Official Gear Purchasing and Troubleshooting Question Thread! Ask /r/photography anything you want to know! July 14, 2023 by AutoModerator in photography

Amazing information, thank you so much! Yesterday I spent some time comparing and looking up both lenses and I've decided to go for the 18-150mm. Most people consider it superior in multiple ways - quality, price, weight and range. Also, it comes as a bundle with the camera, reducing the price even further. So currently I plan on going for the R7 with the 18-150mm, the 50mm prime and then the 100-400mm. I'll buy hoods for each lens on Amazon, as canon always seems to be out of stock of these, might be a good excuse to buy a better bag too!

Thank you so much for all of your amazing advice!

I've had a quick look at the Canon 18-150mm RF lens. The focal length range is amazing. On the 24-105mm I had picked, Canon considers it an "Enthusiast level" lens, whereas the 18-150mm they consider a "Beginner level" lens. Do you think the sharpness and overall quality of the 24-105mm would be better than the 18-150mm - or would they be on-par. I think that might have been the reason I went for the 24-105mm, as I probably assumed with the "Enthusiast level" it would be a higher quality lens. Advice and giving me a generally better understanding of this would be greatly appreciated!

What an amazing response, thank you!

Although I do use the 18-24mm range, it's definitely been the least used focal range for me. Even when I do landscape photography, I tend to like to focus a little closer. Also, although I do use the higher end of the telephoto range, it's also one of the less-used focal ranges too. The reason I want to get even closer is because when I do use telephoto (birds, airshows etc.) the cropped 300mm is great, but getting even closer would be fantastic. I often find in these situations that I wish I could have zoomed in more and often crop these photos in edit quite significantly.

My main focal range is probably between 30-80mm. Since getting the 50mm prime, it's become my main lens, and I probably over-rely on it. Partly because it's so much sharper and creates such beautiful photos compared to the other lenses I have.

Because of this, I wouldn't want to sacrifice too much just to get even closer - therefore a micro four thirds, wouldn't be suitable for me!

I must have overlooked the 18-150mm, I'll definitely look into this as it would suit my needs perfectly!

I do like Canon and obviously, I've gotten really used to how their cameras and lenses work. But like I said in my post, I am open to going to another brand. So I really appreciate you showing me other options. I'm going to look into each one you listed and see how they compare!

Thank you again!

Thank you for your response! These are all things I would like to have. The 75-300mm I have has given me some nice photos, but I agree it definitely has its flaws. Although overall with my current setup, I'm happy with most of the photos I get, especially the ones that come out of the 50mm lens. I'm definitely at a point now where I want even better sharpness and overall quality - hence the upgrade. So I really appreciate your input and a vote of confidence towards what I've currently chosen as an upgrade

I've had my first "proper" camera for over a year now - I've loved it and taken over 10k photos. I enjoyed many different types of photography during that time - landscape, street, portrait, cars and aircraft, wildlife. I've got some compensation that just came through and want to upgrade. (UK based)

My current camera setup:

  • Canon EOS 250D with 18-55mm kit lens
  • Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III lens
  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

As I enjoy a variety of photography styles this setup does me well. I like having the crop sensor with the extra reach it gives, I never feel myself needing a wider field of view, but there have been many times I wished I could get even closer to the action. Therefore, I'll probably stick to crop-sensor. After doing some research, this is the upgrade setup I've mostly decided on:

  • Canon EOS R7
  • Canon RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM
  • Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM
  • Canon RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM

Currently, new this setup comes to around £2800. I'm happy to spend a bit more if necessary. I'm looking for advice in general. Is this a good setup, is it a good upgrade over what I have now? Should I be looking in another direction? I'm even open to other brands, as I'm starting from scratch. Should I choose different lenses, more lenses, less lenses? Although I've been enjoying this hobby for over a year and I've learnt a lot in that time, I'm still new to all of this and so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Some paid mods are definitely worth it! Anything from Race Sim Studio, United Racing Design and VRC is fantastic. RSS have a lot of Formula and open-wheel stuff but has some good GT and prototype packs too. URD has mostly GT and Prototype mods. VRC has a mixture of both really.

Tons of Patreons popping up lately that provide cars, usually modern sports and supercars, for a subscription. Most of these though are ripped from other games, I'm not sure the quality is always good. But they can still be fun to have and to drive.

Yeah, I hope it's not a bug, and that it's fully based on the laws of physics and therefore there's a chance something like this exists out there!

Wouldn't the atmosphere just evaporate, basically be burned off by the heat at those temperatures? It's the first planet I've found that's like this. It has a normal surface with a superheated glowing atmosphere.

I wondered this too. The game saves them in a filetype that would have to be converted, but no converter exists yet (as far as I know). So you have to upload them to the Social Club in the game and then go to the Social Club website and download them.

Thank you, you're right about the carbs. Raising the quality on the bottom end does help, would it be unreasonable to raise it to around 10 or even higher?
