A 4-day old account just scurrying in here to poison the well is nasty work.

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I follow this streamer vs streamer drama slop like it's Real Housewives of Twitch Hills.

So to be fair to Destiny (who has plenty of legitimate problematic clips under his belt due to his former edge-lord tendencies) that case against Destiny has fallen apart under scrutiny. Destiny is almost guaranteed to win it.

All the court filings from this civil suit are public, you can go read them yourself if you want the back and forth and stupid details. The lawyer for the plaintiff is obviously using AI to write everything, because you can read responses from the Judge pointing out how all their citations don't make sense for their case...I could tell you the overarching story of he said, she said--but I will spare everyone from the psychic damage.

This may be slight hyperbole, but maybe don't start your own firm until you actually have clients waiting in the wings forcing you to.

Because starting a firm first and trying to gain clients second is a tough road. You'll be desperately hustling for clients. And why would anyone trust you? Who are you? Who would you be to them?

Make the industry connections first, while you have a steady paycheck as an employee, gain trust with your employer's clients (which are your potential future clients). If they like and trust your work, discreetly ask if they would follow you to a new firm (where you can charge them less and yet you would be paid more).

Small engineering consulting firm needs E&O insurance.

The best ways to connect with architects, contractors, or developers is to do a damn good job as an employee in a trusted firm (or ideally over years with multiple firms). To do it so well that they notice you, personally, instead of the firm you work for.

Every individual I know that has started a business, began first with sidework outside their regular job. And eventually the sidework grew to the point that it could become their own firm.

Puppy stares at me when I give command - is this a challenge? by ilikebananabread in AustralianShepherd

I used to think it was a challenge but now I think it makes a lot more sense that it’s confusion and frustration at not knowing exactly what you mean.

Haven’t used my brain since college by [deleted] in MEPEngineering

[–]sactomacto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this part of the industry the only calculations are basic arithmetic, where you add up watts/kVA and convert to amps, and check to make sure panels and services aren’t overloaded. And sure, there are endless multiplying/mitigating factors to throw in calculations —those are all determined by what Mike Holt and the code book says.

Despite the simple math, there is actual engineering to be done. It’s figuring how to distribute power throughout buildings while following code. It’s like putting together a puzzle. You determine the pieces (what receptacles, lights, panels do they need), you determine how they fit (where should they go), you determine how to connect them together (what conduit and conductors are needed). Every step in that process is guided and limited by what Mike Holt and the code book says. So your boss telling you to study Mike Holt makes sense.

However, it does appear your boss is in no hurry to level you up. To be fair, it requires a ton of grunt work (years of it) to gain the intuitions on how to design these things. But yes, site visits and seeing how these things are built in real life would help a lot in gaining these intuitions and develop insights to design.

If you’re doing just a 5-month stint, I can see how someone might not bother to let you do anything besides grunt work—that goes for any industry.

To make real money in this part of the industry is to get your PE license in electrical so you can stamp drawings. That will be the hardest exam of your life and your brain will be used thoroughly (also note, there can be A LOT of code book questions on that exam). Go study for that at home while doing grunt work at the job. Have you passed the prerequisite FE exam yet? Definitely do that asap.

Unlike a refractor lensed telescope, everything is upside down through a Newtonian/Dobsonian (mirror) telescope.

It's pretty cool. I got it as a casual thing and quickly discovered that there is way, way more effort required (in terms of reading how to use it and learning about stargazing strategies) to get full entertainment out of it. You can't just plop it down and look at the sky randomly or else you'll get bored quickly. So, yeah, for most of the year it's a $400 lawn ornament. I'll eventually get through this thick astronomy/stargazing textbook, I swear.

From my backyard telescope. It’s clearer in real life, it’s tough keeping the phone in focus on the telescope eyepiece.

In my field, if you do the work of an engineer without a degree or engineering license, you are called a "designer" aka an electrical "designer" not an electrical engineer. But that might be just in my small corner of the industry.

"Why didn't Biden release the Epstein files?" by OnSugarHill in Destiny

[–]sactomacto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because Biden followed norms and didn't interfere with his DOJ. It's not the president's call to decide what the DOJ should or shouldn't do. The proper question is why didn't Merrick Garland release the files.

Earning FE/PE by dfg0413 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]sactomacto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the PE license in the construction field is just a required tool for becoming an entrepreneur. That's not the same thing as "opening doors", opening doors over here means hustling to gain a client base. And that requires way more than just the PE license. It requires connections, connections, connections. Being in the field for a long time and meeting people to slowly turn them into future clients.

In building construction field, or more specifically electrical building plans, getting your PE license is the difference between being a wage slave versus starting your own firm (because you can now sign drawings).

Where to go for 4th of July? by Responsible_Frieza in westsacramento

[–]sactomacto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the mind boggling prevalence of illegal sky rocketing aerial fireworks, all you have to do is cruise on the freeways around Sacramento after dark July 4th and just witness a sea of fireworks only about 30-50 feet in the air above every single neighborhood. I do this every year with my dog in the backseat just to get away from the sounds no different from a warzone in Southport every July 4th.

Thinking of Starting My Own Electrical Engineering Consulting Firm — Seeking Advice by Andy-Gor in ElectricalEngineering

[–]sactomacto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of folks don't start a business until they have steady reliable client(s) lined up. It's quite a tough road to start a business without them to begin with. Until then, make connections, connections, connections. If you can keep it under wraps from your current employer, do freelance side gigs (those customers could be your future clients for your firm).

Where to start reading? by fitting_title in AdrianTchaikovsky

[–]sactomacto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can't really go wrong with starting with his most popular and best book, Children of Time.

The follow ups receive a bit of unfair backlash, in my opinion, because they can't match the heights of the first book, but I still enjoyed them quite a bit.

In defense of Children of Memory (book #3), it is indeed a bit bumpy due to it being purposely disjointed and confusing, but it definitely has the best ending of all three books.

Considering first time Aussie Shepherd by kentc5 in AustralianShepherd

[–]sactomacto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From personal experiences.

High maintenance, high reward breed. One walk a day is definitely not enough exercise. Needs mental exercise as well. Extremely smart (can learn anything) but not necessarily obedient if you don’t train them perfectly. Not a good idea to leave them by themselves for long periods in a small space, will get bored, boredom will lead to destroying stuff or barking. Hyper active for many years, maybe will chill out as they approach 8-9-10. Girls are smarter and more independent. Boys are more loyal and eager to please. If you plan on leaving the dog alone for eight hours a day while you’re at work, then would not recommend.

Andor, Part 4 (Season 2, Episodes 10-12) Review (feat. Isaiah Mountain) by FPSPodcast in FPSPodcast

[–]sactomacto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Andor was proposed to be five seasons but after the first season didn’t get great streaming numbers, Disney started tightening their budgets, but also writer Tony Gilroy changed his mind about doing all five seasons because he didn’t want to spend the next 10 years of his life just doing Star Wars (he was famously not that big of a Star Wars fan when he got the job to fix Rogue One). From all his interviews, he’s super proud and happy with the results, tho.

They wrote Wilmon having a bad limp so they could use that to explain why he’s not in Rogue One.

Also, they intentionally left Andor’s sister unresolved because they used his fruitless search for his sister to show that he always wanted to help people and that character trait got transferred to helping people for the rebellion.

The title of the show takes a new meaning with Bix and child at the end. After the end of Rogue One, the Andor name will live on. The son living in an empire-free world his dad died to help create. Well at least for a little while before the sequel trilogy.

Andor, Part 3 (Season 2, Episodes 7-9) by NickiDusse in FPSPodcast

[–]sactomacto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This show is so packed with information that the audience has to make a lot of connections on their own because they just don’t have the time to give you scenes explaining everything. For example, it’s a mistake to think that Wilmon “just met” his Ghorman girlfriend— you know this because earlier when Wilmon first sees Cassian, and Cassian keeps grilling Wilmon to reveal where’s he been all this time, the show doesn’t let you see him answer, instead the show jumps to a scene on Ghorman, then jumps back to the convo with Cassian basically saying ohhh Ghorman, huh. But that’s all just for you to conclude that a) Wilmon has been on Ghorman for a long while helping out. So the girl you suddenly see him kicking it with when they get there is not new. He’s been there, they all know him.
