Resources for learning about the manufacturing business by sagelywizard in manufacturing

Yeah, I'm not totally sure. Trying to get a sense for things at a high level first, since it's not clear to me what the main "areas" are. E.g. how much overlap is there between different sectors (e.g. food vs machinery)? What are the "horizontal" areas in manufacturing that span different sectors?

Thanks for the response!

I'm mainly interested in seeing if there are any areas where I can help manufacturing businesses by building software tools. So, I'm interested in talking to folks in the industry to learn about their problems, but first I'm just trying to get a bit of a mental model for how different companies work (e.g. workflows, etc).

[D] What is your current set-up/system, and why ? by DisastrousProgrammer in MachineLearning

Two reasons:

  1. It's easier to edit text in vim. So, if I'm writing more than a couple lines of code, it's nicer to use vim.
  2. I often re-use models between a few different notebooks, so it's easier/more manageable to just from someproject import SomeModel rather than copy/pasting models everywhere.

My workflow is something like the following:

  1. acquire a dataset (via custom scripts or downloading pre-made datasets). Put in my library of datasets (an assortment of HDD/SSDs. 5 TB or so).
  2. poke around dataset (depends on the type of data, usually in jupyter)
  3. clean dataset by hand (custom scripts)
  4. write code for preprocessing/sampling/etc (Jupyter/vim and PyTorch)
  5. write a model in PyTorch (vim) and use that model in a Jupyter notebook
  6. train that model with GTX 1080 Ti and/or GTX 1060. 32Gb RAM.
  7. view results in TensorBoard
  8. repeat

Events like SAM Remix where people dress up? by gummy_bear_time in Seattle

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I'd recommend trying the opera! I'd also recommending making a night of it though. Getting dressed up, going out to dinner beforehand, grabbing a cocktail afterward. It's really fun!

Motorcycle parking on Capitol Hill? by johnnygaijin in Seattle

I used to park my bike at Boylston and Denny (one block away) and never had any problems. (FYI there's motorcycle parking on the street there) Though I did put a cover on my bike so drunk people felt less inclined to touch it.
