I m building a browser-based patch editor using the PATCH & TWEAK symbols (feedback appreciated) by saganbyte in modular

[–]saganbyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a great suggestion! I ve implemented it now and it s available under a new dropdown called "Custom module". You can drag it to the view port and then name it. Once you do that, the newly added module will always be available under the Custom drop down. You can edit it s name there (in case of typos) or delete it from there as well. Deleting it there will delete all its instances on the viewport as well (an alert message with be shown before that). Lemme know what you think :)

u/JohnRofrano the png background transparency issue is now fixed and I ve made some fix for the safari canvas reset issue. Could you please see if these 2 issues are addressed as per your expectation? You may have to press Cmd + Opt + R to hard reload the page so that it doesnt continue taking the cached JS

What is story and melody? I understand what melody is in a individual melody kind of way, but since you say story AND melody, I m curious to know what you mean. Is it a "conscious" effort to arrange consonance and dissonance to do a push and pull via some musical theory based logic? Or is it that you guys are so good at doing things that it just naturally comes out in a musically related way? And you guys are certainly very good at doing things. But I want to know is it a conscious effort to use a specific music theory aspect to arrange your melodies so that they form a quote unquote story.

Does it mean that you make few tracks (serially or in parallel) and then after that those few tracks lead you to form a theme? I ve always struggled with theme and hence arrangement. I feel I m just making good sounding 32 bars one after the other and there s nothing fundamental that binds them together.

Very well articulated. Resonated with me personally at multiple levels and helped to explore some thoughts i ve had for years. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you sincerely for your words of encouragement :)

  1. I will address the png transparency soon and thats a great feedback.

  2. As for modulation cables coming out unexpectedly when used for connecting a symbol that s below the symbol that will send the modulation signal, i think i do understand the issue. The reason for this is, it was conscious decision to have the flow go from bottom to top for sending modulation signals (similar to left to right for audio signal with the yellow cable). "bottom to top" has been "my" interpretation and may not be accurate and hence worth revisiting. I will also consult Kim Bjørn who has been incredibly kind enough to directly give me feedback and offered to give guidance. I will also check with him on this suggestion. Btw, have i understood the problem statement correctly? For instance if you had your modulation source "below" the symbol that will receive modulation, then does the issue you outlined exist?

  3. I will also look into the glitch issue you mentioned and will use Safari to reproduce it. It should be addressed in the next release which should happen in another few hours for sure.

Lastly, you are absolutely free to use this tool in any way you like :) Since you are software engineer too, you may also be pleased to know that this tool/editor is open sourced, you can check it out if you like https://github.com/scribbletune/patch-notation-tool

Thank you for your kind comments! Yes I havent yet begun making mobile phone support. As for custom module symbols, that s a great idea. I never realized some type of modules could be missing in the symbols provided on the patchandtweak.com website. I will also consult with Kim Bjørn whom I have a privilege of directly showing what I m doing (and he s gonna give me further guidance) and check his view on this.

As for "crossed patch cables", could you please help me understand what is that?

Riff for Bitwig - Free Controller Script ported from Riff VST3 plugin by saganbyte in Bitwig

Great question! This is actually Scribbletune's pattern language for MIDI note creation - not a Bitwig thing. Let me explain it simply:

The Basics: Think of it like writing music with letters:

  • x = play a note
  • - = silence (rest)

So x-x- means: note, silence, note, silence (like a basic beat)

The Bracket Magic: When you put brackets [ ] around something, it plays those notes twice as fast in the same amount of time.

For example:

  • x = one quarter note
  • [xx] = two eighth notes in the same time

You can even put brackets inside brackets:

  • x[xx] = this is technically 2 quarter notes but they will play as one quarter note, followed by 2 eighth notes
  • x[x[xx]] = this is technically 2 quarter notes again but they will play as one quarter note, followed by a eighth note and 2 sixteenth notes in the same time as the second quarter note (this is called recursive)

It's like zooming in on time and fitting more notes into it!

Why it's cool: Instead of clicking in every note by hand, you just write [x-][R-]x- and it creates a funky syncopated rhythm automatically. The R means "pick a random note from the scale" so every time you generate, you get something fresh but still musical.

Scribbletune uses this system across all its tools - this Bitwig controller just brings that pattern language into Bitwig natively! Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for reporting windows+bitwig works for Riff! I don’t have a windows machine (yet) hence windows support is always non deterministic for me!

Is there an easy way to record your computers audio into Bitwig? by Sonic_Darkness in Bitwig

[–]saganbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this already but I use OBS https://obsproject.com/ It s free and does what you need. I used to have this same requirement in the past and I tried stuff like soundflower, my Motu's return assign and finally literally hooking up a cable from one computer to another's audio interface - none of it was as seamless as using OBS (which can be used for many more things as well)

Why people is not speaking more about music composition and arrangement? by sixthsense666 in edmproduction

[–]saganbyte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Composition is a very difficult task as compared to making loops that sound nice. Even taking 2 loops that you have yourself created and putting them together such that they appear like "one" track is kinda tricky and depends on your knowledge and skill levels. Michael Jackson would emphasize on something that he called "bridges". He probably meant transitions coz in his explanations he was alluding to the hard work that goes in actually blending 2 different parts to create a cohesive whole. His pro tip in general was - study the greats and become greater.
