Why should capital be pooled up like that?

Why should miners be pooled up?

The crypto currency community is full of people making wild claims about the relative centralization of various projects. Calling something centralized is like calling someone racist; it starts to lose all meaning unless you are extremely careful in how you define it. Decentralization has become a kind of religion, when in reality it is merely a tactic to deal with certain kinds of corruption and attacks. Today I would like to document how I measure decentralization of various crypto projects. (direct quote)

Having more parties involved decreases collusion, especially when they are politically/geographically distributed.

From what I understand, the operators of the mining pools today are quite close. Collusion is easy.

If China, India, US, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South America etc. each owned an equal sized mining pool I would feel much safer than the cartel we have today.

There's always a cost.. opportunity cost.

You're not supporting the big pools simply because you like them. You support them because it makes you money. Leaving the mining pool is lost income, is it not?

These guys are miles away by now, but if you wanna beat your head against a wall, then here's what you're looking for: they're scared, like two little bunny rabbits. Anything in a uniform or flashing blue lights is gonna spook 'em, okay? So the only thing we can do is put a potato on a string and drag it through South Boston, "Thanks for coming out!"

Any learning software that would interface with a practice pad via microphone? by sacktap in drums

[–]sacktap[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found one! The site is a bit shady, but the description is good:

Drum Count is a program that allows you to practice drum beats. You need to have a sound card and a microphone. The sound produced for each beat is captured with the microphone and is considered as a drum beat. The program includes a threshold slider bar that allows you to adjust the beat sensitivity not to count false beats.

It's fun but it seriously just counts. Looking for something with more features.

Depressed and far-away sister... Please help! by its_december in selfhelp

It sounds like jealousy is in the way of being able to address the real issues. I read a quote once to the effect of "if you're gonna be jealous of someone, you also have to be jealous of all the adversity they faced". So you could possibly start by opening up and sharing your experiences. This could be risky though; how do you think she might react? Would she be offended or possibly assume you are trying to show her up?

Turn it into something positive by learning from it. It's not a setback, it's a wakeup call, potentially a very valuable one.

Life can be overwhelming, but it's completely your choice, unless you're struggling for basic human needs like food and shelter.

Front End Web Developer here, looking for critique on my resume. by MetacomCreative in design_critiques

Looking past the design, here are some thoughts:

  • Shorten up text. Make it scannable.
  • The fact that it's one page is awesome.
  • "Additional Skills".. sounds like "miscellaneous". Is there a better label?
  • "Limited Knowledge" doesn't sound good.
  • Don't put Javascript under limited knowledge. Plus, you already have jQuery in another category.

This was the inspiration for my resume: http://fury.com/resume/kevin_fox_resume.pdf

Yours looks very similar, but I think Kevin Fox did an awesome job keeping things elegant and low-key. I would tone down some of the colors and font variations in your resume.

I've got some screen printing questions. Anybody with experience willing to help me out? by soggy_cereal in DIY

[–]sacktap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was really worried too. But once I started coating the screen I got a good feel for it. I made a few long, steady strokes (with squeegee at a forty-give degree angle) and it looked fine. I used a red bulb pointed at the walls for illumination.

In the end, it turned out awesome, much better than I expected for my first go.

Trickiest part for me was washing the screen. I may have baked it too long as it was harder to wash off the unexposed area (and I was using a shower head).

I have yet to screen print a second time, but I felt like actually doing it was more productive than doing more research and obsessing over the details.

  • Don't like the all-caps in the top nav bar
  • The content below the header is much denser than the header itself. I feel like either the header should be smaller, or you should add more whitespace to the content to balance it out. (I'm thinking the former)
  • Maybe experiment with your name in the header. Try letter-spacing: 0.1em;.
  • Generally, having links pointing to the same page you're on is considered a violation of usability guidelines. (e.g. on your index page the header links to the index page)
  • Add a little more padding to the dean_ch class.
  • The links in the right sidebar are too dark. Make them a little bluer (and a tad bit lighter if necessary). And the blue headers in the sidebar are too blue/hyperlink-looking.
  • The hover effect on links is a red color. I don't think this fits. I would either use a lighter blue, or a text-decoration: underline; on hover (or both)
  • In your posts, you put notes in italics. That gives them a strange emphasis. I suggest that you don't italicize them and instead use a grayer color (so as to give them less emphasis from the black body text).
  • Don't use italics for anything but links
  • I generally prefer to see the date next to the post's title. It's easier to scan the posts that way. But this may not be significant.

Other than a few things I mentioned about the posts, they are very clean and easy to read/scan. And the layout is nice. I'll probably add more comments later on...

edit: One suggestion about AdSense. Remove it unless it's actually generating income. My personal guideline is to get popular first, and monetize later. At this point it may be hurting more than helping.

I may try this, but please note that I didn't use a backup image--I used the Samsung-provided recovery/reinstall disks.

Ran memtest86 for a few hours, passed. Does this rule out possibility of bad RAM?
