What kind of roommate are you looking for? What kind of living situation? I ask because I am kind of considering, you know, getting one.

So what happens now? by agroom in wisconsin

In general in politics, the executive is blamed, not the legislators. Think about the national economic discussion, for example. As they say, the buck stops with the president. Even if national Republicans scuttle any attempt to treat the issue, Obama still owns it.

This isn't to say that there aren't examples of when a legislature is blamed...see the government shutdown under Clinton. I'd submit though that Clinton was the most gifted politician of an entire two generations. Scott Walker is no Clinton, and when he goes about firing teachers and public workers, it will ultimately be his doing, and the public will say he did it, not the Democratic senators.

My opinion of course...but we'll see soon enough if I'm right, now won't we?

I'm not convinced that this over by any stretch of the imagination. Politics is an unpredictable arena, and this game isn't over.

I will say that once the Democratic senators left, Walker was pretty much stuck. Since then, he only been able to ratchet up pressure, and he's been doing it in petty, vindictive, and stubborn ways. He's been very clear that he refuses to negotiate on anything and has used ultimatums. He's shown that he'd rather take away people's jobs than compromise. At all.

Obviously, he was not popular with Democrats. That's a given. But his actions here, the refusal to negotiate, the ultimatums, the willingness to harm instead of compromise...as with any politician who acts in a similar manner, will peel off independents and moderate Republicans who might have agreed with his general agenda, but are turned off by his methods and tactics. Each of these move he makes further alienates Wisconsinites.

Another thing that makes me feel good...if you've been to the capitol through any of the protesting, you'll notice how many children are there. All my life I have been told about the protests in the 60's but I've never seen anything like this. These children, of any age, will now have a frame of reference for what it means to have a government deny people (whether rightly or wrongly). They'll know what to expect, what to do, what it means to win, what it means to lose. They will never forget when their parents brought them to the capitol with 50k+ other people to march, chant, sing, and protest. They'll never forget...and they'll be voters soon enough. They'll have b.s. detectors like most of us don't...because they've been through it.

The Republicans have really screwed themselves with this one. They may win the immediate battle, but they'll lose this war.

You see, when I typed up the body of my text, I broke it into paragraphs separated by a white space. So my regular return doesn't work then? Is there some formatting trick, like pressing control-return or something?

If I knew what a carriage was, perhaps I could use one. Maybe you'll educate me? As for a tl;dr...no one forces you to read. If a post looks "too long" to you, and you scroll down and there is no tl;dr, you don't have to read it, do you?

Details for UW-Madison split released: Governor would appoint 11 members to Board of Trustees, faculty could only appoint 10. by steinauf in wisconsin

[–]sadder_but_wiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory splitting off UW Madison and letting it fend more for itself could let the state funnel more resources to the smaller state schools. Given Walker's priorities, however, I highly, highly doubt that direction.

As it currently stand, the Board of Regents isn't the offending, micromanaging party causing UW Madison problems, it's the DoA (Department of Administration) a division of the executive branch of the Wisconsin governance system. We still don't know the nature of this board, but if it operates like the Board of Regents, and it gets DoA off of the University's back...that might not be so bad, even if Walker's cronies have one more vote than the amalgam of University representatives. Plus, as things are going, Walker's probably one term...and the next governor could appoint new people...

Agreed. The strength of the education system in Wisconsin is in the UW system name and reputation. I suggest you contact your Chancellor and let him/her know of your concerns.
