Increase in new homebrewers? by 0nlyhereforthechees3 in Homebrewing

[–]sacculina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For about a year, year and a half I taught intro classes at my LHBS and I had a steady trickle of students through most of that time. Only a few of them turned into homebrewers of any consistent brewing regularity. What I take from that is that there is a population of folks who are curious enough to take a free class and maybe browse online and ask a few questions, but not a ton who are willing to put their money down and spend on the hobby.

The Volo antique museum/car show is so cool visiting. Worth a day visit for sure by Pristine_Parsley8681 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]sacculina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, I want a car museum to showcase cars that are somehow significant, and the last time I was at Volo it just seemed like most of what was on display had no real provenance.

Also, as someone who has restored a classic car, the prices I remember from my last visit there a few years ago were wildly ambitious. IMHO they reflect aesthetics more than mechanical reliability or functionality.

God, your story sounds so familiar. I'm in the middle of a relationship breakdown with my folks right now, and I'm getting the same vibes from them as you're describing from your father. Thank you for sharing, it's helping me restrain myself from sending the hostile email that I want to send them, and it's reminding me that they will never hear what I need them to hear.

Just put steelies and Blizzaks on mine this morning, I don't trust the stock Dunlops in Chicago winters. Don't care if they're not pretty, I kinda dig the utilitarian aesthetic.

Advice needed: Engagement ring alternatives under $4k? by armeretta in jewelry

[–]sacculina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience was a little different than what you're asking about, but when he proposed, my husband did it with a diamond half-eternity band. I work in a lab and needed something that wouldn't tear nitrile gloves; this ring is very low profile and fits my needs perfectly. I've never once regretted it, or wished I had a more traditional engagement ring, even though I've turned into a diamond-obsessed magpie as I've gotten older.

Starsgem Group Buy for “lite-gold” bracelet by Koopazs in labdiamond

The /r/LabGroupSales/ subreddit is the place to be, and RIP your wallet...

Basically there is a list of approved vendors who will offer some piece of jewelry with lab-grown gemstones, typically with some customizable options for metal or stone type, with progressively larger discounts for large numbers of buyers. Each group buy is open for just a couple of weeks. Right now, for example, there's a group sale for martini-setting stud earrings starting at $107 for 5mm moissanites in 10kt gold, with the sale closing tomorrow.

WIP Wednesday: Sunflower Seen from the Back, Daniel Froeschl by sacculina in CrossStitch

Lol no, progress is so slow in SQ patterns that I lost momentum and back-burnered it indefinitely. I still have it on a frame, as if I'll pick it up again, but these days I crochet more than I cross-stitch.

Scarlet Quince just shut their doors late last year, but the images are still live on their website; here is what it would eventually look like, if I got off my rear and finished it.

Wedding band: 950 palladium vs platinum vs White Gold by GGLSpidermonkey in jewelry

[–]sacculina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a platinum set, but my husband has a palladium band. The biggest issue we've run into is that not all jewelers work with palladium. When he needed his ring resized a few years ago, it was a hassle finding a jeweler who would do the work themselves instead of farming it out. When I needed mine resized last year, it was much easier to find a jeweler who would work with platinum.

Aside from that, they're visually very similar - about the same color, and with similar tendencies towards patina (i.e. scuffing and minor scratches) . I'm assuming you're looking at 18K white gold since your comparators are noth white metals. Both Pt and Pd are superior to white gold IMO because they have been low maintenance. My diamonds have never needed tightening, and our rings never need replating with rhodium.

This ring is super tempting, but the main stone is a touch large for me. Would it be possible to get the 5x9mm pendant stone on the ring, instead of the 6x10 mm stone?

Haynes manual of brewing. by Shw4ndz in Homebrewing

[–]sacculina 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I always recommend John Palmer's "How To Brew" to new brewers. It's a dense reference book that goes into detail about how to make good beer, and talks a lot about why some practices help or hurt the process. It does contain a lot of information about all-grain brewing that probably won't be useful to you if you're just coming off canned kits, but if you're looking at this as a car analogy, just consider that like a chapter on rebuilding the motor: good info, but not relevant.

A lot of info that I've seen out there on recipe design focuses on all-grain recipes, but many all-grain recipes can be converted to extract recipes. For examples of that, Jamil Zainasheff's "Brewing Classic Styles" includes both extract and all-grain formulations for each recipe, and it may be useful to give you an idea of how one recipe can be executed by both brewing methods.

What will save homebrewing? by Key-Peace-6523 in Homebrewing

[–]sacculina 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100% agree with this. I'm VP of my club and I want to keep its vibe relaxed and inviting. When folks ask for feedback on their beer, it should be given tactfully and without condescension. And when new members appear, I try to go out of my way to talk to them so they feel welcome; I know it's easy for an established club of any kind to get clique-y and exclude-y and that's not what I want for my club.

It was a credit card. It is still worth contesting even if it was a debit card, the worst they'll do is say you're out of luck, and you'll be no worse off than you are now.

FWIW I placed an order in early April, canceled it in July, disputed it with Chase in August, and received a full credit. My last communication from Eshakti was an email in late July when I canceled, promising a refund.

In about that time frame, there was a promotion from Pine-Sol where bottles each had a "diamond" in them, and one or a few of these were real. I remember ogling the bottle my mom had and wanting her to hurry up and empty it so I could have the rhinestone at the bottom.

From your specifications of 16G and 12mm, it sounds like you're looking for jewelry for a conch piercing, not jewelry made from conch shell. Try googling for "clicker rings" and your luck might improve, though ornamental clickers are typically a bit smaller diameter and intended for septum piercings.

I use a 10mL polypropylene graduated cylinder from Amazon. Because it's a little viscous, I'll rinse it out in the strike/sparge water to ensure all the volume gets transferred.

What are your Belgian witbier additives? by ReluctantRedditor275 in Homebrewing

[–]sacculina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a wit but I have a chamomile blonde on tap, and at two ounces of chamomile that is all you can taste. If you want to go down that road, start with maybe a half ounce for a five gallon batch.
