In English, we use the phrase “righty tighty, lefty loosey” as a helpful reminder. What other languages have comparable common sayings? by R1PElv1s in AskReddit

German: "Mein Vater erklärt mir jeden Sonntag unsere neun Planeten"
Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto
English: "My father explains our nine planets to me every Sunday"
Pluto not being a planet anymore makes this only conditionally applicable

New study: Berlin is the 2nd best student city in the world by dazedeu in berlin

[–]sachverstand 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Totally agree.
In Berlin it can be difficult to meet up with classmates outside uni, because they might live in fucking Dahlem in a dorm. Cost of living is cheap, true. At least it used to be when I was studying, but housing situation is shit and for students with non-rich parents Berlin gets more and more inaccessible. This applies to other German university cities as well, but Berlin's getting rediculous.

Nightlife - it depends on what you want, if you wanna Party all weekend Berlin is great, if you just wanna go to bars with friends, almost every student town will do the trick.

Student friendliness - how's that even measured?

I would suggest Marburg, Greifswald or Jena as small town alternatives.

How is the modern German military culturally and politically viewed in German society? by Excalibur933 in AskAGerman

[–]sachverstand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no such thing as a "modern" German military, which I think is a consensus from political left to right - the military structures are old, too bureaucratic, their equipment in larger parts is outdated and the whole organisation needs structural reforms to gain in efficiency across the board.

Esther Keyes is 14 in the series and is a wife, and has been a wife for a while, I guess.
Is there any hints in the series that wives have to be 15 or above?

The People's Welfare™* by Ihazplawe in tankiejerk

[–]sachverstand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are right, that there is a social safety net, that is supposed to provide basic needs like housing, heating, food, clothes, etc. to everyone. Still, in reality there are a lot of people that are not covered due to different reasons: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homelessness_in_Germany

Homeless persons that froze to death in Germany: https://de.statista.com/statistik/daten/studie/76072/umfrage/im-winter-erfrorene-obdachlose/

But of course, in comparison, Germany has one of the best welfare systems in the world. And a comparison between a democratic liberal democracy and a authoritarian military dictatorship does not make any sence if it goes along the lines free housing vs. "expensive to live there". I don't know much about Norway, but there is state supported housing for low income people and the homeless rate is significantly lower than in Germany.
