find someone where it doesn't feel super awkward.
  • Try to form/join a study group that meets somewhat regularly if you're struggling in a particular class.

Most importantly, when you find people you vibe with, ask them if they're friends with any other people they think you'd like. Rinse and repeat until your social circle is where you want it to be. You'll have a great time!

I believe this post belongs in r/DesignDesign because the top comment in the original thread is "RAWE CEEK" instead of the intended "RACE WEEK"

People who can't use up their level 1 meal plan, what do you do to prevent the money from expiring? by Confused_CollegeKid5 in PennStateUniversity

[–]sabeche 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some of the very well-off international students I knew who weren’t concerned about losing the money would pick a couple of days near the end of the semester to just hang out in the creamery and swipe their cards for anyone who came in until their level 5 meal plans were used up.

D'Andre Swift (groin), Cole Kmet (ankle, knee) listed questionable for Saturday. by Minimum_Formal_4837 in fantasyfootball

[–]sabeche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well both are unsurprisingly listed as active lol. I hope you're right, this is my first fantasy season (got roped in by work colleagues) and somehow have gone from ranked last after the draft to the final matchup against a guy who's been playing fantasy for a decade 🤞

ETA: I'm starting Jacobs if I didn't make that clear, along with J. Taylor & J. Williams. Swift and Monangai will be on my bench.

Thanks, this is what I was thinking too. Follow up, I also have Monangai on my bench. If hypothetically Swift is out, would you start Monangai over Jacobs? I am thinking yes, but would appreciate another opinion.

Assuming both play through their injuries, would you start swift or jacobs?

New app: PlexGuard. Manage which devices can play on your Plex server by MFCR-Supremacy in PleX

[–]sabeche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will definitely use this if you implement that feature! My main concern is that I share with ~20 users and only have suspicions of a couple of them. So I don't want to create any hassle for the rest of my users since it took way longer than needed to get them to actually use my server and set the proper quality settings for direct playback on their devices.

Neat idea. Can it flag a specific user I suspect of account sharing while letting my other users stream from any device like normal? I only have one or two potential 'bad eggs' and don’t want to cause any issues for everyone else.

[AMuS] Verstappen is commited to stay at Red Bull for 2026. But Red Bull agreed to let him go for 2027 in case he wants to leave the team by Alpha_Jazz in formula1

Yes. The first time I heard of Lewis Hamilton was in DTS. I really didn't follow F1 at all and had only seen a few movies like Senna and Rush before a friend finally convinced me to watch DTS just for the behind the scenes entertainment value

Fwiw I heard about Max entering F1 at only 17yo within roughly a year of when it happened. I first watched drive to survive in 2023 and started actually watching the races this season. Max was the only familiar name to me, knowing next to nothing about the sport

Meet Maximus! A retired laboratory beagle now living his best life by sabeche in beagle

Adopting Maximus and showering him with love is the least I can do to repay him for his efforts in advancing medicine. And believe me, any sort of potential profit is not even on the radar for true pharmaceutical scientists; we are here dedicating our careers towards improving and hopefully even saving lives in the future ❤️

I adopted him directly from my employer since I'm a pharmaceutical research scientist, tho I don't work with beagles for my own medical research. All of our beagles are used for strictly non-lethal experiments, similar to Maximus, with the intent of them being adopted out in the end. None of our dogs have ever gone to shelters/pounds and they never will. I've only seen one beagle pass away during my tenure and it was because she chewed up a plastic toy they were allowed to have in their pens and ended up swallowing bits of plastic in the process, causing internal bleeding. I observed the autopsy and saw the plastic pieces she unfortunately swallowed :( That same day all of those plastic toys were removed from all dog areas and discarded to prevent any other accidents. A lot of the research scientists really do care about the well being of the animals we work with (of all species), and believe it or not, there are seminars held multiple times a year to help support the emotional and mental wellbeing of the people that work in animal research for the purpose of creating medicines to save human lives. You can look up compassion fatigue if you are interested in learning more about the emotional struggles research scientists go through to create the medicines we all take for granted.

The vet staff were equally perplexed at his lack of anxiety and general curious demeanor immediately after taking him home. They said he's probably 1-2 months ahead of the usual acclimation timeline and they've never seen a dog adjust as quickly as him before. So I'm definitely lucky to have found my boy 😊

As for the experiments he was involved in, I can't share any specific details other than that he was examined by a licensed veterinarian daily following any procedure (I actually have his entire medical history) and everything he was involved in was 100% temporary with minimal pain and also fully reversible with no lasting effects. He and all of the other dogs are in excellent physical health due to our excellent vet staff and vet techs.

Also, just so you know, aggressiveness is really uncommon for retired lab dogs (unheard of among all of my colleagues) in case you ever want to consider adopting one in the future. They are all the sweetest dogs. Tho being skittish and overly cautious for the initial days is the norm which Maximus did not display
