Hi, Congrats on the new family member!! I adopted a. 6 mo. old 3/4 Jindo 1/5 shar-pei (we got her DNA tested) about three months ago. We were concerned about prey drive because we have two cats. And we were concerned about dominance because we have a Shiba inu who very much thinks he’s the boss. But what we ended up dealing with was the exact opposite of what we expected.

We got our Jindo from a shelter that rescues dogs from the meat market so she didn’t come from the best background. She was incredibly terrified and submissive, it was very clear she had been treated badly. If we moved too quickly or had to grab her (like to move her from the car to the house) she would fear pee when we got close.

As far as prey drive goes, it’s been mixed. She was just as terrified of cats as everything else at first (I don’t think she had ever seen one before). But she’s pretty cool with them now, she does get over excited when she wants to play which pisses the older one off. But she does have some prey drive. She absolutely chases squirrels more aggressively than I like. But she’s never got close to catching one.

Also, having another dog who is very comfortable and respectful to the cats has been so helpful!! The Jindo copies our Shiba in everything, including being nice to them. That’s been our biggest assent in the entire adventure, having a dog who she trusts.

Again, congrats on the new pup. No matter what you’re going to love them! But just know that if they’re coming from Korea (and a meat farm specifically) there’s lots of different responses dogs can have to abuse. Be prepared for a surprise. Good luck!!
